It's being marketed to Kirk Cameron's Christian following mostly, but he also turned up on Dr. Phil, of all shows, promoting it this week. Pretty amazing it did so well considering it looks absolutely ridiculous.

Now, if Fireproof starred Kirk Lazarus and not the roving Christian douche from Growing Pains, THEN we'd be talking.

Eagle Eye took over its remaining IMAX showings, which accounts for a small spike in decline. That said, there were 5 new movies this weekend, so it dropping from #9 to #14 makes abundant sense.

It absolutely destroys me to see Miracle at St. Anna bomb while that disgusting, amateurish, POS Fireproof becomes a box office hit. Thanks a lot Americans. This is the most disgusted I've been with my country in well...at least a few days.
Yes its true Miracle at St. anna didnt get universally good reviews but I loved it and thought it was a masterpiece. It also got a 28% favorable reviews compared to 25% favorable reviews for Eagle Eye and NIR. Not much of a gap there but still. The eagle Eye trailers did nothing for me. Much like how the CLoverfield trailers never did anything for me. It looked like them trying to get people excited about something when the elements are not really there at all. I'll still rent EE cause of Dawson and Thornton though.

To be honest, if Spike Lee doesn't make another film again, I'm cool with that. He hasn't made a film like Do The Right Thing, well since, Do The Right Thing. The 25th Hour was what, his best film in nearly a decade?
He also owes me my time back for Bamboozled and She Hate Me (amongst others).
The man has been culturally insignificant for a while and his films are a symbol of that.
The reason Fireproof took off the way it did was due to the Christians. Don't fret, the second weekend drop will probably be huge.

I thought it opened pretty well. Around $30m in September is pretty damn good, and while the advertising was good, you couldn't really grab much from them, but definitely got some people's interest.
Shia continues to make smart choices (thanks to Spielberg). Whether or not he's the draw is the question. He might be. There's no real reason why Disturbia opened as well as it did. At least I didn't think the advertising was that great.

Lee also needs to keep his mouth shut. Most people don't like him because he always comes across like a monumental asshole. And, for what it's worth, I think "The 25th Hour" is not only his best film, but one of my all-time favorites.

I think its pretty safe to call it a bomb.
I didn't know films with $30 million openings were bombs, especially since there have been three films so far this year to make less money in it's opening weekend and still make over $100 million.
The film still has a solid shot of making $100 million and the only film I actually see making any decent amount of money next week is Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist.

I think Nick and Nora will take away a huge piece of the Shia market (10-17 year old girls). Express, Bevery Hills Chihoweveryouspellit, and How to Lose Friends and Alienate People should all open around 10-20 mil so that leaves Eagle Eye to rely on word of mouth. 25% on RT doesn't make me too hopeful.
The poor reviews might hurt it, but looking at the other movies there it could be around 70-80 mil. I can't imagine it will hit 100 though.

Express doesn't open for a few more weeks.
I think a lot of parents will stay away from Beverly Hills Chihuahua despite what their children may want.
I don't think anybody will be going to see How To Lose Friends as Simon Pegg is NOT a box office draw.
It also doesn't help that An American Carol, Blindness and and Flash of Genius are all opening wide too.
Nick and Norah will be #1 with Eagle Eye as #2. Everybody else will do mediocre.

Re: Your comments on "Chihuahua"....forget about "Alvin and the Chipmunks" did you? ;)
Re: Simon Pegg. Sadly this is true. "Run Fatboy Run" deserved it's box-office failure. It stunk. "Shaun" and "Fuzz" were both comedy gold. And turned into word of mouth smashes on video. But "Friends" looks pretty bad in spite of it being from the guy who worked on "Curb Your Enthusiam". I hope the trailer is just bad and the film is better. I like the cast.

Alvin and the Chipmunks was an already established franchise releasing right at Christmas. Beverly Hills Chihuahua is not and it's releasing in the first week of October, a timeframe which no film does outstanding numbers. ;)
And as much as I love Shaun and Hot Fuzz, the general public could (sadly) give two shits about Pegg. It also doesn't help that MGM is just throwing this thing out there.

1. Eagle Eye is definitely considered a success. Im sure it'll do around $150-200 million worldwide and quite a bit on DVD.
2. Bev. Hillls Chihuahua will be a success mainly because things that disgust me tend to do very well at the box office. It will succeed if for no other reason than to spite me.
3. How to lose Friends....will be a bomb as big as Run fatboy Run.

As a huge Spike Lee fan, i'm very upset that his latest film appears to be a bomb. After the success of Inside Man, it's clear the studios gave him a budget to do what he wanted, but i'm sure they expected results too.
To be fair, Flags of our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima didn't set the box office on fire neither. I wonder if Spike will blame White America anyway though ;)

He got most of the money from Europe. Italian production companies gave up most of the money I believe since this was a American/Italian co=production.

Indeed. The film was marketed to the niche and the niche ate it up. However, by looking at the daily box office, the film was front loaded. While other films had huge jumps on Saturday, Fireproof barely did.
The Christians are just like the First Weekend Club. They'll go balls out to get the film a good spot in the opening weekend for some recognition, but nobody gives a shit when week two rolls around.
