View Full Version : Underrated Comedies

Zen Peckinpah

I'll start.

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles - not overlooked by fans, but by critics it's frequently shut out in the dark (Ebert notwithstanding) as the best effort of Hughes, Martin, and Candy. My favorite comedy ever, one of the rare breed which is at once balls-out hilarious and moving without being manipulative. Similarly...

L.A. Story - "I said I never wanted to see your face again!" A perfect comedy, only saw it for the first time recently. An imaginative blend of wacky satire and love letter to L.A.'s cultural bliss, with a fantastic Steve Martin (once again) and a surprisingly attractive Sarah Jessica Parker.

Night Shift - am I the only one who'd consider Michael Keaton's performance in this something of a gift from God? The epitome of a scene-stealing character, and Henry Winkler is great as the straight guy.

The Girl Next Door - the movie that launched Emile Hirsch, and an unfortunate victim of bad advertising from Fox, as it's a teen sex comedy that actually has heart. LOVE James Remar and especially Timothy Olyphant's Sid Vicious-coiffed porn mogul. The part where he warns a classroom of students to stay in school is priceless. Also features one of the best get-rich-quick schemes of all time.

Something Wild - the manic stepbrother of Scorsese's After Hours, instead of the night from hell it's the road movie from hell. And Melanie Griffith is super  in this.

Any additional ones?

"Something Wild" was the first title that came to mind. Very good call. I'd like to add:

"Three O'Clock High"

"About a Boy" - Although highly rated by critics, only did 40m at the U.S. box-office. I thought it deserved such a bigger audience

"Married to the Mob" - Another Demme gem

"Clockwatchers"

"The Daytrippers"

"You Kill Me"

"Starter for 10"

"Drop Dead Gorgeous"

"In Good Company"

"Slither"

SERIAL - just released recently on DVD, this is a terrific comedy about flower power, California, cults, and sex. And you'll see a side of Christopher Lee that never showed up at Hammer.

I know the Maltin book gives it a bomb, but Scavenger Hunt is one of the funniest films I've ever seen. A great ensemble cast. My favorite bit is when Roddy McDowall, Cleavon Little and James Coco are stealing a toilet and are confronted, one of them replies "We have to check the timing in the turbo flush!" HA!

Used Cars - some of the biggest laughs I've ever had watching a movie (...and I knocked them motherfuckers right on their ass too)

Bowfinger - the ONLY multiple character Eddie Murphy film in the last fifteen years that's even remotely funny to me. And he's brilliant in it. Keep it together.

Bowfinger - the ONLY multiple character Eddie Murphy film in the last fifteen years that's even remotely funny to me. And he's brilliant in it. Keep it together.

Both of those are great.

The sabotage of the football game in Used Cars is priceless. And yes, Bowfinger is the last great effort for both Murphy AND Martin.

Also second Three O'Clock High (what if John Hughes made After Hours?), Bananas, Dirty Work ("You bet on the fight in Rocky III!?"), and Zero Effect, another recent Netflix choice. Stiller needs to do more seriocomic stuff like that.

A few I wanted to amend to my list:

I completely forgot two Bill Murray films last night that I can't believe has evaded mention as of yet. First, Quick Change. Easily my favorite comedic performance from Murray after Ghostbusters and Rushmore, and infinitely quotable ("You're becoming Ralph Kramden's evil twin!"), plus hilarious supporting turns from Randy Quaid, Geena Davis, and Jason Robards as the cop who can't get a break. Plus Clarence Boddicker is in it! Other Murray film: Scrooged, one of the most mercilessly underrated Christmas movies of all time, which my friends and I all consider a perennial holiday film.

Bulworth - didn't appreciate it when I was younger, but holy shit this movie is hilarious. The idea of Warren Beatty as a politician using rather wrong methods to reach out to voters, doing weed and coke, rapping about his proposals, and bringing buckets of KFC to functions alone is hilarious, but Beatty completely kills it here in the lead. Oliver Platt is hilarious too. Also had an AWESOME poster.

EDIT: Can't believe I missed Night on Earth being mentioned. The NYC segment with Giancarlo Esposito and Armin Mueller-Stahl is hilarious.

Porky's is underrated by the critics. Billy Madison is underrated by everyone besides hardcore Sandler fans. You might be right about Ruthless People. I guess, I named that because it hardly seems like it's ever talked about.

I won't rest until everyone has seen and appreciates these movies (as much as I do - lol). As you can tell, I love comedies from the late 70's and early 80's.

I was just reading some quotes from Murder by Death and was laughing by myself, hysterically. :)

Murder by Death (1976)

Milo Perrier: He's gone!
Jessica Marbles: Who's gone?
Milo Perrier: The butler. Here's the key.
Sidney Wang: If butler gone, where you find key?
Milo Perrier: In his pocket.
Jessica Marbles: What pocket?
Milo Perrier: The butler's pocket.
Sidney Wang: Butler gone but pocket still there?
OR
Sidney Wang: Very interesting theory, Mr. Charleston. However, leave out one important point.
Dick Charleston: What's that?
Sidney Wang: Is stupid. Is stupidest theory I ever heard.
OR
Sidney Wang: What meaning of this, Mr. Twain?
Lionel Twain: I will tell you, Mr. Wang, if YOU can tell ME why a man who possesses one of the most brilliant minds of this century can't say his *prepositions* or *articles!* "What IS THE," Mr. Wang! "What IS THE meaning of this?"
Sidney Wang: That what I said! "What meaning of this?"

Fun with Dick and Jane (1977)

Jane Harper: Interesting that the only two jobs you think I am qualified for are a secretary and a prostitute.
Dick Harper: You're not qualified to be a secretary.

9 to 5 (1980)

Violet: Oh, God. They know about the rat poison. I might as well just turn myself in.
Doralee: Violet, it was an accident.
Violet: I'm a murderer.
Judy: No, you're not.
Violet: I'm a murderess. I'm gonna go to the pen. My poor kids. I'm gonna lose my job.
Judy: Violet, stop this.
Violet: I'm no fool. I've killed the boss, you think they're not gonna fire me for a thing like that?

I Wanna Hold Your Hand (1978)

The In-Laws (1979)

Sheldon: Did we hit the little boy on Sixth Avenue?
Vince Ricardo: No, we missed him by a good foot and a half.
OR
Vince Ricardo: Serpentine, Shel! Serpentine!
OR
Sheldon: Please God, don't let me die on West 31st Street!
OR
General Garcia: [commenting on his choice for a new national flag, featuring a portrait of himself alongside a topless local prostitute] If it wasn't for the church, this flag would be flying at the U.N right now. But no . . . they stand in the way, THEY STAND IN THE WAY!

Ooh! And:
Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid (1982)

How about Big Trouble with Tim Allen? It's too bad that the story influenced it's release. And even though it probably contributed to the wave of "reference" Movies, National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon 1 was pretty good.

A "it's so bad it's funny" one would be Pure Luck with Martin Short and Danny Glover; he may have never said it, but Glover looked like he was thinking "I'm too old for [i]this[/] shit."

First movie I thought of when I saw this thread.

Grodin is just terrific: "I'm a white collar criminal." "...If I were your accountant." "As far as you knew...you lied to me first!" "Jesus Christ! You guys are the dumbest bounty hunters I've ever seen!"

Yeah, yeah, those don't sound like funny lines...but when The Duke delivers them, they are friggen' hilarious!

And it's by far DeNiro's best comedy.

Good choice, an unfairly maligned Altman film. The "wackiness" seems a bit forced at times, but still an original and unique film that deserves a DVD release.

Chuck & Buck

Goddamn is this an uncomfortable film! I actually had to fast forward briefly a couple of times, watching was just too painful at times.

Joey Pants delivered the goods, as well.

Dennis F. had some great quotables: "Have a cream soda or something ..."

To me one of the highlights of the movie is the great Yaphet Kotto as Agent Alonzo Mosely.

Completely forgot Where the Buffalo Roam, great movie with Bill Murray and Peter Boyle doing the HST/Dr. Gonzo shtick 18 years before Depp and Del Toro did.

Murray is a master at unconventional imitations, and though we do hear HIS voice and his head is mainly full of hair, it's dead-on HST and a good companion piece to Johnny Depp's truly essential performance (still his best IMO).

OT: any love for the old SNL where the Coneheads were on Family Feud and Murray plays Richard Dawson? His moustache and hair are dead giveaways he doesn't look like him, but at the same time it's another example of what he did with HST because his mannerisms and voice are pretty much-dead on (especially the former).

EDIT: Modern Romance has been on my radar for a while. Love Brooks' work I've seen (Mother and Lost in America), and I also heard Kubrick was a big fan.

Thank you Brack. I always seem to forget this film, even though I love it. Personally, I think it's Chevy Chase's smartest comedy. And it doesn't hurt that George Roy Hill directed it. A true underrated gem. I can't believe it only has a 5.5/10 rating on IMDB. Dumb asses.

Drowning Mona (if you haven't seen this and are a Will Ferrell fan - esp. his early days - then check this out) also, Casey Affleck is memorizing.

I found it excruciating too, but I also found it hilarious, and was really glad that it loosened up by the end and had a pretty upbeat ending.

I'd also like to add:

"The Big Bus"

Forgot about this one, I saw it in the theaters when I was a kid like 4 times. I have an uneasy feeling I wouldn't find it quite as hilarious today.

Some great choices, especially Midnight Run. Here are a couple of mine:

Real Genius (Val Kilmer College Genius flick)
Running Scared ( Billy Crystal/Gregory Hines Buddy Cop Movie)

Both had some quotable lines, one of my favorite scenes from Running Scared:

A car is speeding towards both Billy and Greory and they shoot at it and make it swerve.

Billy: I can't believe you missed every shot.
Gregory: Whatta ya mean? I hit the windshield six times!
Billy: No, I hit the windshield six times. I don't know where the hell you were shooting at.
Gregory: You aim low anyway!
Billy: Sure, make short jokes now.

Turns to Joey Pants, a criminal who they've arrested.

Billy: Snake, the trail of trajectory.. Look who I'm asking, MR. Sat's.

Man, I was laughing as I wrote that. If you haven't seen either movie, give em a rent. They're pretty good.

Wow. I just bought this and watched it for the first time in over 20 years, although uneven, I had forgotten how great Gene Wilder was in that role. I don't think he was ever better. He really deserved the Oscar for that performance.

1990's Quick Change with Bill Murray, Geena Davis, Jason Robards, and Randy Quaid.

One of the funniest comedies ever made, and completely unheralded by the masses at large.

don't know why no one ever mentions 'Novocaine' with Steve Martin and Helena Bonham Carter. Kind of a black comedy/thriller, but a great movie that's always overlooked.

No one mentions it because it's underrated.

And I agree...great movie. Good thing, or perhaps a sad thing, is you can often find it in five dollar bins these days because the movie didn't do so well, but the price is certainly not a reflection on the quality of the movie.

Whenever I read a thread like this, I end up grimacing at posts written by people whose definition of "underrated" differs so substantially from my own. It takes all the fun out of it.

I understand this issue is my own. I am dealing with it.

How about Airplane?
I feel this movie was grossly underrated as PG here n Australia when it should have been rated MA15+. What with the boobies, loads of sexual references shirley you can't let children watch a movie like that.

I've seen Kentucky Fried Movie mentioned, but for my dollar, I prefer:

The Groove Tube
Tunnel Vision

and since that made me think of Chevy Chase, I'd like to add:

Modern Problems
Foul Play
Seems Like Old Times (paraphrased, since it's been about 10 years since I've seen it):

Chevy (to bad guys, as a passenger in their getaway car): "Guys, I think I want out of the gang..."
Bad Guy #1: Ok, go ahead and get out anytime you want.
Chevy: Any chance of stopping the car, first?
Bad Guy #1 (laughs)
Chevy: Any chance of slowing down to 55?
Next shot is Chevy, being thrown out of the moving car.
