Stegall honoured for breaking pass receiving record
Bombers held special ceremony before game to honour Milt
By JIM BENDER, SUN MEDIA
Winnipeg Blue Bombers slotback Milt Stegall was honoured before tonight’s CFL game against the Edmonton Eskimos for setting the all-time pass receiving yardage record two games ago.
Stegall emerged from the tunnel with his son, Chase, in his arms to a standing ovation.
Premier Gary Doer presented Stegall with the record-breaking ball, caught in the Bomber victory over the Toronto Argonauts two weeks ago.
CFL commissioner Mark Cohon presented Stegall with a picture of the record-breaking catch.
Bomber president/CEO Lyle Bauer presented Stegall and his family a free trip to Disney World.
“These are memories I will have forever,” Stegall told the crowd. “It’s been a great experience. Winnipeg has the best fans in the world.”
Stegall then asked fans to remember Jovon Johnson’s family in their prayers. The Bomber defensive back had to return to his Erie, Pas., home after his 15-year-old half-brother was shot to death on Monday.
All-Time CFL Records
-Most TDs in a career - 147
-Most TD receptions in a career - 143
-Most TDs in one season - 23 (2002)
-Most TD receptions in one season - 23 (2002)
-Most yards per catch in a season - 26.5 (1997)
-Most yards receiving in a CFL career - 14,982
-Most yards in one season by a Bombers receiver - 1896 (2002)
-Most 1000+ yard receiving seasons by a Bombers receiver - 10
-CFL Most Outstanding Player - 2002
-Named as receiver in top passing tandem in CFL history together with Khari Jones
-Voted one of the CFL's Top 50 players (#15) of the league's modern era by Canadian sports network The Sports Network/TSN.
A great accomplishment and Stegall is really the role model CFL player. He doesn't drink and always treats the fans with respect. Last night the Bombers won 30-23 against the Edmonton Eskimos and Stegall scored his 147th yard touchdown. I'm hoping Winnipeg can pull off a Grey Cup victory and get Stegall the cup.
They are second in the East Division with a 5-8 record. They've won the last three games in a row.
Go Stegall!
