I have yet to get involved with BLU RAY and as I look at the releases only a few besides the new releases catch my attention. Do most of you only buy a few of the older releases while buying mostly new releases ?

Too freakin many. Actually the only ones I really mind were the "upgrades" that ended up being a disappointment like Total Recall. My SE Mars Tin looked better than the blu. The % is about 80.

Don't have an exact number, but I like my movies presented in the best possible quality. So I'd say many.
I'm more interested in seeing older films in HD. Great examples of why upgrading to BD is a no-brainer: Godfather Collection, Bonnie & Clyde, Blade Runner, 2001: A Space Odyssey...

Black Hawk Down, Wild Things (well not really, my DVD was defective) and The Fifth Element so around 10%.

No idea at this point. Maybe 20%. I stopped though recently - got tired of spending $20 a disc for something I'll watch once and thats it. Me, Myself and Irene on DVD is good enough for me.

How do they decide on what get's released ? Most of the titles have no appeal too me. I already have Planet of the Apes on laserdisc and dvd so did they decide those people who bought them before will buy them again .

47 for 77 have been upgrades. 5 of these were free with the mail-in rebate for buying a player and most of the others were part of a BOGO deal(Amazon/Columbia House). I was able to dump the SD versions at FYE for store credit.

Hmm, that's a good question. I have bought quite a few double-dips, but on the other hand, I have also purchased quite a number that I didn't previously own. I'll have to check, but it seems like it's probably close to 50-50.

Well the laserdiscs were remasters too begin with so I guess the dvds were remasters of the remasters and the BLU RAY discs will be the remasters of the remasters of the remasters.

Yes, titles that are proven sellers are more likely to be released. However, they have to stagger out the really big titles. It's a balancing act of releasing enough desirable titles to get people interested, while saving the big guns for when the market grows and they can sell more.

46 out of 170 or 27%. Classic films are really the only ones I like enough to consider them upgrade worthy. In most cases a film may not get watched often enough for me to bother rebuying it again unless I can get the HD version really cheap. That was the case with probably half of the ones I did upgrade.

I'd say over half of my blu-ray collection I previously owned on DVD, but I have quite a few I didn't have before, either because they weren't previously available or the dvds had non-anamorphic transfers, bad transfers, etc. Some of my blu-rays I didn't previously have on DVD:
A Clockwork Orange
Full Metal Jacket
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Risky Business
The Adventures of Robin Hood
The Searchers
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Happy Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

I have 152 Blu-Ray releases including about 10 tv show sets and a couple of movie collections (Godfather, Dirty Harry). I believe of those I have 52 movies/sets that I have double-dipped on. I have double-dipped on both the Godfather and Dirty Harry collections and they both have been well worth it. I also double-dipped on Heroes: Season 1 and Prison Break: Season 1. Now I try to stick strictly to Blu-Rays only but sometimes you don't really have a choice.

I'd say a third or less on BD. I'm not paying $20-$25 to double-dip. I will pay $10 or so. And it will be a long time before most BDs are $10. That's why I only buy one a month, if that.

Interesting exercise, though I was afraid to find out the results:
Out of 379 BD titles,
131 are double-dips (34.6%)
50 are triple-dips (13.2%)
27 are quadruple-dips (7.1%)
4 are quintuple-dips (1.1%)
1 is a sextuple-dip (0.3%) Robocop - 1 LD, 4 DVDs
1 is a 'seventuple' (?) dip (0.3%) Terminator 2 - 2 LDs, 3 DVDs, 1 HD DVD
It's only money lol.

On dvd I was much more inclined to grab blind buys at $15 or less new release pricing. I am much more hesitant with Blu when they release for $25 or more. That being said, it shows in my collection. I'd say half are double dips. It's easier to stick with what I know until prices come down.
However, this fall will be big with all the summer movies I'm looking to get (Indy, Wall-e, Caspian, TDK & Wanted).

I've been double-dipping a fair amount, and the sales on HD-DVDs were hard to resist and the recent Amazon and CH sales have bolstered my blu-ray double-dips.
What I have not done yet, and what I really want to avoid, is doing the hi-def double-dip ("HDDD"??), going from an HD-DVD release to a blu-ray release. All due respect to those who are doing it for an incremental improvement in audio (most reports I've seen so far have shown video to be equal or different, not necessarily better in blu-ray), I am really trying to draw the line at that.
But in general, once you start watching some of your favorite movies in HD-DVD or blu-ray, it's hard to go back to SD-DVD. But for movies that are not my favorites, SD-DVD is still ok for me.

Oh man, you are brave. I'm kind of afraid to do that kind of counting...knowing how much money I've spent on the same title.
The only one I think comes close to you is Dawn of the Dead (1978).
I own the Theatrical and Directors cuts on VHS, the Theatrical, Directors and Ultimate on DVD, Theatrical on UMD, and the Blu-ray. I think I also bought the Laserdisc one at some point in time as well...can't remember for sure.

What was the quintuple? None other than the venerable reference favorite - The Fifth Element! Original DVD, Superbit DVD, Deluxe 2-disc DVD, original Blu-Ray, Remastered Blu-Ray
I got the original BD free with my player, but it still counts I think.

Of my 40 hi-def titles, 13 are DVD double-dips, so that's about 33%. Most of those were super-cheap HD DVD grabs though, so it was easy for me to justify.
I'm really trying hard to be careful about double-dipping, but there is no hesitation on classic titles like Cool Hand Luke or the Godfather trilogy.

36 new
23 double dips
2 triple dips - Smokey and the Bandit and Caddyshack
Blu-Ray 62 discs
32 new
29 double dips
1 triple dip - The Rock
I did have a couple Blu's that were double dips that I ended up trading away for other discs because I felt the SD was superior. I had the 4 disc SE of Pearl Harbor with the R rated cut and all the extras and The SE of Black Hawk Down I chose to stay with the deluxe SD of that as well.
I only counted original DVD's or LD's in the double dips. Anything that was VHS or a DVD-r wasn't counted
