I recently bought the PS2 component cables off of monoprice.com and hooked up my PS2 to the TV. Since the 360 doesn't upconvert DVD well at all, I was going to try my hand with the PS2. I keep running into the same problem though, even films in 1.85:1 have bars on the screen. I have it set to 16 x 9 in the settings menu when you turn it on, yet if I hit select when I'm playing a DVD and go to the display options, it tells me progressive is off and the TV is 4 x 3 Letterbox and it won't let me change that.

Anyone have any solutions? The PS2 is model 75001 if that helps... thanks.

Yes, don't use the extremely primitive DVD player that is the PS2.

Yeah, yeah. I also heard Onkyo systems were much better than Sony ones, which wasn't true at all.

I'll be using the PS2 until I get a PS3, which does it well.

Um, Onkyos are not as bad as your experience. You seem to have gotten a lemon receiver, which you should exchange. That sucks, I don't know what else to say. You want to hear other sob stories from other forum members to feel better? I'm betting most of us have at least one.

And PS2s are just crap for DVD.

Your wilfull ignorance doesn't change these things.

Tried to tell him. And I own an Onkyo reciever, and I once owned a Sony reciever. The Sony wasn't bad by any means at all, but I think the Onkyo delivers sound that's more 'full' as well as natural sounding.

Anyways, your PS3 is a decent upconverter, but if you want the best (which you should for an HDTV), buy the Oppo 980 or that new Toshiba XDE player that's only $150 bucks.
