How bad are things going for the Cardinals? We couldn't even beat the Cubs "B"-squad today. -ohbfrank-
Which points out something that bothers me. And this is not to poke at the Cubs, because it seems like all teams do it. A team clinches a playoff spot/division, and the next day the manager gives almost all of the regulars the day off. If I'm a fan and pay money for a ticket to major league ball game and come to find Soriano, Lee, Ramirez, Soto and others riding the bench, I'd want a partial refund (the fair thing to do would be to adjust the ticket price to match the AAA team's prices since that's what you end up watching). I mean how hard is it for the manager to stagger the days off for these players over the next week? Pretty poor job of managing/running things if you ask me. And again, you see this from lots of teams, but I just noticed it today from Chicago's box score.

Check the scoreboard, if you dare.
If you're a Mets fan, rather than hoping nothing happened, you should just start assuming that something bad will happen. I can't say it makes results like today's easier, but at least you won't be surprised.

I usually tune Mets games out after the 6th or 7th - I figure it's just not going to get any better, and I find their late inning games very stressful - especially with the umpteen pitching changes.
The other night, I went to sleep after the Mets had a 8-2 lead on the Nats in the 6th. They won 9-7 (yikes!)
I feel that if the Mets make the postseason, it'll only be if the Brewers let them.
I really need to get into other sports!

Watching the final game at the old Yankee Stadium. The pre game festivities gave me a chill. So much history. It will be sad to see the old stadium go. My wallet will be sad when I go to my first game at the new building. Those prices are a travesty.

I'm no fan of the yankees by any stretch, but it's tough to see the last
game at this legendary stadium.
One thing that makes espnClassic such a failure is the lack of any real classic sports on there.
old games at yankee stadium would have been great to see this week.
there must be tapes of entire games out there.

what was on, i always forget to check because all i see mostly is wrestling,
american gladiators and sometimes a college football game from the 90's
i just checked and for the next day it's mostly what i mentioned and rodeo, awa wrestling, poker
and a few specials on basketball.

I've seen the demise of only one stadium and obviously it was no ynkee stadium but
the last game i saw at the vet was a sad day for me.
I stayed after the end of the game for a while and they had to ask us to leave.
the vet was the stadium i grew up with so it was hard to go, and i can imagine how tough it is for real yankee fans seeing the end of yankee stadium.
this is a sad day for any true baseball fan especially those who will never get a chance to go to the stadium anymore.

Living in California I don't get to Yankee Stadium much.. but was there last year.
I've been to dozens of other Stadiums but nothing struck me more than Yankee Stadium. The minute you walk in you realize you are in a place of deep history and the fans are of the most loyal.. it's like walking into someone's house. It was magic.

It doesn't matter that I'm a Met fan, but as a baseball fan and a New Yorker, it was easy to get choked up just hearing Yogi at the beginning of tonight's Yankee game.
I did take my son to one Yankee game this year, just so he'd have the chance to see it (we're going to Shea on Thursday, one last time).
But here's the deal-- Yankee Stadium was overhauled in the early 1970s. The fences were moved, seats were moved, even the playing field is different (I believe the field was lowered by something like six feet during the renovations, so you can't even walk out on the same ground where the greats once stood, literally). Bottom line is it's really not quite the same ballpark where DiMaggio, Mickey and The Babe once played. I guess you're on the same place on the map, but so much of that stadium was wiped out already more than 30 years ago.
Still, it's the end of an era for The Yankees, New Yorkers, and baseball fans everywhere.

I'm so glad I got to go to the Stadium (even the games they didn't win). I really didn't think it would bother me as much as it did today. When I got up this morning, I saw a bunch of channels doing their "retrospectives", but I purposely avoided them until YES' "Farewell To the Stadium" at 6. I really didn't want to spend the entire day depressed. Not even the wholesale slaughter of people on Grand Theft Auto fixed that. It was great to see Bernie again. The only thing was missing was Joe...but he's in the midst of bringing the Dodgers to the playoffs...

Watching the final game at the old Yankee Stadium. The pre game festivities gave me a chill. So much history. It will be sad to see the old stadium go. My wallet will be sad when I go to my first game at the new building. Those prices are a travesty. :eek:I know. I'm really hoping someone in a position of power stands up and says something. Between ticket prices and "brokers" like StubHub .
Maybe if we start getting some Tampa Bay/Marlin/Nationals attendance numbers...

I've always enjoyed going down to the stadium, living up near Albany I actually didn't get down there this season, I'm really hopefully I'll be able to get a ticket for the first game next season.
It was always a great experience going down there, most of the times I would just go on a whim with my buddy and pick him up on the way down and we'd sit in the bleachers and just have a blast just being there, soaking up the experience. I can still remember going down back in the 90's in a game against the California Angels and seeing Chili Davis kill us with 2 HR's. Things like that I'll always remember, just such a special place.

Funny story about my first time at Yankee Stadium....
I grew up a Mets fan, and had been to Shea a ton of times. What we'd usually do at Shea is buy cheaper seats, then in the second or third inning, we'd head down to the field level behind home plate, and hand the usher our ticket stubs (with a thirty or forty bucks under them), and he'd lead us down to our new seats-- wink, wink. With two or three people in the group, you're upgrading to great seats for about $15 each, and it worked every time. It was a win/win, as the usher pocketed some extra cash, and sat us in better seats that he knew wouldn't be used.
So about ten years ago or so, I brought my wife to Yankee Stadium (first time I'd ever been there, and she had a crush on Tino, so I took her). Yanks were getting blown out and fans started leaving, and in the ninth inning, we went down to the field level to get better seats for the final few outs. No shit, within one minute, two security guards came by to escort me out of the area, because I didn't have tickets to the (emptied) seats. The seats we tried to go to weren't even that good, but I thought the level of hardass they showed in that instance was pretty hilarious. Even when we didn't bribe the ushers at Shea, we could walk down after the 7th inning or so and sit almost wherever there was an empty seat.

With the way we are playing, I don't think we'd sweep them, and even if we did, at 1.5 back (assuming you only win 1 against the Twins) the Sox would have to drop 2 of three to Cle and a makeup game and then they'd still get the home playoff game. Basically, if you only win 1 against the Twins, you'd still have to drop 4 of 5 to miss out. (if my math is correct)

The White Sox hitters should be champing at the bit for Blackburn tomorrow. He's completely toast. After a few innings of batting practice, I'm sure Ozzie's boys will be feeling better. The Twins should've juggled the rotation to get Liriano, Baker, and Slowey pitching this series.
If by some miracle the Sox manage to lose to Blackburn tomorrow, then it might be time for Chicago fans to start getting worried.

Well it was nice to end the night with Griffey's homer, so we'll see if the bats come alive tonight.
I'm already worried though. We essentially have 3 starting pitchers worth a damn at this point, and we don't know how Floyd will react to the pressure either.
Tonight is must win as far as I'm concerned. If the Twins take at least 2 of 3 I don't see them letting up on KC at home, which puts the pressure squarely on the Sox.

I still think the Twins have to sweep, and look at tonight as a must win for them.
So, I know everyone wants Lincecum to be the lock for the Cy and he probably is, but after last night Johan is ahead of him in ERA and WHIP, Lincecum has the huge K advantage and 2 more wins, Johan has a better K/BB ratio, has pitched 25 more innings, and has 2 more QS (I thought I heard that he had way more blown leads as well.) (according to cnnsi "bullpen that has blown a mind-boggling 10 leads he has handed them")
Anway, I just think the voting might get a little interesting down to the wire.
cardsfan111
09-24-08, 09:09 AM
Lincecum really stumbled yesterday...and it would have been more forgiveable if it had been at Colorado as opposed to being at home against the Rockies. Combine that with Webb/Santana's strong starts, and things are much tighter. It'll be interesting to see who might have another start this coming weekend. If Santana goes on Sunday, it would be a great opportunity to make a final statement. Unfortunately for the Mets, if he goes on Sunday, I think New York will be toast in the 1st round with him being unavailable the first game (should they make the postseason).

Best case scenario for the Mets is that Santana doesn't pitch again for the regular season, which would mean they'd clinch by Saturday (and his season stats would stand). But whatever he does, I just don't think he has enough "W"s for the Cy, even though W-L is really the most useless of stats for a starting pitcher. He'd already be a 20 game winner if the bullpen held most of his leads.
He's been worth every penny for the Mets so far, and he hasn't had a loss (or even a bad start) since June. Mets aren't even in the race without him-- not even close.

For a team that's 70-87 compared to 87-70
Meaning?
I killed some time and came up with some data that doesn't help anyone, but here it is:
Opponents Win% Opponents W% in Team Win In Team Loss W L RS RS in Losses RS in Wins RS in ND
Johan 0.49 0.49 0.5 0.49 0.48 4.81 1.7 6.266 4.81
Tim 0.48 0.47 0.5 0.48 0.5 4.64 3.4 4.94 4.72
Looks like Johan faced slightly better competition and had slightly better run support (this is runs scored in the entire game). He beat better teams, but also lost to worst teams. Johan had worse run support in his losses, but also had greater run support in his wins. I guarantee none of these numbers.
Johan also had worse run support in no decision when his team lost (3.6-4.85) whereas Tim had worse run support in ND when his team won (4.5-5.83).
Both teams won 21 games when their ace pitched.
