I honestly don't know anything about good TVs, having always settled (I haven't even thought of going to Blu-Ray yet), but this one looks great and the price may be right. This Philips 42" 1080p LCD HDTV (http://www.target.com/Philips-42-1080p-LCD-42PFL3603D27/dp/B001E3XAI6/sr=1-1/qid=1221886304/ref=sr_1_1/602-7215456-0885458?ie=UTF8&index=target&rh=k%3Aphilips%2042%26%2334%3B%20lcd%20hdtv&page=1) is on sale at Target through Saturday for $949, and it would be the biggest TV we've ever owned, plus the first LCD and HDTV we've ever owned. Your thoughts?

Also, is purchasing a big TV like this at Target a good idea or not so much?

Thanks for your help! :)

Added these details (see post #6):

I should add these details...

We have $500 in Target gift cards from our wedding.

It's on our registry so we get an additional 10% off.

That means our purchase price is under $500.

Now is it worth buying a Philips from Target? Or are these failure rates / Target policies not worth it?

I would never buy a Philips TV from anywhere other than Costco. They seem to have a very high failure rate.

Go to Sam's Club. They have the same TV for about 850. I got mine there and it is a beauty.

I think the Visio line has had better quality reviews from owners. They appear to have one of those for $50 more.

if you are dead set on going to target, then i would go with this...

http://www.target.com/Sony-Bravia-1080p-LCD-KDL40S4100/dp/B0017Q2W6G/qid=1221944924/ref=br_1_4/601-5433262-0885763?ie=UTF8&node=146177011&frombrowse=1&rh=&page=1

or this...
http://www.target.com/Vizio-42-1080p-LCD-HD/dp/B00182DL14/qid=1221944924/ref=br_1_9/601-5433262-0885763?ie=UTF8&node=146177011&frombrowse=1&rh=&page=1

The Philips is a decent TV. I have a refurbed 42PFL7422D that I got on sale, last year. I paid $600 for it. For the price, it can't be beat. This picture is very good but by no means the best, you could do alot better but it will cost you. The TV you are looking at (like mine) is a 60hz panel which means you won't be able to "accurately" display 24 fps content but it will convert it just fine. Chances are you wouldn't be able to tell a difference, anyway. (Lately, the higher-end TVs include a 120hz panel vs 60hz. 24 fps can be displayed without any conversion on a 120hz panel. 120/24=5, 60/24=2.5)

I might go with the Sony if you don't mind paying a little more or having a slightly smaller screen. There is a noticeable difference between 40" and 42". However, I don't think you'll be disappointed with the Philips.

He can also get from Sam's Club the Vizio 42", 120Mhz for $1,079. I purchased it a month ago and it has been wonderful, specially with the PS3.
