A pretty good deal, indeed! -eek- I've never seen any of these particular films, but as a huge Agatha Christie fan, I couldn't resist picking up the set for that price. I also found a 10% coupon (http://www.couponcabin.com/s.jsp?f=121449g&h=so_5_121449_2008-09-19&afsrc=1), which brought the price down to $19.70, for a total of $24.28 with shipping & tax. Thanks starman for posting this deal. I wasn't sure if it was possible, but I gave it a try anyways...using the 10% code Rob posted as well as going through live.com for the 8% back. At the very least I got the 10% off. We'll see if the cashback goes through. In addition to snagging the Agatha Christie set, I also went in for a blind buy on Yankeeography. I'm not a huge Yankees fan, but I'm enough of a baseball fan to think I'll enjoy it. 12 DVDs/40+ hours of runtime for less than 20 bucks is a great deal...it's over 50 bucks anywhere else from what I can see.

I'm with you RobCA,but I did have a problem with them cancelling my order. I don't believe they were honest about it. I also ordered the Frank Sinatra collection which was also a steal with the two boxsets plus the Life Magazine book for around $24 as well as several other DVDs. I first got an e-mail telling me that part of my order had shipped. I then got an email telling me that Sinatra was delayed and then I got an email cancelling my Agatha Christie order.

I called them up and told them to cancel my entire order and when they asked for the reason, I told them I thought they were dishonest and I didn't trust them. I don't do business with companies that I do not trust, and will pay a little more to do business with those I trust.

I'm returning the items that have already shipped, and that's it for me with A&E.

It sucks that they are out of stock with the item now. I really don't think they are canceling orders because of the price mistake, my past experience with A&E's customer service has been top notch, so it would just surprise me. These big sets from A&E tend to only be available for so long, and then they re-release them in another form with a slight change.

When I started getting hemming and hawing and delays on most of my order, I just terminated all of it. Eliminated the suspense. I dealt with them a couple of years back getting the Homicide Complete collection and had probably the best customer service I've had from an online retailer. I'm not upset because I got ripped off, i'm upset that I placed a large order with them, and they come back a week later and toldl me that not one item in my order is available any longer.

Its not as if we sneakily added the items to the cart and circumvented their prices. The items were added at the prices on the website.

If it was just the Agatha Christie set being unavailable, I could understand; Demand for that was obviously high. But if your inventory management system is so poor as to show numerous items being in stock at time of checkout, then sending a generic email a week later saying all of the items you ordered are now unvailable - well, thats just crappy service.

That was a $200+ order they lost out on. In this economy, I don't know many companies who can turn away a lot of business.

I called A&E's customer service, and spoke to a rep. The rep I spoke to couldn't tell me anything more useful than 'oh, you got the email. yeah, a lot of people got that.'

So the point is, that it doesn't matter whether its A&E, or another company. If your first transaction with a company is unsatisfactory, then it would take something pretty special to make you consider shopping there in the future.

Yeah, you are right. I think most of us defending them, were just surprised because they used to be good. Like you said, if it's just the one item being canceled, that's probably no biggie, but if it's expanding out to other items I'd be annoyed too.

It makes total sense.

Companies have most things automated, and thousands of orders sometimes slip thru on glitches or price mistakes. When found, companies have every right to cancel the orders and not honor a mistake.

There are far too many ways to manipulate that policy. Basically, it's why the "bait and switch" is illegal in so many places.

Maybe I need clarification on what the "won't ship until..." date actually is. I thought that it was generally in instances of a pre-order. Which I thought was the case with this item. It's just a repackaging of various sets and they are currently offering an even larger set with similar titles so I don't see how they couldn't at least offer to make up for their mistake. Offering the individual Poirot/Marple sets that make up the box for the same price for example.

Their prices are generally so high that I have little cause to order from them. If I do choose to order something at a high price I at least expect the service to go along with it. This wasn't a case of a mis-print or entry error that is in essence manipulating or cheating the system. They offered the price and oversold for the stock that they apparently anticipate having. That should be an error they offer to correct. Not just "sorry, screw you. Better luck next time.".

Where are all those apologists? Quite a few of us were directed by Starman's post to check out A&E's Fall Sale, and we didn't just buy the Agatha Christie set, we also ordered a boatload of DVDs as well. My order totalled over a hundred bucks.

We all got the old "sorry" e-mail, informing us that it was due to a "rights issue or availability issue", and then most if not all of the other items we ordered were either cancelled as well or delayed as well.

In my case, the one item that they informed me had already shipped, when I cancelled the remainder of my order, has not arrived two weeks after they said it had shipped.

Since the A&E advocates feel this was not A&E's fault, they must be concluding that this is Starmans fault.

You don't have to defend them, simply because they did you right. People on this thread and at this site are Platinum level customers. We don't buy 3 or 4 DVDs a year. We buy that amount in a day! Any DVD store would love to have this group as customers, and you did them a favor by listing this great offer on this thread. The problem was, they blew it.

After taking our orders, they slowly began to let a lot of us know that they would not honor most if not all of our purchases. Their customer service was lousy, and they pissed off and lost a lot of DVDtalk customers. A lot of us google or run a check on an on-line company if we haven't done business with them before. Nine times out of ten, with DVD companies, your search engine will bring up a thread from DVDtalk. I've not done business with many a company because DVDtalk members have warned me that the company is dishonest, slow, a bunch of cheaters or has lousy customer service. The next time someone googles the folks at A&E.com, I hope this discussion will warn them off, so they do business elsewhere.

Mine got cancelled too. Am I disappointed? Sure! Upset/Mad? No... unless they get more stock of these within the time frame the original "delay" indicated... Then I'll probably get angry and contact them in an attempt to have them "make good" on the offer/order.

Will I order from them again? Probably not... depends on the offer and how this all finally plays out.

Frankly, if starman9000 ordered one and *did* get it I would be happy for him. On a deal like this I would place my order before I alerted the world. Why be upset with him? He only alerted the rest of us about what appeared at the time to be a really good deal.

Just like ebay or amazon feedback, if a bunch of buyers complain that the prices were good, but the shipping took a month, then i'm more likely to buy from someone else.

When excellent deals are posted on the forums, they attract a lot of interest and its usually just your luck if you can get your order in on time, and whether the company honors their mistakes.

I missed out on the Borders 80% off deal, but got to take advantage of the Blockbuster deal a hundred times over, and the amazon B1G1 free deal, that amazon honored.

I wouldn't shop at A&E, because it seems they have problems with legitimate orders - at least in my experience. Others may find the complete opposite.

Above all, I value all the comments posted - positive or negative - because it allows me to make informed choices as to what fantastic deal to take advantage of next.

Although, there have been so many good deals lately, I sometimes feel like its this forum thats keeping the economy afloat. What would happen without dvds?
