It will take nothing but a miracle to get the Yankees in the playoffs, which means that today begins the final series ever at Yankee Stadium. If all goes to plan, Andy Pettitte will be pitching the final game on Sunday.
FYI, I know this comes as a shock to most of you since they didn't talk about it at all during the All-Star game but this is indeed the final year of Yankee Stadium. Oh and Josh Hamilton cured AIDS, or something.

Hooray!!! Awesome comeback yesterday, gives them a good push heading towards October.
No clinch today as the Cards put a quick halt to the Cubs momentum by pounding the ball all over Wrigley. The Cards continue to be a mystery. They can get shutdown by the most mediocre pitcher, then kick Zambrano around all day. In his last 6 innings against St. Louis, Zambrano has given up 17 runs.

I don't know about that being a designed play (though the announcers talked like it was). The runner at first just took off too early and the A's botched the rundown. An aggressive play that worked out well for the Angels, but I think the run being scored was more Oakland's fault than anything.

It seems that just about every time someone gets credit for a steal of home nowadays, it's almost always a botched rundown, a double steal, the runner at third running with the pitch (and a resulting PB or WP, which equals a bullshit stolen base), etc. Hell, I'd even take a missed bunt on a suicide squeeze with the catcher missing the tag-- at least that still gives the fielder holding the ball a chance to make a play, instead of the runner crossing the plate while the first and second basemen are playing catch.
C'mon, show some balls. Doesn't anyone straight steal home anymore?

The runner stopping for no apparent reason indicates that it was planned. It's a fairly common play at lower levels of play, but in general you don't see it in MLB because if your players know the game situation it's easy to avoid.
Yes Dave, it's not an amazing steal home on the individual level, it's a team move, like the hit and run.

That's true.
It also sucks that nobody uses the bunt to knock a pitcher on his ass anymore. (at least I've been told that used to happen occasionally.) I suppose these days the other team would throw a hissy fit though.

Still don't know if I buy it being a designed play. The runner stopped because the pitcher hadn't even thrown the ball yet and had then stepped off. The rundown was horribly executed in several ways The pitcher should just run directly at the runner. Instead, if you watch, the guy goes toward second base. And then, you have no one covering first base at the end. Obviously it doesn't matter if it's intentional or not...I do think it's obvious that Oakland reacted poorly to it.

When I was a kid I used to play ABPA baseball with my dad on the computer and he'd get furious at me because I'd steal home so often. He thought it cheapened the game.

^ Great footage of a straight steal of home. Looks like that was against the Yankees with Pettitte on the mound. Funny to see the catcher (Posada?) jump up and out in front of the plate while the pitch is being delivered. I think the hitter would have every right to swing. If so, and he made contact with the catcher, I guess the call would be catcher's interference...

Too bad we didn't have Wainer all year long. :(
Nice to see that they still have Big Z's number, too bad they don't have anyone else's.

Didn't this happen just last year?
Yes... and? I could post videos of two triple plays turned in 2008 (including an unassisted triple play). It doesn't mean that they're common.
Here's (http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0FCI/is_9_63/ai_n6154585/pg_1?artBody;col1) an article on the "lost art" of stealing home.

Milwaukee continues to tank in a big way.
It's probably too little too late for the Marlins, but they're playing great ball. They would have been a dangerous postseason matchup with the arms that they have in their rotation.

Agreed. The Marlins would have to run the table like the Rockies did last year.
Not likely, but I sure would like to seem them in the playoffs.
Nice picture, for a second I thought they were celebrating a no-no or something. But it's Sheff getting a nuggy.

So does 3 grand slams in a season improve Alexei Ramirez's chances for Rookie of the Year? Personally I don't think he has enough press to get it but it would be nice.

He is definitely up there, but Longoria has lived up to the hype for a team without a clear MVP, so I think it's his.
