Annie Hall is 1000X the film Star Wars could ever hope to be. One of the most brilliantly scripted, acted, and directed comedies ever. And I love Star Wars.
Rocky never deserved it that year. Network or Taxi Driver did. Both are superior films. Rocky's a good movie though.

Annie Hall IS a good movie, but in terms of significance to American cinema, Star Wars deserves it for sure. That's my humble opinion, of course, and is subjective.
I can vouch for a close match-up between ROCKY and TAXI DRIVER. But there's no way, again, in my humble opinion, that NETWORK is a better movie than ROCKY.

For almost a year back in '77, there were no toys, no marketing hoopla. And Star Wars only opened on 32 screens.
Yet, even without any fanfare, it shook the world off its axis. Say that about Annie Hall.

I thought the same thing too when I saw SUTLM.
But after ROCKY a lot movies copied that theme in the 80's and those movies were hits. So a lot of people have enjoyed that formula and continued to see the copy cats and ROCKY sequels. So over rated not and the movie going public & critics at the time says so.

I'm sure if we had two Annie Hall sequels, twenty years later threw in some shitty prequels, pumped out a bunch of cartoons, etc., it might be a different story. As it is, there was one Annie Hall, and it was great, and that's what people remember.

Since when was the question "Is Annie Hall better than Star Wars"? I think a few of those best picture winners were not the best film that year; the poll is asking for the worst film of those ten winners.
For the record, Woody Allen considered it absurd to ask Academy members to decide if Star Wars or Annie Hall was the better film that year. He pointed out that the two films couldn't have been more different and showed his indifference by skipping the ceremony to play oboe in his jazz group instead.

Annie Hall has brilliant direction, sharp dialogue, searing insight into the human condition, fantastic cinematograpgy, and some of the most caustic comedic setups ever filmed.

Annie Hall
Sleeper
Bananas
A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy
Bullets Over Broadway
Manhattan
Mighty Aphrodite
Alice
Shadows and Fog
Crimes and Misdemeanors
There are a couple more (can't remember which ones) that I turned off after 20 or 30 minutes.
Bullets is the only one that I can say is a decent flick, I can never figure out what people see in Allen's movies. He is not funny nor do I think he is a good director or writer.

People irrationally claim Star Wars is the better movie because they saw it as kids. Star Wars' story may have the appeal of "the hero's quest," but Annie Hall is pretty much the only movie that deals with relationships on honest terms.
Don't get me wrong, I really like Star Wars too, but beyond the special effects there really isn't much to the film. I'm mostly just bitter because Star Wars effectively ended "New Hollywood" and pretty much ended the American film renaissance of 70s.
In the end, I guess it doesn't really matter because both Allen and Lucas have squandered their legacy. It just took Lucas A LOT less time.

I really don't see a squandering of legacy from either guy. Lucas just doesn't seem to have grown as a filmmaker and keeps going back and revising his crown jewel.
Allen, while he does have his particular obsessions and subject matter, has always pushed himself as a filmmaker with mixed results. While Curse of the Jade Scorpion was lame, if you've seen Match Point and Vicky Christina Barcelona, I really don't see where his "legacy" has been squandered.

Where to begin with this. Manhattan and Manhattan Murder Mystery were in no way sequels to Annie Hall. No more than Raging Bull was the sequel to Taxi Driver. Many directors cast actors several times to good effect.
Ants was a shitty cartoon that Allen played a voice on but did not write or direct.
He's directed over 40 films, more than a few of which are considered classics.

I also picked The Deer Hunter. Watching it again, I find that a lot of its impact came from the overwhelming rejection of the Vietnam War by the general public and less to do with its actual merits. I'd much rather watch something like Platoon for my Vietnam fix.
As far as Star Wars versus Annie Hall, Annie Hall may not have had as much mass influence as Star Wars, but it's certainly a better made film. Although, all things considered, I actually prefer Love and Death and Manhattan.
