Rango (Verbinski, 2011): Johnny Depp animated pic w/Industrial Light & Magic

From Variety:
Johnny Depp will reunite with "Pirates of the Caribbean" director Gore Verbinski on "Rango," an animated pic that Paramount will finance and distribute.

The studio has slotted the film for a March 2011 release.

Depp will voice the lead character, a household pet that goes on an adventure to discover its true self.

John Logan ("The Aviator") has penned the script from an idea hatched by Verbinski. Verbinski will work with Industrial Light & Magic on the animation.

"Rango" will be produced by Verbinski’s Blind Wink Prods., Graham King and John Carls. Par-based Nickelodeon Films is expected to be involved as well.

The CG "Rango" will be Par’s most ambitious star-driven entry into animation. Project was developed by King’s GK Films, which made the original deal with Verbinski (Daily Variety, Feb. 20).

Verbinski will direct "Rango" as he continues to develop an adaptation of the bestselling Take-Two vidgame "Bioshock" for Universal. That film is also being scripted by Logan.

"Rango" aims to use cutting-edge animation techniques that "will allow us to capture and translate every aspect of Johnny’s performance, using it to drive the computer-generated character in a way that has yet to be seen in an animated feature," Verbinski said.

ILM previously worked with Verbinski to create the octopus-faced Davy Jones character played by Bill Nighy in the "Pirates" pics.

Depp is set to begin work on "Rango" in January.

That setting looks perfect for reuse in a new Full Throttle game/movie.

I like the option to "Watch Again" at the end.
Um, no.

That reminds me of an early Depp movie, "Arizona Dream." That's not a good thing. I won't even shamelessly link to my review of that turd, because it's bad.

Arizona Dream has a 7.3 rating on IMDB, which is pretty positive. It certainly can't be worse than Private Resort.

And Sin City and Avatar have 8.3s, despite both being mediocre movies.

That was an awesome trailer; not really big on going to see kid flicks or Pixar films but this looks very unique.

That looks really strange and yet really cool. Really different for a CGI film. I'm liking it! Also, does it kinda sound like Johnny Depp is doing some kinda play off the Kermit the Frog voice?

I never realized how much Johnny Depp sounds like Kermit the Frog.

EDIT: Shilex beat me to it.

Cute movie I saw it. Kind of philosophical and dark at times but the animation is amazing. This will blow Mars Needs Moms shitty looking animation out of the water.

Re: Rango (Verbinski, 2011): Johnny Depp animated pic w/Industrial Light & Magic

I caught an advanced screening last night. Storywise, Rango isn't quite on par with the Pixar releases or even DreamWorks' latest How To Train Your Dragon but WOW, the level of detail in the animation blew me away! The last animated visuals to floor me like this was the movie 9. The bar has been raised. It will be interesting to see if the other studios are willing and/or capable of meeting or exceding the new standard set by Rango. There's also a "cameo" appearance that adults will find humorous. Parents with very young children be cautioned, Rango has it's share of dark, violent moments and several PG rated curse words. I thought the content teetered on a PG-13 rating. My score: B

Glad they didn't try to do a crappy 3D conversion on this one.

It's funny you say that because at my screening the theater handed out 3D glasses because their computer info told them it was 3D. Most of the audience left them on for the entire movie too.

Re: Rango (Verbinski, 2011): Johnny Depp animated pic w/Industrial Light & Magic

I like Johnny Depp's movies. Well, except The Tourist, which blew hard. But this looks far worse. It's just a dumb idea. Yeah, I want to see a movie about a gecko that wants to be a cowboy. But I would rather see this than that ridiculous Paul movie about the alien. I mean, it's got Seth Rogan as the alien, for goodness sakes. That should tell you how bad Rango is, if I'd rather see a Seth Rogan movie.
