Matt Damon to play Eliot Ness in graphic novel adaptation "Torso"

Mentioned this in Fincher/Heavy Metal thread, but I figured it deserved it's own thread, especially if Fincher is no longer attached to the project.

Apparently producer Bill Mechanic would like the film to shoot in Ohio, where the famed “Torso Murderer” dismembered 12 people in the mid-to-late ’30s, but there’s a problem with tax incentives.

On top of the casting announcement, this news is surprising for three reasons: 1) Until now, Torso seemed to be in a state of flux. 2) Peter ended the silence about David Fincher’s testy ongoing relationship with Paramount per Benjamin Button, and until now, Fincher was attached to direct for the studio. Fincher is tellingly not mentioned in the piece. 3) Filming is said to start early next year in Ohio or possibly in ever-Hollywood-friendly Michigan, with a budget reportedly set at $100 million, which mirrors Zodiac’s, a box office disappointment.

That rumor has been around for years and my hunch is the reporter simply repeated it as fact. But we'll see.

I was thinking Damon was too young, but I looked it up and Ness accomplished a lot in his 30s.

From Entertainment Weekly:
Ness sounds like the kind of film most studios dream of: a glossy David Fincher-directed crime thriller about famed Al Capone adversary Eliot Ness, headlined by Matt Damon, Casey Affleck, and Rachel McAdams. So why hasn't Paramount gotten around to making the darned thing? That's the question around town as the clock ticks on the studio's rights to the project, which are due to expire on Dec. 15. A source inside the negotiations says Damon and Affleck are ready to go, and that McAdams has expressed interest, but Paramount has yet to pull the proverbial trigger. At press time, the studio insisted it only recently received a finalized script from Ehren Kruger (The Ring) and would make a decision before the rights ran out.
