I ordered some CDs and DVDs from amazon.uk on the 18th and they were sent out on the 19th. I just picked them up at the post office today. That's UK------->California in 3 days!!! That's very impressive if you ask me:)

there were a few things that I wanted there. I also ordered from amazon france and amazon china. amazon france was pretty quick. I have done plenty of ordering from amazon's US site though also. all their sites seem to be very reliable:)

Unique stuff? The shipping has to be pretty expensive if they ship from those countries.

08-22-08, 02:22 AM
hmm...the shipping isn't too bad. the package that I received today contained 4 dvds and 2 cds I think. I just kind of got into collecting and now I'm looking for imported versions of US cds. Just something a little different...sometimes a European version might have different packaging or some extra songs perhaps. The shipping for this latest order was 8.03 pounds so I would guess that's about $16. I think the pound is a little more than a Euro.
I wouldn't use amazon.uk to buy American products.

There are 3 reasons to shop internationally: better release than what we have in R1, not available in R1, or cheaper than R1.
I placed an order with Amazon UK earlier this week for 7 movies: 4 not available here, 1 is a better (not pan-and-scan) version, and 2 are cheaper.
The total <i>including shipping</i> was GBP34.16 which showed up on my CC as USD63.34 - and average of $9.05 per DVD.

Isn't that freakish, Mike?! When I first started ordering online (and was living in MI), I used skivhugget.se to order some Swedish CDs. From Sweden to MI in less than a week just blew my mind. I remember doing mail order way back when and it took forever and could be fairly expensive!

hey what's up Sue? I'm trying to slow down my ordering but there are so many things I still want. I should have 3 cds (2 Coldplay singles and 1 Ana Nalick cd Japan version) coming from importcds. Just received an order from cdjapan the other day as well...same day as the amazon.uk I think. Still waiting on amazon.cn, maybe another week or so.
I'm going to have to check that skivhugget.se out. Do you know if they're still up and running?

I'm doing okay. You? I did slow down my ordering also. I just bought two DVD recorders. I tested one on a car race (2 hour setting) and I'm not impressed. The other I'm going to use to archive some tapes. If I don't like how it archives then I'll shove that one over to the TV and see how it does.
The only CD that I've purchased was My Girl: The Very Best of the Temptations. I ordered it from Newbury Comics. A very cool CD/stuff store to visit if you're ever around the Boston area and an ace vendor on Amazon.
The international sales portion of skivhugget got sold (or is now handled by) megastore.se. They cost more for product, way more for shipping and have far less choice. Bah!
Have you found a DVD player for foreign movies yet?

hey I am doing well. glad to hear you are too.
well i did order one cd from newbury comics...have heard people mention them and I like how they're also a B&M shop. I have been to Boston back in 99. Loved it there!! stayed two nights in Cambridge and checked out Harvard...very intimidating walking around there and that is when I was in the Marines lol...wasn't into cd "collecting" then like I am now. anyway, i ordered an Australian 2 cd version of Dido's No Angel (sad I'm not even a huge fan of hers yet i've bought like 6 different versions of the same cd...don't judge me!!!:)
anyway, they sent the American version and I contacted them letting them know about the goof. They sent me the right one and I'm sending the other one back.
I haven't bought a region free dvd player yet but I briefly checked some out on amazon. I don't know much about electronics so I'll just go for a mid-range one I guess.
That's too bad about the skivhugget shop. What are some other shops you suggest? I have recently gotten into imported DVDs...ohhhh my poor wallet!!
for music, i have used amazon, amazon.fr, amazon.uk, amazon.ca, cdjapan, eil.com and that's about it. oh yeah cduniverse as well...all have been just fine. I have also used amazon.cn but the orders haven't been completed. I am thinking about trying amazon.jp and amazon.de as well. I would love to know some other shops in Europe so if you can suggest any, that would be great!!

Amazon UK has the best customer service. I use them for books, music and dvds I can't find in the states. The shipping is usually really fast for me. Though the air mail shipping and the weak dollar makes it expensive to do very often.

I literally just placed another order with them 110 seconds ago! I also placed an order with amazon.com and used the free super saver shipping and I can almost guarantee that the amazon.uk package will get here first. Their customer service is very good. I actually received two cds that came unwrapped and had small cracks in them. I contacted them about doing a replacement and they said they would ship out two new cds and because the return shipping would be kind of expensive, they said I could just keep the original cds I got. That's great customer service!
I also placed my first order with this Mexican site called mixup.com.mx last night. I got a Dido cd and a Coldplay 2CD version of A Rush of Blood to the Head.

I want the R2 version of Threads (1984 BBC nuke drama). I live in Dallas, but I have a friend who travels to Geneva for work every other month. It will only cost $12 USD from Play.com out of the UK, and they will even ship it to my friend's Geneva office for free. He puts it in his luggage and gives to me in person. I'll probably order a few more to make it worth the trouble. The next cheapest price for Threads is $20 USD or so.

Patience! Also, I find that Amazon will often ship before they say they are going to do so. I've ordered with the free shipping and they've turned around and sent it out the very next day. I don't know why that happens, I wonder if it depends on which warehouse they are sending from or something like that.
Threads is an incredibly disturbing nuclear war catastrophe film. There was a spate of those kinds of films in the early 80s, of which, Threads was probably the most realistic and devastating.
In other news, I ordered from two Amazon merchants late Tuesday night (the 26th) and received the packages this morning (the 29th) Whee! I placed an order last night with CD Universe for a CD and DVD. It was a crap DVD (just filling out my Jodhi May collection) but the CD is Nicole Willis and the Soul Investigators. They got some retro soul goin' on!

Amazon UK is consistently my favorite retailer, the prices flucuate very frequently, so I'm checking the site usually weekly, they ship fast, their customer service is great (the one or two times I had packages go missing, they corrected it right away), it's much better than the US site.

hmm...i might have to check that Threads out. Have to see what IMDB says about it too.
I don't think I've ever had something scheduled to take so long from amazon before. I did order a few different things so it would make sense if they had to get them from a few different warehouses. I should have just used the standard shipping or gotten some of the cds from importcds. I wanted to go with the absolute cheapest and while importcds might have been 7.99 for a cd plus 2.98 shipping, amazon would have been 9.99 but offers free shipping.
anyway, i thought you were quitting sue. you just can't bring yourself to do it huh:) me neither hehe where were the amazon sellers located? I usually look for ones here in California...like IMPORTCDS!!!!!!!! lol i haven't heard of any of the people you go though sue. *looks for emoticon scratching head*
lastdaysofrain-yeah amazon.uk has been awesome except for my very first order. I saw the "Buy New" tag and just assumed the cd was in stock. Well I ordered 2 cds and had them ship together and the one cd was actually a "dispatches in 7-10 days" item. well the dispatch date kept on getting pushed back further and further and eventually i had to cancel it but that wasn't a big deal. I'm still very happy with all of the amazon sites so far. I think my first amazon.cn order should be here tomorrow but I'm hoping it might come today. Vandelay_Inds
08-31-08, 04:43 PM
The delivery address is in the East Coast and the estimated delivery date was three weeks ago. :( The first shipment arrived in a week, and had Amazon sent everything together as I selected I wouldn't have this problem, but they love to split the damn orders to increase the chances of something wrong happening as well as my overall level of stress. They succeeded.
civiclx
08-31-08, 04:53 PM
did you have it set for receiving everything together or having things arrive in separate shipments? maybe the book you're waiting for was a "dispatches in 5-7 days" or was it in stock when you ordered it? I only ask because I had that happen to me when I placed my first order with amazon.uk
have you contacted amazon.de to find out about it?
I'm still waiting for my first package to arrive from amazon.cn it is becoming very confusing. I'm starting to think I may not get my orders from amazon.cn
In good news, I received two packages from amazon.uk on Thursday I think. I ordered a 2-disc edition of braveheart and found that the case was cracked and dented. I emailed them about sending it back for a replacement and they said they would isuse a new order for the DVD and that I could just keep the original one since it would cost so much to ship back. this is the second time they've done that for me which is really cool. I tend to be very picky about the condition in which my items arrive. I do work for the postal service though so i can see how accidents would happen
well, we'll see what happens with amazon.cn this week. keeping my fingers crossed:)
Vandelay_Inds
08-31-08, 05:00 PM
I selected the option to ship everything together, which they then proceeded to disregard, splitting the order up and sending out the two shipments on the very same day. Grrrr! How I despise split shipments. :grumble: Now I get to plead for a replacement and hope they don't close my account and ban me from Amazon altogether because of it.

08-31-08, 05:03 PM

Vandelay_Inds
08-31-08, 05:08 PM
They'll probably offer to send a replacement, but after the outbreak of account cancellations and bannings that we've seen in the last couple of days, I no longer have much confidence in their good-will.
Strange thing is, they claim they sent it through DHL, probably because it was a large order of some 7 books, but the first large shipment which arrived in a week had a tracking number, whereas the second doesn't.
civiclx
08-31-08, 05:25 PM
hmm that's weird. so of course now you can't contact DHL since you don't have a tracking number...actually maybe you can. I've had to contact them about this amazon.cn order. I called 800 225 5345 said "track a package" and "i don't have one" when prompted for a tracking number. They can look up orders from the orig city to the destination city. I'm not sure where amazon.de's fulfillment center is but i think that would be the city you would pick and then the city that you have the books going to. it's worth a try.
i haven't read or heard anything about account cancellations. so if they cancel your amazon.de account, your amazon.com and amazon.uk accounts are still good aren't they?

I don't know. There is a link to the discussion about the account cancellations in the thread in this same forum about Amazon discontinuing their price guarantee.
i didn't read every post in that thread but I read the first one and I could see that happening. Like just an example would be if a customer was always saying that he never received a pacakge and requested a refund or a new one. something like that. that's why I don't want to complain too much about receiving things. I know it seems anal, but I've requested replacements because cd cases had tiny cracks in them. I bought new/perfect and new/perfect is what I want. I also don't want to get my account closed though :)
Well amazon.cn emailed me back, in English, (yeaaaah) and they said they sent the particular order out on the 10th so I guess DHL has had it all this time. I'll see what happens by the end of the week.

 One thing that bothers me about Amazon is that they don't take sufficient care to ensure items arrive undamaged. They pack things practically with no protection at all.

It is very difficult to know what's going on with shipments. The one I'm waiting for is stated to have been sent both via Deutsche Post and DHL. I wrote them requesting a tracking number, but got a generic, non-specific reply reiterating general delivery estimates. That's another thing I don't like about Amazon. Their customer service representatives are like robots replying from a script.

09-02-08, 05:15 PM
that's exactly what i thought about their customer service. it seems like it's a copy and paste type answer. I think it's like that though so they give the same level of professional service or maybe so they don't make mistakes. I don't know. If I had to bet on an order being delivered though, I would take yours over mine because I think I'm screwed. amazon.cn said they couldn't "afford" me a tracking number because it was standard overseas. they want me to wait now. DHL can't help much...the postal service can't do much.
atleast with amazon.de it has the same layout as the other amazons. amazon.cn is a little different

09-04-08, 04:11 PM
hey what's up? i think the first order with amazon.cn took the longest. It actually just arrived today, a day after all of the other packages. I placed that order on the 9th I believe and it went out the 10th. I think it went through the Hong Kong postal service. That is what I had originally planned on but then I got the message in Chinese with DHL being the only thing I could understand and that's what made me thing they were arriving via DHL. The UPS one actually came a day early since I was expecting it to arrive today.
In case you're curious, I'll give you a break down of the rates from amazon.cn. was first order was for 1 dido cd which cost. the cost of shipping was 20 yuan. the 37.40 total was equal to about $5.45 when I looked at my online statement with BofA. The package that I had shipped overseas express, UPS, was for the same dido cd and a norah jones cd. the cost of the 2 cds was 47.2 Yuan and the shipping was 190 Yuan so the total was 237.2. I didn't check my account for this order so i'm not quite sure how much it actually cost. i'm expecing two more orders from them which should arrive about the middle of the month.
The amazon.de package probably took a little bit over a week...about the same as amzon.fr.
you said that most of the things you ordered from amazon.de came? you're just waiting on the one book? that's good if that's the case. i mean atleast you're not waiting on all of the items

I bought a book way back in April from Amazon UK and just got around to starting to read it. The glue binding the pages must not be so hot because several pages started falling out. Hey, civiclx. Well, I finally received my book from Amazon.de! It is a miracle. I had given up on it ever showing up. It took 35 days to arrive. But thankfully it wasn't lost.
I think from now on though I'll wait and make a couple big orders per year, and send them via express shipping, which costs the same regardless of the number of items ordered. Problem is, apparently there is a limit of $200 on the goods you may receive in a single day duty-free. If you receive an order worth more than that, they might charge you duties. Anyone know what the current tariff for books and DVDs is? Has anyone received from abroad big orders worth more than $200?

that's awesome that your book finally showed up! any idea why it took so long?
well since i talked to you last, I placed another order with amazon.cn and used express overseas shipping expecting to get it by now. It actually hasn't been sent out yet so I guess it goes out the 16th and I should receive it the 19th. That's really quick, 3 days, but I was hoping that it would have gone out the day or day after I placed the order. I actually haven't been able to check my mail in about a week but I believe I received another amazon.cn order that was scheduled to arrive on the 17th.
I've also placed an order a chinese site called dangdang.com It's all in Chinese and I'm kind of having doubts. I have no idea if they've shipped it out yet. The money was taken from my account within minutes of placing the order but when I emailed them asking about the order, they replied, in Chinese, that they needed verification of the name and credit card number. I don't know how it works exactly when using a credit card for international orders. I'm kind of feeling like you were with your amazon.de order.
I also placed an order with a site called buyoyo.com. It's another chinese site but they have an option for english which is nice. I placed an order with them but not everything was in stock. Most of the items were "7 to 11" for their stock status. I feel pretty confident with them though. I'm definitely feeling confident with amazon.cn too so that's a good thing.
I should have a couple dvds coming from dvdfromkorea.com. Still waiting actually so we'll see what happens with that.
Anyway, I'm glad you were able to get your book. Did it arrive via USPS? Have you thought about trying to find contacts in other countries?

Like I said, I've contacted them about slightly damaged cases and they were really nice and sent out new ones. I saw a thread on another board about amazon closing accounts but I didn't read it. Yes, I ordered and it was shipped on 8/25, estimated date was 9/3. I had two orders ship after then (and a ton of other packages in general) that all arrived without a problem, so it was legit lost by the USPS. I place a lot of orders with Amazon UK (at least one a month I would say)

No idea at all. The package didn't look like it had been misdelivered or otherwise seem like having been handled around much.

If I were you I'd wait for them to process the order in their usual manner. Also, some stores authorize but do not actually charge the funds previous to processing the order, so that they do not incur costs in case they can't process payment at the moment of shipping. Actual transfer of money takes place later on when it is in fact sent out.
Anyway, I'm glad you were able to get your book. Did it arrive via USPS? Have you thought about trying to find contacts in other countries?
Actually, I don't know since it was delivered in my absence. As for contacts, I don't really like to bother anyone.

lol i certainly hope that's not the case. I've heard that management or someone will actually plant money around the work area (we're in a big warehouse) just to see if they can catch people stealing. I really don't know what the trip of a parcel is like but we have this operation called 050 where we get a whole bunch of parcels/packages and we sort them by zip code. they will be yellow sacks like santa would use if he worked for the post office. well, I see the package for philadelphia for example so I throw it...I mean gently place... =) it in the philly bag, but instead i accidentally put it in the wilmington, delaware bag and I don't notice.
anyway, that's the only thing I could think of. I just say have faith in your USPS. we won't let you down!!

vand-i actually got an email response from them today, in Chinese :( hehe and I guess they just need me to email them the first 4, last 4 and my name again so I'll humor them and hope that that gets the ball rolling
Please keep us posted on how it goes. There are many here who value foreign-ordering experiences.
i haven't ordered anything from russia, but there is a site called the importforums that has a great list of etailers from around the world. they had a couple russian ones listed.
Link please. :)
I'll take a look at that boleru site and unless it just scares the crap out of me, I could try and place an order to be the guinea pig :)
That would be cool, though I'd feel guilty if something goes wrong.
I've since found a couple of Russian online bookstores, but who knows if shipping is affordable, whether they're reputable and reliable, or if they even serve foreign customers.
I guess I'll have to wait for my Russian to improve a whole lot before venturing into ordering from them.

hey Vand, well I received another package from amazon.cn. It arrived about a week early. I did place another order with amazon.cn but it was supposed to have gone out by now. i contacted them and in somewhat choppy english, they informed me that their system was doing a 14-17 date update or something like that. anyway, i placed the order on the 10th and I actually expected to get it around the 14th because I used UPS express overseas shipping. I'm going to wait another day and then if I don't get an email saying it's been shipped, I'll contact them again. They're pretty good with responding to emails and I appreciate them replying in English because I don't think they usually would.
I received 2 dvds from dvdfromkorea.com. That order went pretty well except I had to wait awhile for them to ship it out because I think they didn't have one of the dvds that I ordered. I'm pretty sure it was listed as in stock when I ordered it. I'll probably contact them tomorrow to see about a refund.
My order with buyoyo.com has been shipped out. I ordered 8 things, 7 of which were listed as "7 to 11" day items. I contacted them a couple times about the status and they told me they were waiting for some of the items. All of the items have come in except one which they cancelled. I didn't ask them to but it's not a big deal. They are issuing a refund. I'm pretty sure I would order from them again.
I would post a link for that site but you have to be a member to access part of the forum. the site is called theimportforums.com and the registration is just like the one for dvd.com. I checked the sites they have listed for Russia and there are only two of them. All of the etailers they list will be DVD or cd retailers. I don't know if any of them would carry books.
I haven't looked at your list but I will. I don't have a computer so I normally use the internet at a cafe. Sometimes I have only a limited time but I'll check them out and get back to you. If you have any other questions about the sites, I have used, feel free to ask.
