Kung Fu Panda BLU-RAY 11/11/08

DreamWorks has revealed that they will bring their CGI animated film 'Kung Fu Panda' starring Jack Black, to Blu-ray on November 11, day-and-date with the DVD release. Technical specs have yet to be announced at this time, but a top-quality video and audio presentation is pretty much expected

Distributed by Paramount, the Blu-ray Disc carries a MSRP of $39.99.

We'll have more about this title as it becomes available.

****UPDATE****

Release date is now 11/8.

In other news, this is exactly 1 year from the day Paramount and Dreamworks went HD DVD exclusive. Interesting this press release came out the same day (Looks like they had to wait for a 1 year contract to expire before announcing this?)

^Huh? Paramount/Dreamworks movies have been hitting blu-ray for months now - and Kung Fu Panda is a new release, so I don't think they had to wait a year, this announcement wouldn't have come any earlier IMO.... Actually, I just have no idea what your post is saying...

There was a press release sent out my Dreamworks that they couldn't officially "announce" Kung Fu Panda due to the incentives Toshiba gave them to go exclusive. Something like some of the money financed the film. So they had to wait till either the contract was us, or share some of the revenue with Toshiba.

DreamWorks Animation SKG will begin releasing its titles on Blu-ray Disc during the fourth quarter, starting with its summer theatrical hit Kung Fu Panda, CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg said July 29 while reporting the company’s second quarter 2008 earnings.

However, few other Blu-ray details were divulged by the company, due to the HD DVD agreement DreamWorks Animation struck with Toshiba before the end of the format war.

“We’re trying to walk a reasonable line of giving you the information, sort of broadly speaking in our releases … and trying to honor the confidentiality agreement we have with Toshiba,” said company CFO Lew Coleman. “There’s not much else to say.”

Katzenberg added, “We will be releasing Kung Fu Panda on Blu-ray in the fourth quarter. We are making our product available and will aggressively promote and market our product on the Blu-ray format.”

For the second quarter 2008, DreamWorks Animation didn’t have a “Shrek” movie to boost its profits, with the company reporting net income of $27.5 million, down sharply from $61.8 million during the same period last year. Revenue during the same period was down to $140.8 million from $222.5 million.

Accounting for high marketing costs for Kung Fu Panda, the company isn’t expecting a huge boost in profits for the third quarter either. However after grossing $500 million worldwide, Katzenberg said DreamWorks Animation expects Kung Fu Panda to be a bestseller for home video in the fourth quarter.

In general, Katzenberg offered a positive outlook for DVD in general, despite total releases being sharply down this year,

“The flood of product that really clogged the retail channel started to sort itself out last year,” he said. “The movie marketplace as a whole, both theatrical and home entertainment, will be a strong performer in a difficult [economy]. … I believe it’s going to match or beat 2007.”
The movie "Kung Fu Panda" contributed $46.4 million in revenue to the quarter, but about $20 million of that was from completion of the company's strategic relationship with Toshiba, reported Analyst Michael Pachter of Wedbush Morgan.
So they had to wait it out. No biggie, the title was always on track for that date, they just couldn't release details about it until a certain point, which would be the day the contract expired I guess.

Regardless, I'm still excited for this film. Looks good - I just don't know if it will top Bee Movie as that movie was one of the best kid films Ive watched in years.

Ok Gizmo - thought it was weird considering Bee Movie was already released by Dreamworks Animation but if Toshiba had a hand directly in KFP, it makes sense. Great movie that will look awesome on BD.

Release date pushed up to November 9

"Dreamworks in conjunction with Paramount Home Entertainment have revealed that they have pushed the release date for the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Kung Fu Panda' to November 9th. Originally scheduled to come out on November 11th, Paramount is hoping that a rare Sunday release will help them compete in a congested fourth quarter."

Saturday? Friday makes a bit more sense but we'll see. Most stores will break this early anyway.

I wonder if the Best Buy price will be set immediately or if it won't take effect until Sunday (when the ad is "live")
