POLTERGEIST Remake - Why?
via aintitcool: http://www.aintitcool.com/node/37998
worst. idea. ever.
Does the "Poltergeist curse" extend to the very franchise itself?
“Boogeyman” writers Stiles White and Juliet Snowden are ramping up a needless remake of the Steven Spielberg/Tobe Hooper thriller “Poltergeist,” maybe the coolest ghost movie ever forged.
The duo also has a remake of Hitchcock’s “The Birds” in the works at Universal.
Find all of Variety’s dispiriting Wednesday-morning story, which does not disclose who will inherit the Zelda Rubinstein role (and admirably avoids the phrase "They're baaaaak"), here.

It would be one thing if these remakes meant that we would get nice, souped-up editions of the originals. But more often than not, we just get crappy repackaging of the old lackluster discs.

This will just end up as a Sci Fi channel crapfest. Henry Kane is coming for the souls of these talentless hacks. Time to cross over into the light, children! Speaking of souped-up releases of the originals, maybe MGM can release the 130 minute cut of Poltergeist II that is supposedly out there.

I've seen the 132 minute cut, it really is no better. Although most of the excised effects were among the movie's best.

If there truly is a curse, I hope this flick stars Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Shia LeBouf, Seth Rogan and Miley Cyrus.

They're remaking The Birds too? Now that is just blasphemous.
Oh well, as long there is money in it they'll make it. I'll stick to the originals for both The Birds and Poltergeist, but thanks anyway.

Who knows even why the original was made?
I think we need to get over remakes. It's always going to happen. Just wait till they start remaking movies from this generation like "Reservoir Dogs" or "Pulp Fiction".

Oh, this is such a bad idea. And what's worse is that, since WB just gave us that uber-lame SE of the original, the odds of us getting a fully-loaded SE to coincide with the remake are very slim.

I can see the poster/trailer now....."From the writers of Boogeyman...."
Sounds like an awful idea, but I will reserve judgement until they film it and a trailer appears.

That's like remaking Alien. Poltergeist isn't as sky-high on my horror favorite list as some other movies are, but Jesus H. Christ trapped in a TV set, is anything sacred anymore? Family Guy already remade this movie to an effect!
What's next? Phantasm? Re-Animator? The Return of the Living Dead?
Next thing you know Night of the Creeps will get remade before an official DVD comes out.

What are you talking about? The Poltergeist SE included both interactive menus and an unrelated featurette. What more could you possibly want in a 25th Anniversary Special Edition?

At least that was directed by a critically acclaimed auteur. This is co-scripted by the writer of something called "Da Boom Crew". Maybe Spielberg can ghost-direct this one too, no pun intended.
