From the Director, Direct & Exclusive

Recommend to me some DVDs that are only available directly from the filmmaker's website. I'm thinking of things like the films of Frederick Wiseman and Allan King, and the Werner Herzog Documentaries and Shorts box set.

If I remember correctly, the director of "A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon" sells a director's cut version of the movie on his website.

That's a film you'd recommend? What do you like about it?

Thanks, pjflyer. I actually had an opportunity to review that one.

Don Hertzfeld's DVD Bitter Films: Volume One is only available on his site:
http://www.bitterfilms.com/

I've seen the first 5 shorts contained on this collection, as well as the included bits from The Animation Show festival, and they're all hilariously bitter, dark, and surreal.

Probably not up everyone's alley... but you can only get this straight from the film makers.

Redsin Tower

Mostly known for their brutally sadistic August Underground trilogy... Redsin Tower is not to be missed for fans of non PG-13 horror flicks.

I was going to recommend "Everything Will Be OK". It's by far Hertzfeldt's best film and while it's not totally exclusive (it's available in "The Animation Show Vol. 3"), the version of it shown on his website is exclusive, with an extensive making-of gallery and other bits, like the film without the voiceover.
