It makes it seem like I personally endorse whatever comes up. Not only do I not appreciate that, but if the advertisers knew who was "endorsing" them, they wouldn't appreciate it.

It appears to only be affecting the less desirable posters. I haven't seen these ads yet.

My understanding is that the ads are much more subtle, and appear inside the posters message seamlessly in a posting style that closely matches their usual candor.

Other forums do this. They ones I follow have abandoned it, too.

I'm not always logged in when I read.

I do not like the add.

Correct. If you aren't logged in, you see ads. If you are logged in, you don't see ads. It's not that we want to hose lurkers, it's that we want to give you special treatment. There are always going to be ads on just about every website. It's either ads for everyone or ads for the non-registered people.

For the record, this has been the policy for a couple of months and is nothing new since the upgrade. What has changed is the first post ad, which is replacing an ad in a break between the second and third post. It was decided that this would be less intrusive to the lurkers. Believe it or not, that's an upgrade.

Sounds fair to me.

Glad it won't affect me as long as I'm logged in, but if it was my first time visiting a site and I saw ads in the first post it would also be my last time visiting the site. Hope it doesn't hurt the site long term by keeping out new blood.

It's probably just that I haven't been "logged out" in years.

People have become more and more accepting of ads throughout the years. Everybody hates them, but most of them realize that websites cost money to run. Also, the % of people who get to this site via links and search engines that end up registering is fairly low. It's a metric that's worth being concerned about, but the site's content will always keep people coming back. You guys are a pretty solid group, and there isn't much of a risk in the community failing because of ads, as long as it's kept within reason. If this site were brand new or much smaller, I'd completely agree with you.

It's probably just that I haven't been "logged out" in years.

I'm sure many people here haven't. The upgrade changed the format of the cookie, so it forced most people to have to re-login.

But like I mentioned in the other thread, apparently the new cookie format isn't working.

May I suggest gingerbread?

I thought they amped up the ads too before I noticed I hadn't logged in first. Nice screen name, IB-Dick. ;)

Sure we can! It's pretty simple. We have his IP logged. All we have to do is see if he's loading ad images in the server logs.

Perhaps a more productive use of Internet Brands' time would be creating a way for users to pay for a no-ads version of the site.

Regarding the forum, if you're logged in you have a free ad-free version of the site. Obviously, that's not true for the rest of the site but it's better than nothing.

You know, I didn't mind ads between posts (as long as they didn't scream or play music). When they're in posts, however, it makes it look like it's the user that added the advertisement. I wouldn't be too happy if I referenced your screen name and an ad for gay porn popped up next to my name.

Oh shit... he's going to make gay porn pop up next to my name now :(

I was going to say tell me too, but I don't see any such thing in the IB agreement in the link that X posted. Check the current link, not the post.

What X posted is in the Geoff rules in this sub-forum, not the forum signup agreement.

Edit: The sticky of 'Geoff's Rules' either needs to be removed or refreshed. Some things are now allowed that were not before, and some things are not welcome that were before. That thread needs to go - it's dated almost 5 years ago.

With the recent move to the IB standard, producing an edited/updated version of Geoff's rules for the DVDtalk forums is already on the "to do" list.

I believe that, when done, it'll replace the old thread/post and a link to a copy page along the lines of the previous "legal" link will be added to the page footer by IB ASAP.

(New users and members returning from a significant hiatus may also find themselves viewing said rules when they sign in).
