Thanks!

You're welcome! I tried to post this deal last night but the forum software was acting up.

I ordered the Oceans Trilogy, The Wild Bunch, Rio Bravo and Grand Prix.

There were a ton of other titles I would have bought if I already didn't have them.

Grabbed National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. It's a title I feel dumb for not having owned. For $8.99 it's worth it, even if the transfer is barely better than SD.

Looks like inventory moving fast at DD.

Alexander Revisited: Final Cut, Appleseed: Ex Machina and troy were available two hours ago but no longer do now.

Placed a big order of warner titles myself. I think this pretty much done with my HD-DVD collection.

I ordered all the Kubrick discs I didn't already have. I was beginning to think those would never drop in price.

I don't like how the main HD-DVD page have V for Vendetta prominently displayed for $8.50, even though it's no longer available.

Sadly, the Animatrix is still only in SD. However, $29 is a great deal and is actually cheaper than what DD is charging for the Complete Matrix.

Thanks OP for sharing details about the price drop/sale. And thanks to those of you who mentioned the 8% cash-back live.com details. I just joined and used that account for the checkout process.

I ordered the following In-Stock items:
Casablanca
IMAX - Galapagos
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

And these out of stock ones:
Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang
The Assassination of Jesse James

I already owned most of the ones I would have wanted. I am very close to owning every HD-DVD I would want! Then I will only focus my attention on my expanding Blu-ray collection.

I'm pretty sure I'm almost done for myself. I hope I don't keep ordering too much more. The number of movies I would want is fewer than most people on this forum, I'm sure, but I own a little over 100 titles and want only about 15 more that are on my wish-list. That's it. After that it's just going to be Blu-ray purchases for me (I hope).

Kiss Kiss, Ultimate Matrix. Its hard to go Blu with great HD DVD prices. Even though I grabbed a PS3, I don't think I'll be getting any Blus unless I get it for these prices. So the holiday season will be a quiet one for me, I guess.

The "Ultimate" Matrix has some standard DVD sides for extras but does not repeat the movies in standard def. The "Complete" Matrix does not include any of the extras that are in standard DVD format- essentially it's a stripped-down version of the other set.

I'm glad I went for the "Complete" collection.

The "Complete" collection does have some of the featurettes, all of the theatrical trailers, and the commentaries on their respective discs. It does not have the Burly Man Chronicles, "Roots of the Matrix" docs or the animatrix episodes.

Thanks to the OP for the heads-up, but is anyone else besides me of the opinion that real "blow-out" pricing for titles in a DEAD format would be more along the lines of $4.99 apiece? My local Fry's has hundreds of HD-DVDs on display at the front of the store that they're trying to "blow out" for $12 (they've just marked a few selected titles down to $10). This display has been sitting there, virtually untouched, for at least six weeks now.

I ordered 6 titles last night and only Poseidon was listed as in stock. My email order confirmation came early this morning and was pleasantly surprised to see 4 titles listed as being in stock. Of course, the 2 listed as OOS are the ones I want the most. I'm not complaining as this is certainly cheaper than jumping in the car and driving to a Wal-Mart in Canada for their $5 specials.
(I also picked up a couple of HDs at Frys for a buck or two more when I was in Las Vegas a few weeks back. Cool store! Wish I had one close to home.)

I'm with you. That's why I didn't buy much yet. I still think the prices are going to come down even further. The format is dead, surely they can go cheaper than $9 each. I'll go crazy and buy stacks when we hit $5 or less each.

Manzana
08-16-08, 09:22 PM
I agree that Fry's prices on HD-DVDs aren't that great at $9.99. I bought several $5.99 ones from inetvideo a while back, and at DD's $8.99 price I convinced myself to buy a dozen. With only a few exceptions (Ocean's trilogy and The Searchers), my rule was at $8.99 I'll only buy HD-DVD I don't already own on SD DVD, so I passed on most of them (like Rio Bravo and all the Harry Potters). I accidentally ordered the Ultimate Matrix collection for $28.99 not realizing until today that the Animatrix is in SD and the extras are the same as the Ultimate Matrix SD collection I already have. I thought all 4 movies were HD and the extras were mostly new. I was in a hurry to order and hadn't read the reviews. The upcoming Blu-Ray Ultimate set sounds better once it gets cheaper in 1-2 years. I called DD to cancel the Ultimate Matrix today and was told all but 3 titles on my order had already shipped. Now I've got to decide if I should ship it back to DD or try to swap it on the HD-DVD exchange.

Probably nobody is going to want my unopened Ocean's and The Searchers SD DVDs. Though off topic, my SD DVD price limit is now $5, HD-DVD $8, and BR $15. If and when Fry's has the HD-DVDs for $5.99 or less, then I may consider rebuying ones I already own on SD. However, at that price they will be cleared out fast.

Alan Smithee
08-17-08, 02:00 AM
Ordered a bunch of these yesterday, all were marked out of stock when I ordered but when I got the confirmation email it looks like about half will actually ship this week.

Was at Fry's in Sacramento today and they had Black Xmas and Pulse down to $5.99, The River was $7.99 so there may be some more price drops coming. I have The River on CED since I collect dead formats, so I'll have to watch that to see if it's any good and get the HD-DVD if I like it.

That's the risk of waiting because we're all waiting for those $5 specials. Thanks to sites like this, we'll get a heads up on such sales - but because of sites like this, so does everyone else. I've been stalling for awhile but decided to start picking up some of the titles I really want for double the price just for peace of mind. Maybe I'll be seeing some (if not all) listed for less but how fast will they go out the door? I felt like I got Star Trek by the skin of my teeth at DD's 20% sale and expect plenty of competition later on when the sweet spot is reached in price. And at that price, I'm sure I'll still find titles I'll want to pick up.

For 10 bucks I buy the discs that I would be shaking my head at if I missed getting them at that price. The discs that hit the 5 dollar price point are either going to be titles no one was banging down the doors for or they will be quite limited and likely hard to find.

2001 is a no brainer at 10 bucks. Beerfest...eh...I will wait for 5 bucks or below. :)

I feel pretty bad because I saw the prices drop on several titles on my wishlist Friday morning and didn't post anything here. DD's search/sort engine wasn't working properly, the only way I knew my titles had seen a price drop was because it was reflected on my wishilist. Some of them were $8.58, others (on the list above) were $8.99.

The titles I ordered were:
$8.99 Blue Planet - IMAX
$8.99 Galapagos - IMAX
$8.99 Purple Rain
$8.99 A Scanner Darkly
$8.58 Troy - Director's Cut
$8.58 V for Vendetta

All 6 were available on Friday, but three (Blue Planet, Troy, Vendetta) aren't any longer. I've finally been able to access my order history - the 3 "no longer available" titles are shown for me as on backorder. The status of the other three are "open".

It is currently backordered, but I will take a shot. I know the reviews weren't the greatest, but it has to be an upgrade over my laserdisc set.

Definitely get it. This is one of those situations where the "reviews" are way off-base, because it's a compilation movie working with elements from dozens upon dozens of different films. Frankly I think it looks great, but for people used to watching Pixar movies in HD, it looks like an eyesore -- to them.

As long as it's not "sold out" at DDD you'll be fine. I wouldn't worry about the backordered element.

I recommand this set as well if you care about the golden age Hollywood production. I bought it few months ago during 20% sale (paid about $36...)

It almost like a sneak preview what those oldies will look like in HD...

Other than those high-profile musicals, it is amazing to watch (a segment of) Marx Brother in HD!!

2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY (SE) $ 8.99 Backorder
OCEAN'S ELEVEN/TWELVE/THIRT $ 19.98 Backorder
THE SEARCHERS $ 8.99 Backorder

Went thru Live.com, so I hope to get a few bones back. Forgot to get That's Entertainment, but considering I haven't opened my regular DVD set after however long it's been out, I guess it wasn't that important.

Really odd. I got my Oceans trilogy set today. It was factory sealed in an HD DVD box, but the individual holders and the disc's themselves are Blu-Ray. Doesn't bother me as I am format neutral, but this is a first for me. Has anyone had this happen to them before?

I remember when a few people got the Blade Runner HD DVD set, and had Blu-ray discs inside. Same for the Blu-ray version, which had HD DVD discs inside. Yeah, it happens.

I heard the similar things happening with the Harry Potter sets. I would love to get the Blu-ray versions by accident if mine ever ship.

Same deal here. I laughed that there was a sticker on the front saying "Will play in Blu-Ray players only" even though the box was clearly for HD-DVDs. Then I opened it up and saw the sticker was absolutely right! Blu cases and discs. Was a pleasant surprise now that I'm purple (actually got the trilogy before I got my new combo player!). Now that's what I call a deal! :)

Yeah, that's what I figured, too. Maybe I should replace my xbox addon with the LG combo drive (for my PC). The only other disc I've had this problem with was Clerks II, but that's a fairly common issue from what I understand; I had no issues with Oceans 11, so I figured that Oceans 12 might be a bad disc.

Dumb question time... is this common with Warner HD titles? Or titles shipped by DD? And has this been seen commonly with other studios as well? I've got damn near a hundred HD-DVDs (been literally harvesting them since the format went kablooey and haven't had time to watch many of them) and don't know if I need to check them one by one or not.

The problem with the Ocean's set is that some of them say HD-DVD on the outer case but inside it has three Blu-Ray cases and Blu-Ray discs. I'm pretty sure a few people ran into the same issue with the Blade Runner briefcase. There's probably no reason to open everything and check them, but you might pop open your box sets and make sure they contain the right format.

I've actually seen something similar with a set of Blade Runner. It was real strange as it came in the HD red case but was labeled blu ray on the cover. The discs were also blu ray. Kinda cool if you have both I guess.

My oceans order shipped a couple of days ago. I dont care if its hd or bluray
