Searching seems to suck even more now. Today I'm going to compile a list of upcoming DVDs that I want (Iron Man, The Big Lebowski, The Incredible Hulk, "30 Rock", "The Office") and their release dates, so I searched for their respecitve existing threads.

5 different searches in the main forum - "iron", "lebowski", "hulk", "office", "rock" - each at least the standard 20 seconds apart. Got the same reslut every time: "1. Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms."

Weird.

If you click on the title of the thread on the Main page, it takes you to the last post. If you do it on the subforum page, it takes you to the first post. I think that is different.

What did the new forum upgrade do anyway?

The old one was very outdated and hacked to pieces, this makes us more..modern and updated. There's also some new features, which may not be turned on right now, but once everything is sorted out, things may appear. Also once everything is sorted out, things should run smoother, and search may actually work (better!). Just because you don't see anything different, doesn't mean it doesn't work better :)

This also gives is the ability to add more modern and neat vBulletin add-ons.

Hi,

I just performed a search using the terms "iron", "lebowski", "hulk", "office", "rock" and I could get quite a few results for each search. So could please tell try again and if you still get the error could please tell me which page were you searching from. The only problem with the search at present is that the pop up box does not pop up on a few pages and we are looking into it.

I just searched for the same titles, and the only results I got were from '02 and earlier.

This wont be a problem if I went back in time and haven't realized it yet. I'll look into that and update later.

Sure thing. I just did all of the searches again, through the Advanced Search page using the keyword search (entire posts). All search options were kept at their default settings. Searching the DVD Talk forum, with the child forums box unchecked, I got:

"iron" - one thread (a locked upcoming release list from 2006)
"lebowski" - no matches
"hulk" - no matches
"office" - no matches
"rock" - two threads (the current Evil Dead thread and one compiling a list of defective DVDs)

It probably goes without saying, but I did not use quotation marks in my searches.

My browser is IE 6 and my OS is XP.

(Yeah, I prefer Firefox, but I'm at work and they don't like us downloading programs on these computers.)

I started the search index before I left for home at 5:30am PST. It's now 12:12pm PST and I'm back at my desk. The index is still building, almost on the 3 millionth post. That's why you're only getting old results, and why you might not be getting any results at all.

I have seen one post with an ad in the first message like Tarantino posted on the right, inside of the posters area.

2. The Edit window defaults to embedded. That's cool. No issue.

That is the default on most every board I have ever seen. Usually, people just want to see them in their control panel, and we'd rather fault on the error of sending too few emails than too many. You can set this up in your control panel settings so that when you reply it'll automatically be email reply. :)

I think Pilot pretty much summed that up. Still, the admins and mods will be making their decision based on what they think is best for the community as a whole, not what they like / disslike. If they decide that it would make everyone happy to be able to have avatars, we'll turn them on and allow you to upload them. The issues in the past that discouraged that should no longer be issues.

That's what it's doing to me. If I log in, I'll stay logged in for that session, but as soon as I navigate away, it's as if the session expires, and when I return, I have to log in again.

I'm quite shocked about the amount of support for the post count. One thing in visiting other forums that always seemed juvenile to me was the visible post count. I won't mince words, I always thought DVDtalk was above that. The label for each user already gives you an idea of what their post count is anyways.

The admins and mods will all discuss what features we will and will not turn on or enable once IB has finished everything they need to do to get the site all configured on their end working and any bugs and such that pop up are corrected.

And PLEASE fix the search function. I just finished Prison Break Season 3 and enjoyed going back to the old threads to read what people would say about each episode. I can also confirm some funny stuff in the Advanced Search page. I searched for "commentary" (titles only) and all the results were from 6-15-05 and before. I know nothing about vBulletin, but it almost seems like whatever variable the search function uses for the "current date" is set back to somewhere in 2005 and that's why it's not finding any newer posts.

Edit: Ok, I searched for my user name (Numes) in the "Search by User Name" and it listed all my posts (including this one).

Hmm.... I tried "commentaries" and it found some threads from this year. I guess my hypothesis was wrong.

http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/34287/scorpion-king-2-rise-of-a-warrior-the/

As previously noted, the search function was screwy because the search indexes were being rebuilt. Since the forum is so large, it's got to index 5 million posts.... that takes a lot of time. It should be good now though, although I won't be able to verify that it completed until I get back to my desk on Friday.

Do you know if the issue of incomplete search results is one of the bugs being worked on? As of post #30 DVD Talk Admin didn't seem to think there was a problem with the returns.

It was one of the things being worked on, and it SHOULD be fixed. However, since we switched from a fulltext search to vB search, it will undoubtedly be different. It should be faster and produce better results.

i would assume the search indexing starts from oldest to newest

That is correct, so people should have had more problems when searching for current stuff.

I did a bit of a tutorial on this, might help someone a little.

It was answering a question on how I posted mu links with a little silver 'link' button. But it covers the of making links in general pretty thoroughly.

You can embed any IMG call into a URL call. I'm embedding an IMG call I like.

I used to type out "Link". I found that little image and I liked it better, it's more readable, and started using that.

Just post any url with the button - http://images.dvdtalk.com/images/editor/createlink.gif - then sub in an IMG ref in the appropriate place.

[ URL="http://www.google.com/"]http://www.google.com/[/URL] (I inserted the space after the first bracket to break the call, so you can see it here.)

The part in red can be anything, of course, just delete that portion and insert anything you like between the URL brackets, including an IMG ref.

Such as - [ URL="http://www.google.com/"][ IMG]http://www.dvdtalk.com/images/newbutton2003.gif[/IMG][/URL] (spaces inserted to break it so you can see what I'm doing)

Here it is with spaces removed - http://www.dvdtalk.com/images/newbutton2003.gif (http://www.google.com/)(Click it)

Like this:

Anything You Like (http://www.google.com/)

http://images.dvdtalk.com/images/editor/createlink.gif (http://www.google.com/)(click it)

http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii18/drmabuse06/Forum%20comments/sigtylerdurden.jpg (http://www.google.com/)(click it)

Or the one I'm using. http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii18/drmabuse06/Forum%20comments/link.gif (http://www.google.com/)

Too much info? There's the answer anyway.

So basically if you simply post a link to google with the Link button. Type anything you want in between the brackets in the URL 'call' or BBCode, highlighted in red above and below.

You will notice when you post a link with the 'link' button the section you can edit is ALREADY highlighted, so literally when you post the link, simply hit the 'delete' key once, and type anything you like. Even if you don't see the cursor just type what custom word you want for the link and it will work every time.

[ URL="http://www.google.com/"]http://www.google.com/[/URL]

The part highlighted in red can be anything, including an image call as covered above.

That was an actual error - I hit "submit reply", nothing happened, I hit it again, and it went to "database error", though it actually went through, twice - I recall, the forum used to disable identical posts, especially within a few seconds of each other. So it's completely the forum's fault.

Well, I am crazy, but not in this specific case. :)

There was definitely a thread where the links removal was being discussed, the last post was Geoff demanding they be re-instated, and the thread was closed. I distinctly remember looking at the end of the thread multiple times, waiting for it to be re-opened and answered.

It may have been a different thread, and not the one you linked above. Or it was that thread, and things were edited.

Others can confirm this, no?

A lot of people are mad at me about that thread. Apparently there are some "AdultTalk Haters" out there and I stumbled into the argument and was labeled an Anti-AdultTalk person, when that's not the case.

I would have been happy if AdultTalk was just moved in the list, or if there was a refresh screen between DVDTalk and AdultTalk, or if a "======" break was added between Sports Talk and Adult Talk, or if it was set so that you actually had to click "Go" and weren't automatically transported.

I have nothing against AdultTalk, and I wish them well. It's just that I'm not fond of accidentally being able to navigate to a page that has NSFW pictures while at W.

Trevor

I would have been happy if AdultTalk was <snip for my preferred option> set so that you actually had to click "Go" and weren't automatically transported.

It's just that I'm not fond of accidentally being able to navigate to a page that has NSFW pictures while at W.Above quote snipped to show my preferred option. I tried to put this edit inside the quote, but it doesn't allow that anymore.

A lot of us felt this way.

I don't understand why the forum links were removed, yet the "adult DVD reviews" links are still top center of every single page, right next to non-porn links, making it very easy to get NSFW content quickly displayed.

Add a "are you sure" button or something, please.

Found another issue.

When you click "edit" to edit one of your posts, its defaults to a simple edit and makes you hit "advanced" to get to all the formatting controls. There doesn't appear to be a user option to change this setting.

I liked it the old way, when the little advanced template was default.

Minor quibble perhaps, but I imagine this really bothers TEK.

.... if you go here (http://forum.dvdtalk.com/profile.php?do=editoptions) and scroll down to the bottom of the page, there seems to be an option to display the edit options the way you wanted. If it doesn't carry through to the self-edit situation described I can only imagine that this is a <s>bug</s> feature*.

Having checked with one of my own posts, I can't see any adverse change in the edit options as they display for me but I cannot know what you see when you do the selfsame thing. For information, looking at what it says at the end of the link I posted above, from my current workstation I'm only offered two editing options.

*When posting messages to the forums or other members, there are <i>three</i> interface types available to you. The simplest of these is a simple text box, while the last is a fully-fledged WYSIWYG editor, which allows you to format your text as you want it and see the results immediately.

<font color=blue>Depending upon the capabilities of your web browser, you may not be able to use all of these options</font>. <font color=red>If you experience problems when posting messages, try switching to a different interface type.</font>

I'd assume it was something contractual and so unlikely to elicit an "official" answer; especially given the sequence of events/posts on which you have already commented above.

With regard to the display of "adult DVD review links", methinks that this was already discussed ad infinitum, ad nauseam here in Feedback. A software upgrade and/or an unconnected change with regard to dropdown link boxes doesn't mean that the answer/position has changed. Why would it?

Just my two pennies and sorry if I've missed the point.Add a "are you sure" button or something, please.Something for IB to consider.

Yep, I had already checked that editing option in my settings. I use Firefox and I only get two options, neither of which leaves the buttons there as default. Tried it in both versions 2 and 3. Oh well, not worth going back to IE for this one little tweak.

Or my questions from the last two posts?

Sorry to sound impatient, but it looked like IB was monitoring and answering things in this thread and this feedback forum. Can we get something, at least an official "no comment" to the first thing?

I am monitoring things and answering things I feel require an answer. I'm sorry if it appears that you're being ignored. I'm reading this for "New Forum Issues", not "General Question and Answer Time" and from what I've read the Mods have done a decent job keeping everyone informed.

Jack's question was answered. What happened to the adult link? It was deleted. He was also told why it was removed.

Why was that removed and other links kept? It was part of the deal when the site was sold that certain links would stay. There are still a few that need to go (not sure it that's one of them to be honest), however link auditing isn't a high priority at this point. That specific link was investigated and removed because there was a request to have it removed. There is a lot of though put into links on this site. Where they're located, what anchor text to display, what pages to have them on, what pages to keep them off. There isn't time to explain every decision. This is not an active campaign to keep you uninformed.

Finally, about your "Edit" question... That is a change that vB made over the years. Since this forum version was so old and we upgraded through so many versions, I have no idea when and what version it was changed in. I don't know why it was changed, although it's been clear over the last couple of versions that they have moved away from the "enhanced" and "standard" versions of the "advanced" and "plain text" modes, presumably because "advanced" and "standard" was simpler-- but that's speculation. What I do know is that changing it would take a huge amount of development time and by your own admission, it's probably not that big of an issue.

I'm sorry I treated your edit question as a "state bugs here" list and didn't acknowledge it. It was duly noted.

Thanks!

I think many of us, especially long term members who post/contribute much to the forum part of your site, like to know what is happening with the site and why things are done. Do we need to know or deserve to know? Not at all. But for many of us, this is like home, and it is natural to want to keep informed and have input on decisions.

Unless I'm blind, the adult link issue wasn't answered by an official IB person until your post just now.

I hope my posts don't come off as complaining. I obviously love the site. But it is always difficult to not know what is going on. A fairly big change happened (the links being removed), with the site founder demanding action, and no full answer has been given. I understand that we don't need or deserve a full explanation, but you can't blame us for being damn curious.

I am of the school that this is your community and I am here to serve it. However, while I think you have every right to ask why changes are made, I don't necessarily have the time to answer them all. I am in charge of technical improvements of the site. I don't set policy, and I don't know all the answers regarding it. When I feel that an important issue has been asked that needs to be addressed by IB, I forward it to JuCo (http://forum.dvdtalk.com/member.php?u=85832), the Community Manager. Some questions I feel are appropriately answered by the Mods, some I don't know the answer to, and some I feel are too trivial for me to give a long winded explanation of.

Unless I'm blind, the adult link issue wasn't answered by an official IB person until your post just now.

I didn't believe that an official IB answer was needed. It was answered by Benedict, who is an Administrator, and who's answer I though was acceptable.

I have no problem with your posts, and you have every right to be curious. I believe the reason why there wasn't a reply there is that the discussion was moved from the public forum. Since I wasn't involved with that, I don't have a finite answer.
