Since I already saw it I can say, don't miss the first five or ten minutes. The fake trailers are the funniest thing I've seen in a long time.

Saw this a month ago and will be there on Wednesday! The funniest movie of the year, hands down. Can't wait until everyone else gets to see it - just pure awesome! Here's my mini-review from the previous 'hype' thread:
Tropic Thunder really delivers. I should say that I am a huge fan of Zoolander and saw it theatrically a few times, so I'm predisposed to Stiller's brand of humour, but so far for my money, Tropic Thunder is one of the most satisfying movies of 2008 and certainly the best comedy.
Tropic Thunder is a politically incorrect, in your face, balls out action comedy. It's filled with hilarious razor sharp satire, cameos galore and of course, the performance everyone will be talking about, Robert Downey Jr. evoking memories of C. Thomas Howell, as an Australian actor who dyes his skin to play an African American role.
The movie opens brilliantly with a series of fake trailers that introduces us to the main characters and gets things rolling. Stiller is in fine form here as well, and even though Downey Jr. gets a lot of memorable lines, Stiller really goes for it as idiotic action star Tugg Speedman... Jack Black doesn't have much to do for the first half of the flick but eventually gets a few really funny moments and some filthy lines that people will be quoting in the future for sure. Tom Cruise is hilarious as the trash talking head of the studio. He has a few lines that blew the roof off the place...love the bit with the Key Grip.
In a summer that has given us one of the worst comedies ever in The Love Guru (I hope Mike Myers sees this and weeps), it's a relief that this one lives up to expectations. It moves at a quick pace, the ridiculous plot actually works really well and the movie is loaded with jokes that never feel too cheap.
Right now Tropic Thunder is at the top of my list as best comedy of the year (followed by Forgetting Sarah Marshall). If you like war movies, action comedies and Stiller's brand of humour, you will not be disappointed. AWESOME. I just hope it doesn't take Stiller another 7 years to write/direct his next movie! 5/5 stars.

Agreed. The Booty Juice ad really hits you since you're completely not expecting it. I saw the movie at an advanced screening last month, where there were no (real) ads/trailers before the film, and I kept thinking to myself how can I possibly be seeing this ad in a theater .. didn't remember they were fake trailers until the second fake trailer rolled around. Priceless.

Just saw it last night. As mentioned, it was the best comedy of the year. Lots of unexpected cameos and the fake trailers in the beginning were hilarious, and certainly a great sarcastic view on Hollywood blockbusters and sequels.
Robert Downey Jr, as expected, steals the show and Tom Cruise's studio boss character reminded me of his character in Magnolia, this time with unbelievable laughs. Glad to see that Ben Stiller didn't resort to his usual comedic "over-acting".
As mdc3000 said, this film is so un-PC and it's what make this film works. Felt that the moment the film started, there was no pulling back and you start wondering how far Tropic Thunder will go...it went quite far.

Went to a midnight showing of this last night. I was pretty tired yesterday and worried that I would start to doze/have trouble paying attention. No idea what I was so worried about. I was laughing so hard through the whole thing that I didn't have a chance to feel tired. I didn't know about all the cameos or the fake trailers so each one was a nice surprise. It didn't feel long at 2 hours, but it probably could have been tightened up in a few spots. Overall it worked very well.
I'd give it 4.5/5 stars.

I liked it, but I think it's going to have trouble in the box office. The trailer doesn't look funny the way most comedies are advertised - usually the best comedies are the ones where all the jokes aren't in the trailer. Also, I think the concept is going to turn a lot of people off. I wonder if TDK can do 5 for 5

Just got back from this, it was funny, but disappointing, I laughed alot, but the beginning was pretty slow for me. There were way too many unfunny scenes sprinkled throughout the film and many lines that just weren't funny. The Tom Cruise cameo is getting ridiculously overrated as well. Those were my only negatives. Other than that Downey is perfect. Stiller is really not the main focus of the film at all. Black is good, but his subplot is pretty stupid. Still there were lots of laughs and would recommend seeing it. For the sake of comparing it to the other two big comedies this summer: Step Brothers (laughed the most, but worst movie story/directing wise out of the 3) Pineapple Express (best film in all aspects). I still recommend seeing Tropic Thunder, but don't expect to be blown away.

It had some funny parts and was worth seeing, but not something that deserves repeat viewings. I thought the sight gags were usually the funniest parts as I didn't think most of the characters were very funny. Jack Black wasn't funny at all and Cruise was OK, but his character got old. Downey was easily the best part of the movie.

I just got back from it and I agree on most of these points. Jack Black was definitely the worse character in this, RDJ definitely stole the show. I really didn't think the Ben Stiller movie "Special Jack" or whatever it was, was not funny at all. Overall I enjoyed it though, some parts were absolutely hilarious though.
Also, I think the concept is going to turn a lot of people off.
I highly agree on this. My audience was very, very light, and I got a vibe that some people didn't like the content. Especially what Jack Black says when tied to the tree, not a good reaction from the crowd.

The Tom Cruise cameo is getting ridiculously overrated as well.
I think that by now everyone knows Tom Cruise is in this film. His cameo is certainly getting a massive amount of hype - people are just so used to seeing him as a bland, humorless stiff that any deviation from that formula is seen as major news.

I really liked the film in that it didn't feel like the actors were trying too hard to be funny ... such as something like Zoolander. The biggest sense of "effort" I got was from Jack Black, which is why I agree he is definitely the weakest link of the main stars.
mdc3000
08-14-08, 10:14 AM
Yeah but that over the topness works with what Jack Black's character is going through - Portnoy is going through heavy drug withdrawl, so of course he'd act like that... and Mercury must have seen it in a theatre of prudes because his line to Alpa Chino while tied to the tree got some of the biggest laughs at my screening.
I do agree he gets the least funny stuff, but I wouldn't call him a weak link.

I gave it 3 stars. It was slightly better than Pineapple Express. However I was still disappointment by both films. Both films did not bring the funny. Tropic Thunder had a few laughs though so I cant say i didnt dislike it too much. I thought the major actors in cameo roles were wasted and especially the actor who plays Grossman didnt make me laugh. And i am a big fan of that actor. Instead of laughing I just felt uncomfortable when he danced.
Maybe the deleted scenes feature funnier material.

I am not too high on the film. For some reason, even though it's a send-up on the Hollywood process (both in behind-the-scenes production, and handling of actor's egos and insecurities), I never really bought into its tone, so it never settled into an enjoyable viewing groove for me. Sure, we get to see stars curse like sailors, spitting out lines far too polished for the situations at hand, but it's too over the top for its own good.
Robert Downey Jr. is the highpoint of the film, but I wasn't enamored by his performance, even if it was many-faceted, it just felt wasted in this particular film. I think I'm over-loaded on Danny McBride, who I really don't find all that funny, but somehow he's been able to convince many that he's worth putting on the silver screen. There are a couple of non-advertised roles (marketing-wise) that get a bit more screen time than I had expected. The Simple Jack stuff by Ben Stiller was cringe-inducing. Jack Black goes very far for some shallow comedic bits (much of it was eye-rolling for me). The rest of the cast play it almost too straight (Jay Baruchel) or not funny enough (Brandon Jackson).
I give it 2.5 stars, or a grade of C+.

I fucking loved it. Theater was packed, everyone was in to the film.
I really enjoyed it. I love Stiller and Downey, Jr. as it is.. but even Jack Black (who I loathe) had some great one-liners.
Seriously, fucking awesome movie. One of the best I've seen in awhile.

08-16-08, 02:07 PM
The opening ad and fake trailers were absolutely hysterical. Also loved the beginning of the actual film with the over the topness and Platoon spoof with Siller's arms raised slo mo to the heavens. The problem is nothing in the rest of the film is as funny.
That's not to say the film fails but there were two or three stretches that definitely fell flat and needed to be tightened. I also think the whole Hollywood lampooning needed to work in a different manner. Cruise was embarrassing himself and it was funny to watch him embarrass himself but Stiller's whole brand of comedy is so one note and nonsensically over the top it just sort of loses appeal after a while.
Well, I will add this: Stiller's movies play better in retrospect and subsequent viewings. I've got the "I'm a lead farmer, motherfucker" line stuck in my head and it still cracks me. Also the Cruise nonsense seems funnier in retrospect.

I just saw Tropic Thunder and I'm not too crazy about it. I thought Pineapple Express was much funnier (mostly due to Franco).
As for the Simple Jack stuff, I'm not PC at all but it did start to bother me after a while. They just kept coming back to it over and over again. It went from being amusing, to "beating a dead horse", to vaguely offensive.
Also, chucking the kid into the river would have been hilarious if it wasn't IN THE TRAILER!

I thought it was pretty funny, although quite a few jokes fell totally flat. I had to wonder during these parts what were they thinking in the editing room when they decided to keep them in the film.
Still, RDJ owns this movie, and is consistantly hilarious throuhout.

I was looking forward to this one. Love the cast and I do actually like Ben Stiller's directing style (love Cable Guy... yes, those words can go together).
But this... this... did very little for me. I was expecting it to be more over the top, I wanted RDJ to stay in character the whole time, I wanted Tom Cruise to be funny, I wanted it to be a worthwhile watch... but it just wasn't. As we walked out of the theater, my girlfriend's first words were "That was a complete waste of time and money" and I wholeheartedly agreed.
I haven't seen Pineapple Express yet, so I can't make the comparison, but I'm going to say PE was miles better than this.
Edited to add: I did like the fake trailers. The Alpa's one at the very start confused the crowd and lead to some hilarious nervous laughter and a loud "What the hell?" So I was primed for it from the start, but then it went nowhere.

What a great fucking movie, saw a midnight show. Played like Hearts of Darkness as done by Trey Parker and Matt Stone.
While literally everyone owned in this, this movie was the town in the last Alien vs. Predator movie (NOT a comment on this film's quality) and Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Cruise were the Alien and Predator.
The dialogue seemed straight out of an 80's action movie, even moreso than Pineapple Express. They're pretty even though.

Caught it last night at the drive-in. Really funny. Downey caps off the summer he owns with another awesome performance. Still is just as good as I expected. Black is a bit of a weak link here. He just wasn't all that funny, except when he was seriously jonesing for some drugs. Overall it was really good, but I think Pineapple Express was funnier.

08-17-08, 01:41 PM
Hmmm....a bit of disjointed-feeling movie for me. I liked the premise, liked the cast, and there were a good number of laugh-out-loud, extremely funny bits, but as sort of a spoof/homage/parody, it just didn't feel as "comfortable" a mix as did a movie like "Hot Fuzz". I enjoyed it and respected the creativity, but probably not a lot of repeat-viewing value for me.
RTisBetter
08-17-08, 02:38 PM
Saw it this morning, didn't like it. The premise is amusing and it's got terrific actors but the movie really drags, too many of the one-liners fall flat, and it just runs out of steam long before the ending. You know a comedy is in trouble when the first five minutes are the funniest of the entire film. The Simple Jack stuff was stupid, and just what in the hell is so hilarious about Tom Cruise dancing in a fat suit? That scene was straight out of Epic Movie.
A disappointment.

Wow, i'm surprised there's that many negative reactions to the movie. This was exactly what I expected out of the trailers and it delivered on almost everything. While some bits were taken a bit too far and fell flat, such as the Simple Jack re-enacting, McConaghey's agent, and Cruise's character going from a pleasant surprise to overbearing at the end, all the other actors were spot on and delivered perfectly.
Downey was amazing and stole the show, and I really want to see this again as I think I missed some good lines. Black was exactly what I thought he would be and had some of the best lines once tied up in the tree. The other two characters Kevin and Alpa Chino did a great job playing mostly serious to the other 3 leads with some good lines as well. The action was a bit over the top and unexpected, but once the director blew up it set the tone for the rest of the film.
A great way to close out the summer movies for me.

All the scenes with Downey's character, "in character", were hilarious and even Tom Cruise's bit was ok. But everything else was just kinda alright but mostly stupid. 3.5 to 4.0. very funny, but works more as a balls out action movie. i think the Tom Cruise and Matthew McConaughey bits were a little overdone. a little less and they both would have been stellar especially TC.

Off-the-wall, defiantly un-pc fun, but fairly shallow in depth of satire. Thought the film was going to take a very interesting turn with Cruise's character deciding to abandon Stiller - that whole exchange with McConaughey was great , but the film then went to reverse these intentions. Still, I laughed til my sides hurt, but I won't be revisiting this one, theater or disc.

Because most of the funny stuff was funny because it was unexpected. Once you know it is coming, not so much. The dialogue wasn't very funny. Mostly of the "let's see how many different ways we can say fuck and shit." type. That is just cheap laughs and lazy writing and doesn't do anything for me.

So I think I'd give this film a solid 8.5/10. Might catch it again in the theater. Or just buy it when it comes out. The kid on Stiller's back stabbing him is pure gold. As well as one character after another saying "You've got hands!". Hilarious.

Not sure if this was posted yet, but Rain of Madness is available now on iTunes for free.
Thanks for mentioning that. I downloaded it and its in a much better quality and much better to see in a better resolution. I can keep it in my library and watch it on my commute for a quick laugh.
Speaking of DVDs, I'm thinking I might pick this one up because of all the extra features thats expected to come with this. Rain of Madness, fake trailers, commentaries and hopefully other surprises. Maybe they'll be really nice and include a can of booty sweat or some bust-a-nut.

Saw it last night and I laughed more than any comedy I have seen in years. The sixties music with all the Vietnam War scenes was great. The only thing I kinda disliked was Tom Cruise. I think they should have shortened his scenes in the film and left the dancing to the credits. The fuuniest moment that took me completely by surprise,
When the director stepped on the mine, I could not stop laughing. Then as the scene went on it just got funnier.

I thought this was good but it wasn't one of the funniest movies I've seen this year. Like some others here, I started getting bored near the end.
Still good though. And Danny McBride has a great future ahead of him.
"You lied about fighting in the Vietnam War. It's like - It's like punching the American Flag in the face goddammit!"

that actually kind of annoyed me, what? no more Steve Coogan?!? rectified that by seeing 'Hamlet 2' a day later

I thought the movie was OK at best. Thank God for Robert Downey, Jr., he was the sole provider of the few laughs I did get from the movie. I gave it 2 stars.

I remember enjoying it in theaters, but since getting it on BD, I like it even more. I found it to be funnier the second time around, and the Director's Cut, imo, is more enjoyable.
TROPIC THUNDER TO GET A SEQUEL STARRING LES GROSSMAN?
Along with the news this week that he was nominated for a Golden Globe for his work in Tropic Thunder as sleazy movie mogul Les Grossman, Tom Cruise revealed to E! Online that he and Ben Stiller are talking about making additional short videos, and possibly a feature film, starring the repulsive, profanity-obsessed producer and sometime bootie dancer. The character, much like the male chauvanist motivational speaker that Tom Cruise played in Magnolia seems to me like someone who is funnier in small doses, but perhaps a fully comedic movie with him as the star is what his career needs right now. At least we're likely to get some more funny fake trailers out of it.

^ terrible idea...just like that article says it's funnier in small doses and the dancing was fucking lame to begin with.

Very funny movie - Downey Jr. owned it but they were all great. I also love how Jack Black was used in the film as well - he really fills in what would have been "downtime" throughout. Danny McBride was hilarious "BIG ASS TITTIES!!!!".
Tom Cruise was great as well but as others have said...a full movie may not be a good idea.

Finally saw the movie and I was looking forward to this ever since I heard it was in production. I was a bit disappointed so I gave it 3 stars, however I will watch it again as there was probably a lot of stuff I missed.

Loved it, my favorite line was probably "You was farting in the bathtub, laughing your ass off"

I finally saw "Tropic Thunder" and think it's absolutely hilarious! The best comedy movie of the year, IMO. (Yes, I did see "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" and I put that one at #2.) The spoof trailers that started it off really set the mood and the rest of the movie delivered, especially Robert Downey Jr.

I agree. FSM was decent but one that couldn't or didn't stand up to the hype. Tropic Thunder did for me.

Just watched this for the first time. Really stupid, but also really funny. You know a movie is hilarious when you can watch it alone and still be splitting your sides laughing.

I saw it last night and couldn't stop laughing. Once you realize how "full retard" this movie really is, it's just ridiculously funny. I found myself constantly saying "what did Robert Downey Jr. just say?" and then immediately another actor on the screen would ask him the same thing. I loved this movie and I think there are so memorable moments/lines from it. I loved the roles of Matthew M. and Tom Cruise too.
