Plus you've got Rep. Barney Frank introducing decriminalization legislation (which won't go anywhere, but still...)

Let's face it, even though many people don't do it, weed is accepted by a much larger percentage of the population than any other drug. It rakes in billions of dollars a year, privately, and is becoming more and more accepted as we learn of it's benefits. It is infintely less dangerous than smoking cigarettes, and it tastes WAY better. I'm glad we have a crop of stoner-friendly comics that love to make films that cater to that crowd. Even those who don't smoke weed have to admit these films are usually hilarious.

At least most of the characters are portrayed as degenerate losers.

Right, because that's what most weed smokers are?

Other than Saul, I'd say everyone potrayed in the Apatow movies have been pretty productive human beings. And even Saul is not a "degenerate."

Harold and Kumar & Grandma's Boy were bombs at the box office (H&K2 did a little better), Weeds the show averages about a million viewers.

Not exactly "popular" but it was an untapped market for a good while.

Might help with your insomnia if you got over your religiously imposed hangups.

Not to mention Chemotherapy, Glaucoma, MS-induced Muscle Spasms, Epilepsy and pretty much any chronic pain.

I wouldn't call any of the guys in the house in "Knocked Up" "pretty productive human beings".

The only reason H&K2 exists is because the first one cleaned house on DVD.

And remember, H&K3 was just greenlit by Warner.

With Obama a liberal looking to be our next President Hollywood is gearing up.
Just like when we had Jimmy Carter the pop culture was full with weed and then Regan got in and it dissappered. It depends who's in office.
When Clinton was in we had all these Jerry Springer type shows and rap music in pop culture.

Right, rap music was not part of pop culture until Clinton took office. Well, he did put Sistah Souljah on the map.

Holy crazy politics had to infilitrate the thread. I didn't even know Harold & Kumar was about weed until I saw this thread. It's not a sign of any times. If anything times are getting more conservative. I'm betting California repeals the law within the next 5 years.

When Reagan "got in" marijuana in pop culture disappeared?

As a teenager of the Reagan era, I say to you this: you're fucking high.

Funny how the "drug problem" absolutely EXPLODED under the Reagan Administration... that is, if you believed everything the Reagan Administration indoctrinated you with regarding the "Drug War".

Wow, McGruff was really rockin' on the keyboards and backup barks. I think that woman was on drugs when she co-ordinated her outfit. That.....thing on her head was pretty trippy.
