Too bad it isn't free shipping, too. I saw several new titles just over 10 bucks, but I decided to order a few HD-DVD's. I got Darkman for $8.41 shipped. Then I placed another order for Army of Darkness HD-DVD for $8.41 as well. The Deer Hunter HD-DVD is also the same price. There may be others, but those are the only 3 I found, but I only looked at titles I didn't already own...
I had to create a separate account for each order. The coupon can only be used once per account.

Ugh. How pathetic is their web site to try to find any HD DVDs. Even though there is a category, you have go through two more screens for each and every title just to see if they have any hd dvd. That is NOT the Blu Ray version. They use the wrong pictures on many titles that have multiple versions. To see the proper price and picture for the appropriate version, you have to click "see all editions available from". If they have a Blu Ray or HD-DVD version for sale, you will see the Add to Cart link there, and the appropriate price. Signs Blu-Ray doesn't even have an Add to Cart link. I used to work at Blockbuster, years ago, so I don't trust the used DVDs. I hope everything works out for the rest of you. If you get good discs, I might order some myself. Thanks for being guinea pigs!
There might be a difference between a used title that was (1) bought from a customer that sold it to the store, and (2) a previously-viewed rental copy. So I would theorize that you'd get better quality Criterions (including a decent chance you'd get the original case and inserts) than you would get ordering something recent like Juno (or even a few years old, like Ocean's Twelve).
As for new DVDs, if you get a $10.99 title and pay $3.97 shipping, you get a new one for $4.96+tax.
So, I found what I thought were a few decent prices, and put in some separate orders. I have already received shipping notices for them:
This Island Earth
Hoodwinked
Sleeper
Blue Thunder (Special Edition)
I also ordered the Buck Rogers serial for $7.96+tax.
Thanks, g, for letting us know about the sale code!
I wanted Fun With Dick and Jane (Jim Carrey), but when I get to the final screen, the site tells me it's no longer available for purchase.
If anyone finds any other good $10.99 (new) titles, please post!
I know some of these might be available for $3 or $4 in other sales sometimes, but I can only do my shopping online (I don't live in the US anymore), and I don't feel like ordering these piecemeal from eBay trying to save a dollar here or there and dealing with a bunch of different sellers.
Lastly, I have to echo others' sentiments. When it comes to buying something from them, navigating their site is ridiculous.

If you still want to keep it, try fixing it with toothpaste. It almost always works for me, even on deep scratches.
Get a pasty toothpaste (not gel), and rub it in with a soft cloth, using circular motions. Wash it off, and try it. It has completely recovered discs for me that had many scratches and wouldn't play at all.

I got my Kagemusha today. Both discs, no insert, a few marks (nothing that looks like it will hinder play). The strangest thing is that the jacket artwork is a little messed up. It won't fit correctly in the case and it appears someone has folded the edge of the front of it to make it fit. Whenever you try and fit the whole thing in that case or another, it just doesn't fit. Same situation here with the exception of the bottom portion of the case not snapping shut properly ...no biggie since I have a replacement case available. Now Man Bites Dog was a floater, but there wasn't any noticeable damage done. The case was in remarkably good shape.
Yeah, all three discs had a few superficial scratches on them, although that's to be expected and I'm sure as hell not complaining for the $3 and change paid per title. Overall I'm satisfied and just placed another order for Rashomon.

But, I am wondering about the quality of the other things people are ordering used. I expect to get no inserts and bad cases on the Criterions, but what about other things (like from the last few years). Are they showing up with their inserts and in their original cases?

Just got Rashomon in the mail. $4.99. It's as if they took a new one, removed the plastic wrap and insert, and shipped it to me. The case and disc are pristine! I guess it's hit or miss with them, and I got lucky with this one. But now I notice Criterion is coming out with a new edition of Rashomon Sept 9. Does anyone know if it's remastered or has anything extra? I hope I don't have to upgrade.

The three Criterions I bought were:
-Man Bites Dog
-My Life As a Dog
-The Vanishing
The Vanishing and My Life are both 9.99. Is there a REALLY cheap filler here?

I just bought them together.
But ugh, I received those three today and while Man Bites Dog is in perfect condition, My Life As a Dog is pretty scratched up, and The Vanishing is the freakin' remake.
Do any of you have a phone number that I could call? I don't see one on the site at all.
EDIT:
Well, make that a half-ugh. The outside art for The Vanishing is for the remake, but the Criterion DVD is actually in the case.

Every single one of these-- barring the first order (love My Life as a Dog!) and Ali G-- is a blind buy, too, but for roughly half the average rental price, it's hardly a risk.
Funnily enough, Man Bites Dog and Alphaville were half of my order during that recent B1G1-free Criterion sale at DD, but I'd be a lot more pissed if Alphaville was still available for cheap in this sale now that I finally got around to checking it out. Since it's not, though, I can remain satisfied (at least until it's inevitably re-released).

I'm using the gmail trick. Inserting periods into a gmail address at a different point each time registers as a separate email to Blockbuster, but you still get all the order confirmations to your original address. I have a pretty long gmail username, so I've been able to exploit it quite a few times :P

These are great to combine with other flicks to get two for fifty cents.
I've bought Willy Wonka, Isolation and The Haunting. I also noticed The Final Patient and Showdown at Area 51 are 4.50, but I'd rather buy something I'm remotely interested in watching.
I'd love to find out more that aren't on that list, already posted.

Yeah, I agree. I'd rather save a dollar if I can, though. Call me cheap, heh. Buying a pair of $5.99's is more expensive than a pair of a $5.99 & $4.49 movies. If that makes sense. In example, I picked up the first season of The Office with Isolation (which was a blind buy) and 24 Hour Party People and The Haunting. That came out cheaper than buying The Office and 24 Hour Party People together, and I'm excited to see Isolation but would never have thought to buy it originally. Woo!

Anyone buy any new stuff?
Most of them aren't tremendous savings, but I don't live in the US, so I don't have in-store options during sales. I get most of my stuff from Columbia House, which averages out to $5 or below for new releases, so I figure $4.96+tax is good enough--especially for things I can't get from CH.
These are the $10.99 new ones I got:
Hoodwinked
This Island Earth
Blue Thunder SE
Sleeper
Robocop: Prime Directives--Meltdown
Robocop: Prime Directives--Resurrection
Robocop: Prime Directives--Crash and Burn
Quigley Down Under
Chaos
Dance With Me, Henry
Also got (new):
Kingdom of the Spiders (plus My Super Ex-Girlfriend PVD as a filler)
Star Trek: Nemesis SE (plus Dark Water PVD as a filler)
Buck Rogers (serial)
Still considering:
Jesse Stone: Stone Cold (10.99 new)
Nomad (10.99 new)
Ring Two (8.99 new, needs a filler)
Hollywoodland (PVD)
Omen (2006) (PVD)
Producers (2006) (PVD)

Does anyone know whether Fanny and Alexander is supposed to come in the 2 disk normal dvd case that blockbuster sent it in? Or is supposed to be in one of the double wide cases like kagemusha?

It's supposed to come in one of the larger double wide cases.

4th order:
The Darkness (Unrated WS)
The Village (WS)
52 cents
For 26 cents a movie, you can't beat it!

^ I'm almost sure I tried to order The Village a few days ago and got a message it was no longer available. Surely some of these aren't coming back in stock?

I've seen things come back in stock. Blockbuster has a lot of DVDs, I would assume.

Thanks for the followup posts regarding my questions. I'm somewhat tempted to get Night Watch but I've promised myself not to buy any more sight unseen movies

Dammit, they sent me the 1-disc Universal version of Traffic instead of the 2-disc Criterion!

You can't rely on the artwork posted. You have check the details of the disc before adding it to your basket

What's the difference between the cheaper (theatrical) and more expensive (box set) criterions of Fanny and Alexander? I know that the box set includes the theatrical and television plus a making of disc but does the television (longer) version blow away the theatrical? I've never seen either the theatrical or television version before but given the price, I was contemplating buying the cheaper version sight unseen

Fyi...got a reply to my request for inserts and a new F&A cover (also got Kagemusha w/o an insert)...
Hi Brad,
I'd be happy to send you the booklets and wrap for your DVDs. I hope
this helps, and thanks for supporting Criterion!
Best,
JM
YMMV of course...i think it depends on what they have laying around....and I of course made sure to tell him I have dozens of cc's and am a loyal customer of their product.
