What answer did you get?
Just in case you got the wrong answer the answer is YES
When I first got my 360 I had both hooked into LIVE via my router.

This may work even when you activate the FREE month of GOLD on the 360. I believe every new GamerTag gets 30 days FREE. Although, in order to recover it on the original Xbox there has to be a CC attached to that account -- which is why you would need to set the auto-renewal.
*Note: Before the GamerTag comes up for renewal, you can go buy a LIVE card elsewhere online or B&M (cheaper than the $7.99 renewal rate of the 360) and when you enter that code -- it wipes your CC info OFF that account.
GamerTags can co-exist on both systems at the same time -- although they cannot be logged-in simultaneously.
