Alexi Casilla might be done for the season for the Twins. He has really been one of the biggest reasons they were winning, so that's a difficult blow.

Not only does New England take our elite pro stars (Ortiz, Garnett, Moss), now they are pilfering our local independent league talent!

The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks will be without All-Star rookie shortstop Zach Penprase. The RedHawks sold his contract to the Boston Red Sox organization, the Northern League club announced Tuesday.

Yankees beat up on the O's but still lose the series. Hopefully they'll catch the Angel's on a few off days.

Pudge for Farnsworth... nope... I can't say I saw that one coming. I'm not sure how I feel about it. Farnsworth has been pitching pretty good this season, but with the pick up of Marte a reliever was expendable. Also, regardless of how good he was pitching, Farnsworth in the 8th gives me an ulcer. So now we're looking at Veras, Ramierez and Marte as the bridge to Rivera. Veras and Ramierez have been great and Marte still needs more innings in NY to see where he is. Dan Giese seems to be our long reliever and Dave Robertson hasn't been great but I think he belongs in the pen with the rest of the guys.

Pudge is the man. He's getting up there in age but he's still a player. This does indeed shore up our offense as it takes the weak bat of Jose Molina out and puts in a proven hitter. Defensively, we're picking up a 14 time gold glover but its hard to argue that Jose Molina isn't an outstanding defensive player.

I love em because I work nights so I can watch the game in peace. Plus we are going to Twins Yankes on 8/13 so that is even better because I can go to the game and still spend the evening with the woman

Holy crap. I think Manny is gonna get traded.

Chris, you might feel a little better if the Sox pull off what Peter Gammons was talking about tonight on ESPN News. It looks like a possible 3-way with PIT, FLA, and the Sox.

FLA gets Manny
PIT gets Jeremy Hermida and 2 prospects
Sox get Jason Bay to play LF

That's a win for every team involved. Marlins can legitimately make a run at the division with Manny in the lineup. Pirates clear salary and get a 24 year old up and coming OF and prospects. Sox get Bay to slam more HR over the Green Monster and block Bay from going to the Rays who are also pursuing him and they get the headache out of their lineup.

^Wow those are some strong words coming from Manny there.

What to do? Manny is still a huge part of this offense. If he gets traded the Red Sox have lost a lot of pop out of that line up. If he stays then you run the chance of an unhappy Manny just refusing to play.

I will be one happy man if Manny leaves. Especially if he ends up with the Mets.

Officials from teams around the sport are beginning to hear details about the structure of the Manny Ramirez deal. According to one of them, the three players the Red Sox are seeking from the Marlins for Ramirez are Jeremy Hermida, pitcher Ryan Tucker and big-time outfield prospect Mike Stanton. However, the two sides also have discussed substituting Josh Willingham for Hermida.

either way, its a plus for florida

BTW, I think this whole Manny drama was orchestrated by Scott Boras. Manny's not clever enough to cook up a scheme like this to get out of his remaining option years. He's (Boras) such an ass and plays with too many teams. In the end, he'll wind up making about $10-15 million more than if the options were picked up by the Sox. When you're already filthy rich, does it matter? I remember when Paul O'Neill could have made like $2 million more by signing with another club and he stayed with the Yankees. A guy like that would never last long with an agent like Bora$$.

Willingham instead of Hermida would be a deal breaker for me if I'm the Pirates. Willingham is 29, Hermida is 24. The Sox have to be biting their nails on this one, because there were rumors that FLA might deal directly with the Pirates for Bay and forget about Manny all together. The rub here is...Manny's a much better hitter than Bay is, so if you're really doing the deal for the stretch run, you have to take Manny.

I'd just add in that I really like SP Ryan Tucker. The Marlins rushed him up this year and he got torched. He was only in AA when they brought him up and I think he needs a little more seasoning. His AA numbers were very good.

here's the latest word on the street:

The Yankees, Tigers, Rangers, and Rays have talked to the Mets about Scott Schoeneweis. The Mets might prefer to acquire a replacement if they move Schoeneweis. Arthur Rhodes is one possibility if he doesn't end up in Florida.

The Yanks might have to acquire a reliever now that they've dealt Kyle Farnsworth. Rhodes isn't on their radar though.

The Ivan Rodriguez trade could kick off other trades for catchers.

The Yankees have been getting calls on Carl Pavano. One unconfirmed rumor has the Mets interested.

The Astros are close to a deal with the Yankees that would send reliever LaTroy Hawkins to Houston for a low minor-leaguer, according to a source with knowledge of the discussions. You can't deal Manny without getting a significant bat in return. If you do, you're signaling to the team and the fans that you've given up on 2008 and you know the Sox' front office isn't going to do that. They're 2.5 games out of 1st. Getting Bay serves a second purpose too. It keeps him off the Rays and with their offense floundering right now, they (the Rays) need a shot in the arm. I think not getting Bay if you're the Rays signals to the team that they don't have the guts to make a big move even when they're in 1st place. It signals that they don't have the courage to play with the big boys in the AL East. You need commitment even from the front office when you're in a dogfight like we've got going right now in the AL East.

All told, this has been a very fun season for baseball (with the 3 team race) and maybe more so for me since I live in Tampa and listening to the buzz in this town for the Rays. They still don't understand baseball here, but it's cute to see them trying.

The Twinkies losing Alexi Casilla is a big blow. They still have the big boppers' bats in the lineup though.

When we went up to NY a few weeks ago, we went to Yanks vs. Twins. Alexi Casilla kept getting hits. An ground ball through the hole or a quail right over the IF's heads. What a pain in the neck he was. And I mean that as a compliment.

The Red Sox and Marlins are talking, major-league sources confirmed Wednesday. The Marlins almost certainly would resist giving up top prospects for a two-month Ramirez rental unless they also were getting quality young players in return.

Reports surfaced early Wednesday night saying that one of the prospects in a Ramirez trade would be highly regarded outfielder Mike Stanton, the Marlins' second-round pick last season.

"No way," one Marlins official said.

"I don't see a scenario where Mike Stanton would be traded for anyone," another team official added.

Still, here is how a deal could work:

The Red Sox would pay nearly all of the approximately $7 million remaining on Ramirez's salary.

Ramirez would waive his no-trade clause in exchange for the right to become a free agent at the end of the season, and also agree to decline salary arbitration when the Marlins offer it in December. That way, the Marlins could preserve their right to draft-pick compensation while avoiding getting crushed by Ramirez on a one-year deal.

Finally, the Marlins would include outfielder Josh Willingham or Jeremy Hermida, either of whom could replace Ramirez in left field, plus one or two prospects.
A three-way deal in which the Red Sox would end up with Pirates outfielder Jason Bay would be the best possible way for the Sox to replace Ramirez's offense, but the Pirates are said to want four young players for Bay, including two high-end prospects.

the pirates are off the table...

At the end of the day, Manny is a known commodity. The Sox can say they're afraid he'll be a pain, or that he'll drag ass down the line, but he's going to hit...period. That's who he is.

And I don't know if I take the chance on "blocking" Tampa at the cost of Manny (especially if I don't get Bay). TB is young and could wear out. They also may decide to take the shot on Baldelli actually being healthy for more that 3 days in a row. They may just not want to pay Pittsburgh's price. Meanwhile, in Manny, with all of his flaws, Boston knows what they have.

Yeah, he has been a classic "piranha" for the Twins this year, I really hope they make a move to replace him. Punto is alright, but he never seems to seem healthy, and can get ice-cold. Everett they were going to designate for assignment, and he is pretty worthless.

I love to watch Manny mash the ball as he is a hitting savant, but he doesn't hustle (a la last night's game) and is a liability in the outfield. Furthermore, he's a cancer to the clubhouse and has become a major distraction to what should be a "unified" push for the Division Title and possibly the World Series. I can't imagine this situation is not affecting the ballclub's performance and team chemistry.

The world doesn't revolve around "Planet Man Ram" and I'm quite frankly, worn out with the Manny being Manny bullshit after 8 years. This is no longer simply a fan popularity issue, but a team cohesiveness issue. Not hustling down the base paths, feigning injuries, avoiding hard throwing right handers...enough! He's made his point.

Let's see if another team, after witnessing this crap, does give him that coveted 4 year / $100 million contract. This situation does remind me of Nomar Garciaparra's situation back in 2004. Trading that fan favorite and team chemistry malcontent took a lot of courage on Theo Epstein's part. I trust him at this point. Perhaps if they deal him here, results could be similar.

Ends Rant...

Baldelli is a freakin' pipe dream. Having seen him play and get hurt again and again, I've come to the conclusion that he's pretty much done as a major leaguer. He's got a glass jaw. He'll either get hurt again or won't produce.

The Rockies informed all the teams interested in reliever Brian Fuentes on Wednesday afternoon that they would decide late Wednesday night whether to put Fuentes on the market. All those teams also were told exactly what it would take from their club to get Fuentes if the Rockies opt to trade him. HOUSTON -- The New York Yankees traded reliever LaTroy Hawkins to the Houston Astros on Wednesday for minor league infielder Matt Cusick.

Hawkins was 1-1 with a 5.71 ERA in 33 appearances this season for the Yankees, who designated him for assignment Saturday after acquiring outfielder Xavier Nady and reliever Damaso Marte in a trade with Pittsburgh.

New York also sent cash to the Astros as part of the deal. Hawkins signed a $3.75 million, one-year contract with the Yankees last offseason.

As the Red Sox, Marlins and Pirates discuss a possible three-way deal for Manny Ramirez, the sides also are discussing lefty reliever John Grabow's moving from Pittsburgh to the Red Sox. The current sticking point, according to a well-placed source, is that the Marlins want the Red Sox to add a prospect to their take in the deal.

Total grain of salt stuff, but Will Carroll at Baseball Perspectus says the Manny 3-way deal is agreed to in principle. The quote from Rotoworld, since the BP link is dragging:

Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus says the Red Sox, Pirates and Marlins have agreed to a three-team Manny Ramirez deal, pending Ramirez waiving his no-trade clause and league approval.

Carroll, not normally one of our preferred sources, has the Red Sox getting Jason Bay and John Grabow; the Marlins acquiring Ramirez, cash and a prospect from the Red Sox and the Pirates picking up Jeremy Hermida, two prospects from the Marlins and one from Boston.

Again, though, no confirmation from anyone else.

Here's Carroll's story:

We Have A Deal But …

by Will Carroll

The Commissioner’s Office has been informed of a deal involving the Pirates, Red Sox, and Marlins. The Commissioner has to sign off on any deal involving cash considerations of more than a million dollars and there was clearly going to be cash involved in any deal. There’s also some formality about Manny Ramirez waiving his 10-5 rights and no trade clause and I’ll admit not understanding the technicalities.

So here’s what Pee Wee Herman would call the “big but.” The teams, I am told, have not agreed on the specific prospects to be included in the deal. It’s expected that in addition to the principals, the Red Sox would get John Grabow and give up two prospects while the Marlins would get one prospect and give up two. There’s still a lot of haggling but my scribbling notes make it look like the structure of the deal is:

Marlins get Manny Ramirez, one prospect (BOS), and cash (likely Ramirez’s remaining salary)
Pirates get Jeremy Hermida and three prospects (two FLO, one BOS)
Red Sox get Jason Bay and John Grabow

There is still potential for this to fall apart over the prospects, though things appear closer now than ever before.

Joba was a rare occurrence. Joba was somehow ready for the majors as soon as he was drafted out of college. Remember, the only reason Joba was brought up as a reliever was because they had an innings limit on him and because the Yankees were starved for a reliever.

The situation is different now. They don't need a Joba (of course it would be awesome to have one). They need someone that can pitch the 6th/7th. Girardi trusts (and IMO rightfully so) Ramirez, Marte and Veras to pitch late in games. Scott Schowenweis could be that guy, depending on what the Mets asking price is. With or without Farnsworth, the Yankee bullpen is looking its best in years and Girardi has been handling them like a pro.

If the Yankees don't pick up another reliever, I'm sure they'll put David Robertson at the bottom of that pecking order. He hasn't been great but he can pitch as a middle reliever when the Yankees are up or down by 4-5 runs.

Oh, boy. Red Sox look like dogshit. Something needs to be done because this team doesn't look like a playoff team.
There are some cracks in the armor this year. Super Kid Ellsbury can't hit and neither can Varitek. Papi still has a torn tendon. And Manny is causing trouble.

All that being said, they are just a hot streak or two from winning the division. Their pitching is probably a tick above the Rays and Yanks, so you have to like their chances.

If the Yanks win it, I'll be really shocked because their pitching has been patchwork all season. Pettitte and Moose almost singlehandedly keeping the team in it with guys like Abreu, Jeter and Cano all hitting below their potential and no Posada all season.

^We need to start giving credit to the Yankee bullpen. They've been lights out all season. There is some ridiculous stat that they have only one loss all season when they are winning after 6 innings.

I wouldn't be as shocked as you if the Yankees came out on top (wild card or division). Their offense played like shit in the beginning of the season. Now Cano and Abreu are back to form and Damon is healthy and playing well too. Now add Nady and Pudge to this offense and they're pretty tight.

As much as I liked those moves, I would have rather the Yankees made a serious play for Jarrod Washburn. No, he's not that good but he's a legit 4/5 starter and he's more proven than Ponson/Rasner/Kennedy. It also puts more pressure on Ponson and Rasner to go out there and chuck up zeroes every game or risk getting the boot from the rotation.

The pen has been great, especially Mo, last night not included of course. Farnsworth's revival speaks volumes about Girardi's ability to handle players even ones with a fragile psyche like Farns.

Damon isn't really healthy. He's playing through a lot of pain right now. Hopefully his shoulder heals up, but it's not looking great right now. He may wind up DH-ing with Nady in LF. I'm not going to go nuts about Pudge until he returns to form at the plate. He's better than Molina with the bat for sure, but he's a shell of his former self with the power numbers. I think he was a juice boy when he was with the Rangers. The one thing you can say about him is wherever he's gone, he's had a positive impact on the team he's been traded to. Hopefully that trend will continue.

Washburn is nothing special. He's having a nice streak right now, but don't let that fool you. He gives up more than a hit an inning and walks too many guys. He's a 4 or 5 starter and in the playoffs, how many times would he really start? 1 or 2 times? I put him in the same class as Ponson, Rasner, etc. He might be useful against the Rays since they are prone to having problems with lefties, but I don't see a whole lot of value outside of that. I won't lose any sleep if they can't land him.

Gammons: Manny deal complicated

Wednesday, July 30, 2008 | Print Entry

Posted by Peter Gammons
As midnight approached Wednesday night on the East Coast, officials from the Marlins and Red Sox said a deal involving Manny Ramirez was not done. Indications from Pittsburgh were that the Pirates were not satisfied with the players they were receiving in exchange for sending Jason Bay to Boston. And in California, Ramirez's agent, Scott Boras, said he had been told nothing, which means nothing has been completed in terms of Ramirez's waiving his no-trade rights or in completing paperwork to send to the commissioner's office.

So, the complicated three-way deal might go down close to Thursday's 4 p.m. ET deadline. Ramirez wants out, and is willing to go to Florida. The Marlins want him -- and what he means to their pennant chances and pursuit of a new ballpark. The Red Sox clearly are willing to finance Ramirez's exit.

But the value of the young players was a sticking point late into the night, and one Red Sox official said, "This is anything but done."

The Nomar Garciaparra deal in 2004 went down to minutes before the deadline, and there was so much confusion the Twins never received the second prospect they thought they were owed. This might be Nomar Redux.
