CSI Season 7 question

My wife and I have been working our way thru the CSI seasons and have reached Season 7. I know the reason in the show why Grissom took a leave, but what was the reason in real life? I also heard that he will be absent for at least half of Season 9 too due to other work commitments.

Just curious that's all

William Petersen had the chance to do a stage play in Providence, Rhode Island called "Dublin Carol", and he wanted to do it because he missed performing on stage so the CSI producers happily obliged him, and used it to their advantage by creating an interesting mini-arc with a new character.

Petersen is LEAVING the series after the 10th episode of the upcoming season, but will remain an executive producer and will make guest appearances from time to time.

Nick - thanks for the explaination. I remember it had something to do with the stage. We just watched the first 2 episodes with the new character.
