Which one of these movies would you consider the best or your favorite movie of 1999?

hardercore

The Insider blew me away, so I went for that. Loved American Beauty, Toy Story 2, Fight Club, Megnolia as well. '99 was a terrific year for film.

Fight Club is my favorite movie of all-time, and clearly, that year. Magnolia would've been my runner-up (#4 on my all-time list) with The Matrix not too far behind. I own and enjoy all of these movies, although I'm surprised someone actually picked Eyes Wide Shut as the best of 1999.

Fight Club. The Matrix was mindblowing, but not like Fight Club. I recently rewatched it after three or four years and it still hooks me from start to finish. It's themes, I believe, will always be relevant and important.

'The Limey'... far and away my pick for the best that year... a damn near perfect film... i can't say enough good things about this movie...

'Ride With The Devil'... is probably #2... what a great film...

also 'The Iron Giant' is worth a mention... and 'The Minus Man' which i really like... 'Being John Malkovich' was an amazing film... 'The Cider House Rules'... 'The Green Mile'... 'Bringing Out The Dead'...

these would be my favorites from that year

1999 was a good year...

This was an awesome year for movies. I went with the Sixth Sense as it's still one of my absolute favorite films. Fight Club, American Beauty, and the Matrix all rank high in my book too.

Fight Club for me.

A solid year no doubt. Never quite got the huge appeal of The Matrix (movie dragged for me, despite some cool effects also had a generic vibe to it (my own fault having seen all its "inspirations" long beforehand)) but that really took off. No love for Episode 1?.

My favorite was The Cider House Rules. I loved that movie. Saw it twice in the theater.

The Insider was great as well. In fact, that's aged about as well as any movie I saw that year.

It's hard to narrow it down though since there were so many excellent flicks released that year. One that hasn't been mentioned yet is South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut.

But I don't think American Beauty was even "good."

I still say The Sixth Sense is the best movie of 1999, and I actually enjoy it on repeat viewings even though I know the ending. It is just a creepy movie, and I think Willis should have gotten a best supporting nomination for that role.

Where is The Green Mile on that list? Great movie.

07-03-08, 12:16 PM
The Insider, with The Straight Story, The Limey, Eyes Wide Shut, and Magnolia fairly close.

Is there a film more overrated than Fight Club? Probably not, maybe The Shawshank Redemption or Pulp Fiction.

RichC2
07-03-08, 01:06 PM
Fight Club had a perfect mix of excellent direction, visuals, acting, humor, and bored working class male material. It either registers or it doesn't. The ending "twist" is a bit much, but it's an extremely fun ride with a great amount of humor. And a "It's in you to get out of it." motto.

But as with any movie, there are going to be people who praise it and who hate it.

Is there a film more overrated than Fight Club? Probably not, maybe The Shawshank Redemption or Pulp Fiction.

I personally don't understand the love for The Matrix or Star Wars, and I love Scifi. The Sixth Sense was the most overrated film of '99. The first 30 minutes of Stir of Echoes were more effective than the entirity of TSS, which was inert both as a "scary movie" and a drama.

One bad/cheesy line, and one bit of serious miscasting doesn't negate all the good stuff in The World is Not Enough. Hell, the pre-credits sequence alone is better than most movies from 1999...

(I don't think 1999 was all that great of a year for movies.)

If you were talking about Goldeneye at least you'd be talking about a good Bond movie (of course it wasn't '99). But to elevate one of the weakest of all Bond movies to the best film of one of the best movie years of all time is incomprehensible.

(I don't think 1999 was all that great of a year for movies.)
I'd say you're in a small minority with that opinion.

All my opinion, of course. (And just about everyone else's. ;) )

This thread just got me thinking what I've told people I know for years now: 1999 was the last great year, and every year has been downhill since. In terms of a lot of things, not with just entertainment (I recall a lot of great TV from that period as well) but politically, economically, our standing with the world as a whole.

Just for fun, here's the best according to this (http://www.theyshootpictures.com/gf1000.htm) site that combines a bunch of critics top lists (the numbers are where the film ranks in the top 1000 of all time):

I agree with the critics. ;) Looking at the list of titles in the poll, I see some good movies and some entertaining movies, but not a one would I consider to be "great" or a classic... then again, I believe the '70's were the last truly great decade for cinema.

From the titles mentioned in this thread, I guess I would choose Fight Club as the best, though I was more entertained by the South Park movie.

Although i firmly believe South Park: Bigger, Longer, & Uncut should be on that list.
