I too hope its better than Pirates 3.
I say they seriously need to downsize the amount of visual effects if they use if they a fourth film. All the effects they used in Pirates 3 were for the most part just boring and a waste of money. Just get a good compelling story and some sword fighting and johnny Depp. Thats really all you need.

Besides, isn't there a 15+ year moratorium until 4 can come out? Oh wait, wrong franchise.

I think a prequel would work. It could show how Sparrow got his compass/map and his ship and the origin of his character.
Maybe a sparrow vs. Blackbeard kinda thing/

that article is from September 2007, it's kinda hard to run on news from almost a year ago. I would like to see the remake with possibly Christopher Nolan directing and Christian Bale as the lead. I just think that kind of combo, especially with their present work as well, would do justice for the property.

Sounds like panic from Disney since their Narnia movies aren't working out as well as they might have hoped.

Before they work on signing Depp, they should work on signing an EDITOR. Sitting through the last one was like pulling teeth.

I do agree about the length on Prates 3 myself. AND I NEVER complain about movies being too long. I think 1 and 2 are fine the way they are but Pirates 3 could easily have been 30 minutes shorter. Seriously when I say a movie is too long you know it is definitely too long.

I hated part 3 in the theater, but I watched it again on DVD a couple of weeks ago and I really enjoyed it.

For my money, the "Davey Jones" effects are far and away the best CGI I've ever seen, and make parts 2 and 3 totally watchable on their own merits. So damn impressive...

I dig the Pirates franchise quite a bit, much more than most recently developed franchises, and look forward to parts 4, 5, and beyond.

And then Dick Cook says, "Well what do you think? Johnny Depp as Tonto???"

The crowd goes mad-wild and he says "OK, done."

Then goes onto ask if he thinks we should have Johnny back for another Pirates film? T he crowd goes mad, Dick Cook says "OK, done. "The theatre erupts. Johnny mumbles some things in character and then darts off. Maybe was on stage a total of a minute and barely said anything. It was such a fun day!

Sigh. This franchise is so cooked. The first, so great. The second, terrible. The third, even worse. Where can they go from here!?

The problem with the second and third installments is that they took one story and stretched it out across two movies. The plot of Dead Man's Chest and Worlds End was a fucking convoluted mess; they should have trimmed out all of the fat and made a single, lean, economical action flick. And then did something else for the third movie.

A fourth movie would be good if they can just make it into a single, entertaining action movie.

Depp to reportedly (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1070374/A-swashbuckling-good-deal-Johnny-Depp-paid-32m-star-fourth-Pirates-Of-The-Caribbean-film.html) earn $56 million for Pirates 4. Efron To Star In Pirates Of The Caribbean 4?

17 October 2008 10:31 AM, PDT

Heartthrob Zac Efron will pick up the biggest pay cheque of his career when he signs on to star in the fourth Pirates Of The Caribbean movie, according to reports.

Disney bosses want to groom Efron to eventually replace Johnny Depp as the star of the franchise, and they are offering him $10 million (GBP5.4 million) to star alongside Captain Jack Sparrow in the next installment of the blockbuster film series.

A source tells the National Enquirer, "Disney knew that Zac was reulctant to do any more High School Musical movies. He had already said there was 'no way' he'd return as Troy. So the Disney brass came up with an offer he couldn't refuse."

In-demand Efron has also been slated to take over from Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe on Broadway when the Brit's run in Equus comes to an end. The 21 year old hunk has denied those rumours.

http://www.imdb.com/news/ni0586475/

What's next? Miley Cyrus appearing in the film to replace Kiera Knightley in future Pirates films? Vannesa Hudgens is the only Disney actress who should appear ina Pirates film. And she has to appear wearing something skimpy.

I wouldn't expect any less from Disney or Hollywood. They say: Well High School Musical is popular, so let's throw the star from that to Pirates of the Caribbean, so we can bring the tween crowd and sell Zac Efron dressed as a pirate on toys, posters, calendars, etc. That will make us millions!!!

Verbinski's had enough 'Pirates'
Director to focus on 'Bioshock'
By MICHAEL FLEMING

It's no longer a pirate's life for Gore Verbinski.

After spending the better part of the last six years directing the "Pirates of the Caribbean" trilogy, which grossed $2.6 billion worldwide, Verbinski has informed Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer that he will not helm a fourth installment that's expected to set sail in 2010 with Johnny Depp back as Captain Jack Sparrow.

Sequel is in development but not yet greenlit. It's unknown how Verbinski's ankling will affect the pic's schedule.

Verbinski will instead focus on other projects that include "Bioshock," a Universal Pictures adaptation of the bestselling vidgame that has a John Logan script and is likely to be Verbinski's next film as a director.

"I had a fantastic time bringing 'Pirates' to life, and I am eternally grateful to Jerry, Johnny and the rest of the creative and production team," Verbinski said. "I'm looking forward to all of us crossing paths again in the future."

Verbinski is still working with Depp, though. He has been directing "Rango," a CG-animated film for Paramount Pictures, with Depp voicing the title character. Logan wrote the script based on an idea by Verbinski. Paramount has set a March 2011 release.

Verbinski's U-based Blind Wink Prods. is developing several other potential directing vehicles, including "Clue," a live-action murder mystery based on the Hasbro board game, and a drama based on a Wall Street Journal article about the online fantasy role-playing world and its debilitating impact on the real lives of players. Steven Knight ("Eastern Promises") is penning the latter.

CAA reps Verbinski.

I enjoyed the second. But it's really just based on a few great moments, and the effects. It's a movie that's carried by it's effects. They're just enjoyable to watch. Along with Lord of the Rings, it's the closest to photo-real that I've seen yet.

Other than the effects, I just went crazy for a few parts (Jack facing the mouth of the big monster and the way the last minute or two worked). Everything else what just alright, and carried by how cool and detailed everything looked.

I'm glad to see that he's moving on. This will hopefully make the Bioshock movie better but will also hopefully push the Pirates 4 movie in a new creative direction. Wait did I just say new creative direction for a movie Bruckheimer is attached to? Damn, my coffee must have not kicked it yet.

"This afternoon, Walt Disney Pictures made the big announcement at the D23 Expo that the fourth "Pirates" film will hit theaters in Summer 2011 and be titled Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

Speculation has already begun that the subtitle "On Stranger Tides" refers to author Tim Powers' novel with the same name. The following is the official description of the book:

Puppeteer John Chandagnac, who was sailing to Jamaica to get revenge on the uncle who had stolen his father's inheritance, has no choice but to join the buccaneers who have taken him prisoner--and soon, known now as the pirate Jack Shandy, he finds himself learning to survive in a treacherous new world of cutlass-fights, sea-battles, and voodoo magic on sun-blinded tropical islands. The legendary Blackbeard is assembling a ruthless navy of pirates living and undead to voyage to the fabled Fountain of Youth, and Jack Shandy must use magic, swordsmanship, and even his puppeteer skills to free himself and the girl he has fallen in love with from Blackbeard's deadly supernatural domination.

At the end of the third "Pirates" movie, it is shown that both Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) and Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) are next eyeing the Fountain of Youth. Barbossa has "stolen" the Black Pearl back from Sparrow, but Sparrow has cut out the most important part of Barbossa's map to the Fountain of Youth.

If they will be adapting the book, will Sparrow and Barbossa have to team up again against Blackbeard? We'll have to wait and see how it will turn out."

That was my exact feeling after the first movie. It's also why I was upset to see WIll and Elizabeth return. As far as I was concerned, their story wrapped up in the first movie. Each subsequent movie should have a featured a different cast of characters whose lives are turned upside down by the arrival of Captain Jack Sparrow.

Yeah. They're basically pulling a Die Hard 2. If you recall, Die Hard 2 was based on a different novel from a different author than the novel on which Die Hard was based. They simply credited the author and his work despite the fact that they changed things and characters around to fit it into the universe of the previous movie. Undoubtedly, the same will happen here.

Same with DIE HARD: With a Vengeance, which was based on the book "Simon Says" and not originally about John McClaine at all.

Not exactly. Although you are correct about the title and that it originally did not feature John McClaine, you are wrong about it being a book. Simon Says was an unproduced spec script that was retooled into DIE HARD: With a Vengeance.

The third movie was extremely bloated, and I wasn't thrilled with the second and third basically being one movie. I'm down with a fourth, though.

"Dead Man's Chest" could have been awesome. If it would have just been about Jack Sparrow vs. a Cthulhu-like Davey Jones captaining a Flying Dutchman crewed by Innsmouth fishmen who could summon the Kraken, it would have been the fucking coolest thing ever.

But then they tacked on all of this political intrigue involving trade companies and corrupt politicians and Will's Daddy issues and spilled it over into the third movie, and all we were left with this big fucking mess.

I've watched DMC and AWE a couple of times each, back-to-back in one case, I couldn't even begin to explain the plot to someone. It's like The Matrix sequels, where the writers and director let the mythology get away from them to the point where it crawled up its own ass.

Exactly right. In fact, the movie is borderline unwatchable until Davey Jones makes his first appearance. The movie had absolutely no focus until that point.

But then they tacked on all of this political intrigue involving trade companies and corrupt politicians and Will's Daddy issues and spilled it over into the third movie, and all we were left with this big fucking mess.

To make matters worse, they made Jones into a total pussy in AWE. And they killed off the Kraken offscreen between the two movies. And then we have Becket whining about Jones not taking any prisoners. What was the point of taking control over the deadliest threat in the seas if you don't want it to kill all your enemies?

But the worst offender is when they brought the chest aboard the Flying Dutchman. What was stopping Jones from submerging the ship and drowning his oppresors so that he could reclaim the heart?

I've watched DMC and AWE a couple of times each, back-to-back in one case, I couldn't even begin to explain the plot to someone. It's like The Matrix sequels, where the writers and director let the mythology get away from them to the point where it crawled up its own ass.

If you watch the special features, you'll see that the writers didn't even finish the script until well into the actual filming of the sequels. They just tossed in a bunch of half baked ideas and called it a script. If often wonder if the sequel was meant to only feature Jack and the crew of the Black Pearl but someone at the studio insisted that they wanted Will, Elizabeth, Norrington, and everyone else back.

Hollywood was shocked Friday afternoon by the sudden dismissal/resignation (take your pick) of Walt Disney Studios chairman Dick Cook, but no one may have taken it harder than Johnny Depp.

Speaking to The Los Angeles Times late at night in London, Depp said Cook's departure had created "a fissure, a crack in my enthusiasm at the moment" for the project.

Depp, who recently appeared at the first official Disney convention, D23 Expo, to support both his role as the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" and the new "Pirates" movie, credited Cook with standing by his interpretation of the character Captain Jack Sparrow when others at the studio were questioning his un-Disney like direction.

Depp told the Times, "He's instantly trustworthy. And you generally don't meet people at the studios you trust. He's a rare beast."

The actor also said he currently has a potential deal in place for "Pirates 4" and whether he moves forward or not will depend on how good the script is, but was presently "shocked and sad" over the day's events.

A lifelong employee at Disney, Cook began his career with the company in 1971 when he started as a monorail operator. By 2002, then CEO Michael Eisner made him chairman of the studio, one of the most senior positions in the company. Unfortunately, the studio side of the operation -- his responsibility -- lost $12 million in the third quarter due to financial disappointments such as "Bedtime Stories" and "Confessions of a Shopaholic." Current CEO Bob Iger blamed the losses on the quality of the overall slate in a conference call with Wall Street investors, but no one in the industry truly believed Cook could loose his job. Clearly, having hits such as "The Proposal" and "Up" over the summer didn't restore Iger's confidence in the well liked studio chief.

Who will take over Cook's position as studio chairman now and convince stars like Depp to stay in the fold is the $100 million dollar question that will have the town buzzing over the weekend. Will Pixar head and Disney Animation Chief John Lassiter take the top spot? Could Kevin Feige, president of production at newly acquired Marvel Studios, really ascend to a position of that stature so quickly? Could Stacey Snider somehow get out of her DreamWorks deal to run the studio? Or will it be an unknown who will have an even harder time proving himself to the likes of Jerry Bruckheimer, Richard Zemeckis and Burton? All are major players with projects or longtime deals at the studio who will be wary of someone without a strong track record.

Needless to say, Cook's replacement and possibly Iger, will have a call to Depp on the top of their list of things to do.

I didn't see the 3rd film and really don't care all that much if they make another but I'd be surprised if Depp passed on this. It will get made.

The new chief is nothing without the support of Richard Zemeckis.

I've watched DMC and AWE a couple of times each, back-to-back in one case, I couldn't even begin to explain the plot to someone.

Well I must be crazy because the plot seemed understandable to me. Yes there were lots of layers, but I think I have a good handle on it.

Beckett essentially wanted to end piracy, that's the main plot mover. So he knew Davy Jones was the key, that was why getting his heart was so important. He could control the sea if he could control Jones. Meanwhile Will had Daddy and girlfriend issues that would tie into Beckett's plans. Sparrow owed a debt to Jones and also wanted to use Will, and also wanted Jones's heart. The Pirates wanted to save piracy. Calypso was the key to stopping Jones. All the Pirate Lords needed to be united to get Calypso. The "bad" guys lose, and the "good" guys mostly win. That about sums it up, right?

I'm not saying there aren't plot holes, and lots of subplots, but I didn't feel overwhelmed or the slightest bit frustrated by the convolutions.

And anyway, it's not the plot that interests me about any of the films, it merely functions to get the characters into interesting interactions and set pieces. I felt the sequels gave me what I wanted.

Lol, that's about right. You know he has a huge paycheck coming for this one, probably even more lucrative than the last two sequels.

I'm not saying that he can't but...I think Depp has more passion for his art over the cash. I mean..he's worked with Terry Gilliam...a Director whom he'd probably work with for free (and seems like he recently did cuz his cash went to Ledger's daughter I believe). In fact...I can't wait for his next Gilliam film.

Rich Ross named chairman of Walt Disney Studios

October 5, 2009 | 2:26 pm

Rich Ross, the television executive who helped revive the moribund Disney Channel, now has to prove he can work movie magic at Walt Disney Studios.

The 47-year-old former talent department head has been tapped by Disney Chief Executive Robert A. Iger to fill the post formerly held by Dick Cook, who was ousted last month after clashing with his boss and failing to deliver enough hits over the last year.

Iger will look to Ross to reinvigorate Disney’s flagging box-office fortunes and develop film franchises that can be sold across the entertainment giant’s lines of businesses — including theme parks, consumer products and television — as well as grapple with a host of technological issues that are quickly reshaping Hollywood.

“Rich has an outstanding record of creating high-quality family entertainment that delights audiences around the world,” Iger said in a prepared statement. “With his success in building the Disney brand across many of our businesses, his astute marketing sensibility, his proven ability in working effectively with talent and his skill at navigating complex global markets, I’m confident he’s the perfect leader for our studio group.”

By picking an executive from outside the clubby precincts of the movie business, Iger is signaling that he wants Ross to shake up a studio that the Disney chief views as entrenched in the past, from relying on high-priced, aging stars to open films to spending extravagantly on movie marketing.

To achieve this, Ross may be borrowing liberally from the playbook he followed to turn around Disney Channel, which has eclipsed the movie studio in recent years as a hothouse for talent and ideas that could be packaged and resold across the company’s various platforms. Ross has proved himself adept at turning entertainment into brands -- high profile examples include "Hannah Montana," which launched pop star Miley Cyrus' career, and "High School Musical,' which was created for television but quickly found life — and revenue — in recorded music, a big-screen blockbuster and a stage show.

Indeed, at a company that stresses team playing among its executives, Ross may be the ultimate team player.

“I am very excited to play a key role in continuing the storytelling legacy of The Walt Disney Studios. There has never been a better time to entertain our global audiences with high-quality and compelling content and introduce new characters that will become family favorites. I look forward to working with Bob, the team at the studios and all of our Disney family towards that goal,” said Ross.

Since his arrival at Disney Channel in 1996, Ross worked closely with other divisions of the Burbank-based company. For example, when the channel cast Cyrus as Hannah Montana in 2005, Ross ordered an internal “road show” to introduce the new program to other parts of Disney. Within six months of the show’s premiere, the consumer products group was shipping Hannah Montana clothing to stores — shaving a year off the time required for new TV-linked merchandise to reach retail outlets.

Such cross-division collaboration is a priority for Iger, and something he felt was lacking at the movie studio. Moreover, Disney Channel, under Ross' lead, has become a model for Iger’s oft-touted franchise strategy, in which entertainment properties can feed other parts of the Disney empire.

A prime example is 2006's “High School Musical” — a chaste tale of improbable high school romance between a brain and a jock. Ross revved up the Disney marketing machine, leading to the release of a soundtrack that was a top-selling CD, a sold-out 42-date concert tour in North and South America, a show at Disney’s theme parks and a slew of merchandise.

The 2007 sequel, “High School Musical 2,” became the highest-rated telecast in cable history at the time, and the third installment in 2008, “High School Musical 3: Senior Year,” raked in more than $250 million in worldwide box-office sales. Merchandise based on "High School Musical" and other Disney Channel movies and TV series accounted for $3.6 billion in retail sales worldwide last year -- not including DVDs and CDs.

But despite his success in television, Ross has virtually no experience in feature films — a more protracted process and one encumbered by big egos, longtime habits and much higher-cost structures. He must quickly reach out and calm anxieties among Disney’s movie talent, including director Steven Spielberg, producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Scott Rudin, and stars like Johnny Depp — all of whom were close to Cook and distraught over Iger pushing him out.

High on Ross’ list doubtless will be figuring out how to integrate the latest planned addition to Disney’s family, Marvel Entertainment, whose library of super-hero characters the studio will seek to exploit. Disney has lagged behind rival studios that have successively produced film adaptations of Marvel properties such as X-Men and Spider-Man.

Another priority for the incoming studio chief will be forging ties with Spielberg’s DreamWorks Studios, which recently signed a multiyear distribution deal with Disney and expects to supply the studio with four to six movies a year.

But Ross’ greatest challenge will be to address Disney’s creative dearth. Although Disney isn’t the only studio to have suffered a bad year at the box office, the division lost $12 million in its most recent quarter — its first loss in four years. A number of its recent movies, including the Adam Sandler family comedy “Bedtime Stories,” the costly 3-D guinea pig saga “G-Force,” and the latest installment in the 1970s "Witch Mountain" sci-fi adventure franchise, “Race to Witch Mountain,” failed to attract wide audiences.

And like all studio heads, Ross will find himself grappling with a number of sea changes in the business caused by a slump in DVD sales — the most lucrative part of a film’s revenue stream — and technological shifts that have changed how, when and where people watch movies.

I thought there was a separate thread on the Dick Cook ouster, but I couldn't find it.

Minor update, from Dark Horizons:

Author Tim Powers tells The Los Angeles Times that it seems pretty certain that elements from his 1987 novel "On Stranger Tides" will be used in Disney's upcoming fourth "Pirates of the Caribbean" film which is using the same moniker.

Powers confirmed that Disney optioned the book, which deals with a race against Blackbeard to reach the Fountain of Youth, nearly three years ago. He adds that "My main character doesn't overlap with Jack Sparrow at all [in personality or circumstance]; they're totally different characters. I suppose they might overlap the Geoffrey Rush character Barbossa and Blackbeard. The only thing I feel certain they will hold on to is the Fountain of Youth since they telegraphed that at the end of the last movie."

Terry Rossio, regular "Pirates" script writer, admits to Empire that they will use the book to some extent - "Tim Powers is an amazing writer - and it's a great title. It allows us to draw material from that universe and his expertise."

"Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" sails into cinemas Summer 2011.

I like the author's assumption that "they might overlap the Geoffrey Rush character Barbossa and Blackbeard". I always liked Barbossa better than Jack Sparrow and Geoffrey Rush was the highlight of the last movie and the reason I have it on BD. Bill Nighy was great too but I felt they really downgraded his character from how badass he was in the second movie.

Rich Ross restructures Disney movie studio

November 11, 2009 | 12:32 pm

Rich Ross is putting his mark on Walt Disney Studios, bringing over a technology guru from Pixar and promoting the home entertainment chief to a newly created job. In addition, Jim Gallagher, the president of marketing, has left the studio.

The moves reflect Ross' attempt, in close coordination with Walt Disney Co. Chief Executive Bob Iger, to remake the studio to better reflect the new ways audiences are viewing movies in theaters, at home and on digital devices.

"The studio restructuring will embrace new possibilities and opportunities and find innovative ways to provide quality entertainment that is readily available," Ross said in a statement.

Bob Chapek, formerly president of home entertainment, has been promoted to the newly created role of president of distribution, in which he will oversee distribution across all platforms, including movie theaters, DVDs, pay TV and digital. In recent years, Chapek has led the studio's digital initiatives, particularly with Apple Inc.'s iTunes Store. Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs is the largest individual shareholder of Walt Disney Company stock. Chuck Viane, previously president of distribution, will continue to oversee theatrical distribution and will now report to Chapek.

Greg Brandeau, who oversaw technology at Disney-owned animation studio Pixar from 1996 through 2001 and again starting in 2004, is taking the newly created role of chief technology offer.

Alan Bergman, a 13-year studio veteran who is currently president of Walt Disney Studios, retains that job and adds oversight of "studio franchises," an emphasis that reflects former Disney Channel chief Ross' emphasis on brands that can be utilized through the Disney company's many businesses.

Production President Oren Aviv, whose future has been the subject of much speculation in the industry, retains his job overseeing development of live-action movies.

Gallagher's departure leaves Disney without a president of marketing. According to a person familiar with the studio's plans, a replacement will be named later and report directly to Ross.

Since the ouster of former studio Chairman Dick Cook in September and his subsequent replacement by Ross, two other top executives already have left the company: Daniel Battsek, president of specialty label Miramax, and Mark Zoradi, president of the Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Group.
