Re: the graphic novel...I bought this long ago and haven't read it yet. Thinking about picking it up again, but was wondering if it has anything to do with the new movie and thus provide some spoilers. Thanks.

It has nothing to do with the new movie, but is one of the greatest comic books ever written in my opinion.

Miller's Dark Knight Returns is set in the future, and has been rumored to be considered for its own film treatment since the advent of the technology used for Sin City/300 etc.

That said, it has absolutely nothing to do with the film coming out other than the titles are similar. I would read it immediately. Just my 2 cents.

k. didn't think it did, but wanted to make sure, since Frank's works have been used a lot lately and didn't know if the new movie was some kind of adaptation.

Absolutely read it immediately...no spoilers, especially considering in the trailer the Joker asks the Batman to 'hit me' and he doesn't. He has less hesitation (not none...no spoiler) in TDKR.

Also, the Bats vs Supes fight is one of the best I've ever seen in the times they've fought and Bats has stomped Clark's ass.

I think the films are much closer to Batman: Year One (which Frank Miller involved) than The Dark Knight Returns.

I wonder how much the first print of The Dark Knight Returns comic sells now?

TDK2 where Superman "intrudes" in the Batcave, then Batman procedes to "escort" him out by saying, "Get the hell out of my cave". Miller tends to job other DC characters when it comes to Batman. Just read All-Star Batman & Robin. Green Lantern never really stood against uber Dick Grayson.

I'll admit that it took me a couple of reads through correctly to understand the first post i.e. OP has contemplated reading the classic comicbook of a similar name but has concerns that it may impact on his enjoyment of the imminent film.

The paradox is that a discussion of the comicbook is going to be difficult without alluding to and comparing its content to what one knows in advance of the film.

If at all worried, the obvious answer is to see the film first and read the book after. There are sufficient alternative Batman titles to peruse in advance if so inclined.

(I do not propose to edit any posts so far but, if anyone contributing here who wants to concentrate on the comicbook and is at all concerned about the content of their post impacting on anyone's enjoyment of the film, maybe there is an old thread somewhere that can be bounced that discusses the original book alone).

Really, what major plotlines can you deduce from that besides the Supes thing? That should be ASSUMED in their tussles. Has Superman EVER kicked Batman's ass? Bruce always gets away and/or turns it around. The only one that came close was the story I remember from a few years ago where a controlled-Clark is trying to kill him and then Supes gets zapped out of his mind mojo funk.

Truthfully, I like having the foreknowledge so I can see the nods and homages to the source material, but like almost any movie-made-from-book, the ending is usually radically different or significantly altered. I would never worry about 'ruining' a movie because you've read the book. It just gives you perspective.

Correct. The Dark Knight Returns, while one of the best comic books ever written, has pretty much nothing to do with the film The Dark Knight. Whereas The Long Halloween is an immediate influence on the film.

I heard killing joke had some influence as well. From what thier saying, ledgers joker is brilliant. And by the way, never read Dark Knight Returns? That was must reading in the 80's......

Oddly enough, I loved Long Halloween and thought Dark Knight Returns was way overrated. So it suits me pretty well

I'm more excited about the new Sin City movie because it will have original stories.

What I really hate about comic book movies is that they tend to mirror the original stories too much. I'm looking forward to The Dark Knight for the new interpretation of the Joker.
