Official E3 Website (http://www.e3expo.com/)

With E3 a couple weeks away how about a fun little discussion. To get warmed up, let's start with: Post 5 games you want to hear about most from the event and 1 'surprise' title you want to see.

In no particular order:
1. Beyond Good & Evil 2 - does it really need an explanation?

2. Kid Icarus - all but confirmed, just give me some details already!

3. Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena - announced when the Darkness came out, but not a word has been heard since. Is the game still alive or D.O.A.?

4. Serious Sam 3 - announced about this time last year, but like Riddick, not a mention since. This is a game tailor-made for this gen. Imagine the sheer number of enemies they could throw on screen!

5. GH:WT and RB2 - Lame lumping them together? N'ah, it's all about the music. Can't wait to get more details and song selections on both. Give me cross game instrument compatibility damnit!

Bonus
6. Pikmin - Come on already Miyamoto, the game is perfect for Wiimote functionality, where is it?

Rock Band 2 - Guitar Hero who?

Dead Rising 2 - Give me online co-op and over 1000 weapons and I'm set :)

Gears of War 2 - Duh....

Halo Wars - Possibly the only good Halo game ever released...like it was supposed to be in the 1990's

Heavy Rain - Nothing since E3 2006 and Indigo Prophecy was awesome.

Oh yeah, what did ever happen with that Chronicles of Riddick game??

It's funny that many people here bag on EA or Nintendo for reusing old characters, or milking franchises, yet what are 99% of people here looking for at E3? Sequels to their favorite characters and franchises.

It's like the Rock Band DLC arguments every week. People excuse sequels or music that they like and bitch about any series they don't like or misses their specific genre of taste.

EA is slightly different in that i think valid complaints can be made over their Madden franchise and the accusations of basically charging for roster updates. Owning the NFL license for several years exacerbates that feeling among fans.

Although i do think some previews of the next Madden have shown them to be advancing the franchise and not just resting on their laurels/IP.

But for the most part i think the first part of my post is the case. If someone likes a series they clamor for a sequel, if they don't like the series they bitch about the company only doing sequels.

Eh... I think it is much simpler than that. It is a whole lot easier to get excited about a franchise you know than an untested IP. There are of course exceptions, see Bioshock, but for the most part the tried and true are where the excitement lay since you know the characters, you know the genre and you know pretty much how the game will play.

Pixy hasn't posted but as someone looking forward to BG&E2 he can't have it both ways. :)

I'm sure he likes sequels too, as long as they're made by Square Enix or have the words "Shiren" or "Dungeon" in them. ;)

I am looking forward to Rock Band 2 news, more details on Little Big Planet, some surprises from Nintendo, Infamous (new open-world game from the makers of Sly Cooper), and further information on Too Human and Fable 2.

1: God of War 3(!)
2: Banjo Nuts & Bolts
3: Little Big Planet
4: Kingdom Hearts 3 :fc:
5: Fable 2
6: Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2

And I'd LOVE any info on another Jak & Daxter game or (even better) another Sly Cooper (but with Sucker Punch working on inFamous, I doubt that's even in the planning stage). I imagine the next R&C game will be in late 2009 as well.

I don't get too worked up over upcoming XBLA games -- since you have no idea when they're coming, it's like getting excited for nothing.

And ANY sign of life on the PSP front would be appreciated. It's like there was this great run of PSP games in early 08 (Patapon, GoW Chains of Olympus, FF VII Crisis Core) and then ..... nothing.

pinata242

Isn't it hard to get excited over new IPs that we don't know exist? Typically all I know about are sequels anyway. It's rare that I'll hear about a big, new exciting IP ahead of time.

And those you do know about are usually infamous for having already been announced at previous E3s or trade shows. Too Human? Little Big Planet? Sadness?

They are also doing I believe 4 hours of coverage between the Nintendo/Sony conferences tomorrow as well as their normal 3 or so hours each day of regular E3 coverage. Sony needs a few big surprises here, or Microsoft will walk away with the best E3 conference. Announcing the next God of War is like saying that there will be a Madden 2010.

I'm really sad that Nintendo didn't knock the cover off the ball. Animal Crossing on the Wii will be cool, but they have so many cool franchises up their sleeves that they don't exploit enough.

Announcing GoW3 is like saying that GoW PSP game had a back cover on its instruction book. Meaning, it was already announced. Showing it or giving info is a different thing. They did show it, but game no new info or timeframe.

Outside of God of War 3, R&C expansion and LBP I'm not too interested in much else from Sony's camp.

I was happy with Sony, but MS had the conference of the show. Nintendo's was a disaster, but I guess their target audience wouldn't be watching E3 or even know what it is. Maybe the worst E3 press conference I have ever sat through.

Sony gave me a lot to look forward to and plenty of reason not to buy a 360 so I'm good there. Though part of me is very tempted to sell the Wii while the value is high and buy a 360 and go with the PS360 for my combo. The PSWii is turning into a disaster.

I have to admit I was impressed with the MAG footage. It looks like fun. Would have been nice to have more than 30 seconds of GoW3. DC Universe I guess is like City of Heroes, but I don't know. Jim Lee's still my favorite comic book artist so it was nice seeing him, even if I couldn't give a crap about DC characters. Ratchet & Clank looks pretty cool, and definitely has a nice price. Hopefully it's got more than 4 hours of content though.

Sony's Video thing seemed pretty cool, but I guess that's similar to what MS already has on the 360. I don't have one, so I don't know. Some of that Gran Turismo TV content looked cool too, but I can't see myself paying for it.

Was this the first mention of the new Greatest Hits collection? I was hoping Uncharted would be in the initial offering, but I guess I'll have to wait for that one.

Sony had the best conference from my perspective, thanks to additional info or announcements for Resistance 2, Ratchet & Clank Future: QFB, DC Universe Online, Infamous and MAG.

Nintendo's "Motion Plus" might be appealing, but I'm going to be pretty annoyed if they cost more than a couple bucks. On top of what came in my Wii box, I've bought 3 Wii Remotes, 2 Nunchuks, 2 classic controllers, 2 Zappers, the balance board and 3 steering wheels (on top of the one that came in the box with Mario Kart). That's what, like $350 in peripherals? Unless they can start churning them out cheap (or even better, free), Nintendo needs to stop adding accessories and focus on coming up with some kick ass games that use what's already out. Other than slight interest in "Motion Plus", the rest of Nintendo's conference had no interest for me.

As for Microsoft, Portal: Still Alive is great news. Footage of Fallout 3 and Fable 2 looked good, but they'll likely be games that take up too much time for me to get into. It's good to have a final date on Gears 2. A Scene It follow-up is nice, but I hope it's either budget-priced or DLC. I won't be paying significant money for new questions to the same game. The new dashboard and avatar crap look horrible. My interest in the Netflix partnership will depend entirely on how it's implemented.

All in all, I was pretty underwhelmed by the info coming out of all of the conferences. A week ago, my 10 most anticipated 2008 games were Gears of War 2, Ghostbusters, Resistance 2, Left 4 Dead, Lego Batman, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, Aliens: Colonial Marines, Infamous, Lord of the Rings: The Conquest and Brutal Legend. Nothing I've seen from E3 has altered that list.

What's this 1:1 technology?

http://blogs.pcworld.com/gameon/archives/007265.html

Plug a little accessory the size of a memory card into the tail of your Wii remote and Nintendo says you can have dramatically better motion control. According to Nintendo's pre-E3 press splash, the Wii MotionPlus attaches to the end of your Wii Remote and, in conjunction with the accelerometer and sensor bar, lets the system keep better track of your arm's position.

How much better? Nintendo claims an astonishing 1:1, arm to screen. That's like a dozen points higher fidelity than the current system, which works great for casual stuff like rhythm and puzzle games where you can sort of slop through the activities, but it's always been kinda touch-and-go with more serious stuff like Zelda and Metroid. You should hear what comes out of my mouth when my system's infrared bar loses the pointer in a game or just plain locks up. It happens fairly often, too.

For those who missed the Nintendo conference, here's a summary: "We're #1 in sales, so unlike the competitors we don't have to do shit. To prove that, we're announcing no new games. And to show just how confident we are we're going to let some old lady who thinks she's "cool" do most of the presentation!"

So sad that Nintendo did this. I was expecting some kind of surprise like a new Zelda game or a Wii Punch Out or even some confirmation of the Kid Icarus game and we only got Animal Crossing and Rock Band for dummies, also known as Wii Music. Don't they understand that we need a damn hard drive so we can purchase more classic games from thr Wii store?

what makes you say that:

I think I bitched about this in another thread, but let me second the whole "Why no Nintendo Hard Drive?" If they don't want to mess with a big online network like Live; fine, I get that. They don't want to appeal to hard, hardcore gamers? Fine, I get that too. They seem to be doing fine without them. But when they're pushing Virtual Console console games every week, AND they've just introduced the WiiWare games...I mean, do they really not get that we're going to need more space? Like I said, if they don't want to mess with other things, that's fine. But this is basically me (and other Wii fans) saying "Hey, Nintendo, I'd like to give you more money for an overpriced peripheal," and Nintendo saying "No, I'm not really interested in money. Hey, watch one of our top execs pretend the Wii remote is a flute!"

I'm a Nintendo fan, and the Wii has given me and my family countless hours of fun. But how can they just ignore what would essentially be free money for them?

Outside of God of War 3, R&C expansion and LBP I'm not too interested in much else from Sony's camp.

Their presentation seemed much better than Nintendo but definitely lacked the 1-2-3 punch of Microsoft's Dash Redesign, Netflix and FFXIII.

Bring on the third parties!

To me Sony didnt really reveal anything really new. Nintendo at least had some suprises, voice chat finally, new motion plus thing looks cool, but was hoping for more announcements on some new bigger games.

Microsoft had the best one this year.

I was also unclear about the DC game. While I'm a big DC fanboy, I couldn't care less about running a generic hero around Gotham City, fighting generic villains and teaming up with other generic heroes.

Why can't they just copy Marvel Ultimate Alliance, stuff it with 50-100 characters, and call it a day? I'd buy that in a heartbeat.

And while I'm bitching, why can't DC get their damn comic book movies figured out? They're owned by a movie company; you'd think they'd have summer and winter blockbusters lined up from now until forever.

I found it interesting this Motion Plus thing got into the show and isn't coming until Spring 09 and yet they skipped over actual games coming this fall.

I only really see this Motion Plus as doing something that the WiiMote should have already been doing at launch. I think most of us had higher expectations for the fidelity of the WiiRemote and these were quickly dashed after messing around with the wonky controls on a few of the Wii games.

Obviously the Motion plus will rectify this and open up the Wii for a whole new genre of motion realistic sports games (the one thing that could actually get me to buy a Wii). However, we have the problems of a high price point of around $80 for a complete Wii controller (assuming $20 for the addon). Admittedly, most Motion Plus games might not use the nunchuk but that still leaves $60 as the price of entry per player.

Also, we will now have a split player base with the majority of Wii owners being Motion Plus-less for at least the near future. So it leaves the question as to what companies will be prepared to seriously develop for this addon in the future. The balance board has been doing OK so far, but there's no doubt that Wii Fit is an absolute phenomenon, and I would wonder if Motion Plus can duplicate that success, even as a Wii Sports pack in.

But from a marketing standpoint the Wii basically couldn't be doing any better than it already is, so it's hard to categorize this as a problem.

Now, if the motion sensor and the resort games package fails, then it's a problem. But I doubt it, based on everything else that's gone on to date with the console.

Anyone else see the story Yahoo's running on their front page that's titled 'Sony leads the gaming console battle'? Then, when you click on it, the headline's 'Sony takes the lead'. Reading the actual story, the author says that he thinks the games shown in Sony's conference left Microsoft's line-up looking 'a little tired'. Like I already posted, I do think Sony had the best showing, but the sensationalist headlines seem way over the top and more than a little biased.

I really don't (and I'm hardly a Sony fanboy). The biggest MS announcement was that FF XIII would be coming to the 360 as well. Hardly a huge boon to MS; more of a blow to Sony. What big exclusive games were introduced? What huge revalations came out besides the Netflix thing? It certainly wasn't a bad showing, but far from a big success either.

Actually, all 3 press conferences weren't that "great" with Nintendo being the worst.

I agree, they all were pretty underwhelming.

Nintendo's was pretty bland, furthering their apparent strategy of making 100 peripherals that only work well with one game. Wii Music was laughably terrible; I still can't believe they closed with it.

Microsoft showed off some shooters, which looked as expected. New dashboard appears to be an improvement over the blade system, but I could take or leave the avatars. Their casual stuff was embarassing, though, especially the camera based game. The XBLA Portal level pack/expansion/whatever was probably my highlight, besides the Resident Evil presenter cutting their demo short because they "ran out of time," after they basically doubled their talk time because they insisted on having the Japanese dev present it and someone translating. FFXIII was a big score for them, but it's not like they gained exclusivity, it's just multiplat now. Everyone gets to play, big deal.

Sony's LittleBig stuff looks interesting, and I don't really care about Home, but a bunch of people I know do. While most seem to be reading it as begging for time, Tretton did make some good points on how long it took some of the biggest hits to come out on previous Sony consoles, and that's when they were the leader. GOW and MAG were nice touches, even if only in CG form.

My biggest surprise was that Sony and MS didn't break out the motion stuff they were rumored to be working on, which is probably a good thing considering the amount of crap casual stuff that would've followed.

Few Wii games even make ideal use of the current controller's capabilities (Wii Sports Tennis, Metroid, Mario Kart are some exceptions). I imagine with the 1:1 add on we'll just see more wasted potential, with less than handful of great games, and a ton of games that would work better with an old fashioned controller. I hope I'm wrong though.
I'm actually excited about Call of Duty 5 using the Zapper, but nothing else Nintendo showed really interested me. I thought MS and Sony were disappointing too, but both were better than Nintendo.

The problem is that it's an online game... as such, if they let you run around as actual DC characters, you'd be stuck as Kamandi or something, as Superman, Batman, etc. would all be taken really early. So it is more like City of Heroes set in the DC universe.

Miyamoto explaining why there were no 'core' gamers:

think that there’s probably one other element to it, and that’s that our view of how we use E3 has changed. For a very long time, E3 was an event where — and certainly Nintendo included — catered specifically to the core gamer. Now we look at more … an opportunity for us to introduce new concepts and new types of play that we intend to bring to the broader audience, particularly because of the media that gathers at E3 now.

So while attending an E3 event like this, they might be given the impression that Nintendo is no longer focusing on the games that appeal to the core gamer, in fact we’re still working on many of those titles, but it’s just not the type of event where we’ll be showcasing that anymore.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25710005/

That makes me feel a little more at ease, Basically Nintendo is only going to show for the most part things like voice chat and Wii drums...rather than the next Zelda or Mario.

Michael Corvin

No shit.

I'm gonna have to go ahead and call bullshit on Miyamoto here.

There is no fucking way that if they had a game the caliber of a Mario or Zelda that they wouldn't show it off at E3 - No. Fucking. Way. I'm sure they're working on such games, but they're just a real long ways off, IOW, they pretty much have nothing for the next year. Further, the fact that they showed Animal Crossing runs contrary to his statement anyways.

But at least this shows that they know they fucked up and will hopefully get their shit in gear and make the types of games that put them on the map in the first place.

I think it was because the Gear of War 2 demo looked more impressive than any Sony exclusive - and it's a sequel to a popular franchise, so it has built-in hype.

And the Netflix thing too.

Overall, disappointing though. The big things I'm looking forward to are GOW 2 for the 360 and GOW 3 for PS3.

Nintendo finally admits E3 was a disappointment
Posted Aug 19th 2008 1:47PM by David Hinkle

During an interview with VGChartz, Nintendo's resident wrist-hurting, Shaun White-introducing marketing lady, Cammie Dunaway, commented that Nintendo's E3 showing was a bit of a disappointment. You don't say?

"I would say the message is we were disappointed with our performance at E3," commented Dunaway. "There were titles like Wario which we think will be really fun titles that we should have show cased." Yes, we'd have to agree. It was certainly the best game we played at the show. But what about this Pikmin 3 business?

"We were excited that Mr. Miyamoto made the commitment that Pikmin is coming," she said. "It would have been nice if we could have said that on stage. But, we think it was a good recognition for us that we care for our core fans, and not just the new people who are now discovering Nintendo."

And the thing is, these things are still in short supply at retail, because the people buying them have no idea what an E3 is and they don't know/care that there is a dearth of games the rest of the year.

I just read Mrs. Dunaways interview in Septemeber's GameInformer and wow, is this woman clueless!

She came off as another typical corporate hire. Her previous experience was with Frito Lay and Yahoo and she comes over to Nintendo and is using her family's experience as a gamer as basis on what report to the people uptairs. When asked about the lack of drive space on the Wii and the effect this has on people purchasing new Virtual console items her response was:

"I hear you, but we don't have storage announcements to make right now. I know at my house, because we buy pretty much everything that's new on Wii Ware every week, what I've found with my own behavior is that we want to play what's new and so we buy what's new. We delete somthing we haven't played in a while, knowing that if we want to go back and we get it we won't have to pay again. So that's the way that a lot of consumers are managing it."

Reporter: But that seems far from ideal, Are there other solutions being looked at?

CD:"It's just not something I'm prepared to comment on"

Three things:

1- Where on earth did Cammie get her MBA? Because I went to business school also, and the first thing they teach you is that you don't use you personal tendencies and taste to base your business decisions.

2- Did anyone knew that you could delete Virtual consoles purchases and download them again later on without having to pay?

3- She is the fucking Vice President of Marketing for Nintendo. Didn't she do any research before that crapfest they gave at E3? Wasn't she supossed to know what was expected of the fans and reporters of E3? Since when is E3 a stage to give financial reports and have an uncharismatic woman babbling about topics she clearly has no knowledge of?

I agree it is far from perfect, but I'm sure most people know you can delete the VC or WiiWare purchases and re-download them for free later.

Maybe it's just me, but I didn't have a problem with that response at all.

The problem is that as marketing director she is seriously uninformed about the gaming industry. So is Reggie. The people at NOA are really just talking heads. They are not "gamers" and putting them onstage was just odd and uncomfortable.

All the real knowledge on/about Nintendo and Wii is in Japan.
