Weekend Box-Office (6/20-6/22) : Get Smart #1, Guru bombs

EXCLUSIVE FANTASY MOGULS EARLY 3-DAY ESTIMATES
1. NEW – Get Smart (Warner Bros) - $40 million, $10,228 PTA, $40 million cume
2. The Incredible Hulk (Universal) - $22.5 million, $6,414 PTA, $97.41 million cume
3. Kung Fu Panda (Dreamworks) — $21.75 million, $5,366 PTA, $155.64 million cume
4. NEW – The Love Guru (Paramount) - $14 million, $4,648 PTA, $14 million cume
5. The Happening (Fox) - $10.25 million, $3,433 PTA, $50.51 million cume
6. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (Paramount) — $8.1 million, $2,554 PTA, $290.52 million cume
7. You Don’t Mess with the Zohan (Sony) — $7.32 million, $2,233 PTA, $84.1 million cume
8. Sex and the City (Warner Bros.) — $6.5 million, $2,662 PTA $132.42 million cume
9. Iron Man (Paramount) — $3.85 million, $2,014 PTA, $304.63 million cume
10. The Strangers (Rogue Releasing) — $2.24 million, $1,420 PTA, $49.87 million cume

Marvel’s The Incredible Hulk (Universal) has posted the no. 2 Friday gross with an estimated $7.25M, but that will translate to only about $22.5M for its second weekend. That is a huge 60% or so drop, and, after 10 days, the re-booted Edward Norton Hulk debut will be at about $97.41M domestic. That would put The Incredible Hulk slightly behind the pace of Ang Lee's version of the big green guy from five years ago.

Kung Fu Panda (Dreamworks/Paramount), in its final pre-Wall-E (Disney) weekend, scored another $6.3M Friday and is headed for an estimated $21.75M 3-day, for a new cume of $155M+. Industry sources are telling me that Panda will likely finish its domestic run with $230M-$240M, which would be a spectacular showing.

M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening (Fox) fell to $3.2M or so on Friday, and the genre pic's second weekend take will likely be an estimated $10.25M. That would represent a 65% drop from last weekend while still rounding out the top 5.

I wished The Incredible Hulk would have dropped a little less, but it's still better than the first one's 69.7% 2nd weekend drop.

It is following Fantastic Four's box office record very closely. FF dropped about 59.5% during weekend 2 and ended with up almost $155 million in the US.

At least the Love Guru bombed: proof that our country's not quite doomed.

All right, where's Chmiel?

...Sorry Hulk isn't doing a bit better, I saw it yesterday and give it a solid "B" -- the ending was a bit too CGI-arriffic for me and I wish Jennifer Connelly was back as Betty Ross. I think the whole picture might've just been too soon for those who saw Ang Lee's Hulk and hated it, though. 8-10 years might have been a better gap than just 5.

Does anyone know how much love guru cost to make? It looks like a 10-20 million budget. With 14 mil. already they should still get at least $30 million total and probably 10 million on DVD. I think they'll make the money back.

Eh... Not so much... Actually dropped 69% on Friday, it could challenge the original Ang Lee film on drop-off:

no question it'll make its money back, but the fact that it didn't open big is something to be let down about.

Re: "The Incredible Hulk"'s 60% - 69% drop. So what? No one expected it to do the business it did it's first weekend out. Why do people think any movie that makes over 50 million it's first weekend to do the same or even slightly less the following? It never happens.

Big Friday drops are common, even Iron Man, which had a 48.1% weekend drop, had a pretty hefty Friday drop (-57.8%).

That means the original Hulk likely had around an 80% drop Friday-to-Friday (it finished the weekend at 69.7% drop off).

Is $40 mill good for Get Smart? Is it better than expectations?

Most real estimates for Get Smart that I saw were around 38-40 million, so it is in really quite in line with estimates.

The Love Guru was expected to make around 22-24 million and of course really came up short.

Still, Love Guru made $14 million mor than it should. I hate to sound so negative, but damn if that movie ever was horrendous.

I too hoped Hulk would be better in his second frame.

Not even like Speed Racer off.

I'm more like, "Wow, what the fuck was I drinking when I posted that?"

Well....

Um....

Shit, I got nothing.

I've never understood this mindset; why should we be let down that a movie didn't open big? We don't have anything invested in it, aside from personal opinion.

I have seen the LOVE GURO trailers at least 3 times and each time the crowd response was laughter like they were going to see this movie. So I'm surprised it bombed.

Then you should really, REALLY, stay away from the BD sales figures thread in HD Talk .

Edit: Quoted the wrong post...

The possibility of sequels I guess. At least we know we'll see Hulk in some capacity in The Avengers. Probably not likely to get another outing on his own though...

I most definitely do, as well as the weekly box office threads. I just don't see why people take that stuff so personally.
