I would think that GTA III would be ahead of IV.

I'm pretty upset that my favorite series, Ratchet & Clank don't even rate a mention.
And the absence of Mario 64, the first 3D platformer is also pretty suspect.

Still, there are some nice, less-than-obvious choices mixed in there. Like the inclusion of Shadows of Colossus as high as they did. And I always appreciate a shout-out for Psychonauts. Would have liked a Beyond Good & Evil mention as well...

There should be a minimum 3-year rule where games released withen the last 3 years are not eligible.

If I recall correctly, AFI will not allow a movie on their list until 5 years after release and for good reason.

Will Super Mario Galaxy hold up in 2 years??? Haven't played it, so I don't know. Same thing for Guitar Hero. Bio Shock was amazing last year. Will it have the same feel in a couple of years? I doubt it. Resident Evil 4 was the best gamecube game ever made. Would it make a top 50 list in a couple more years? Maybe, maybe not.

Without further nit-picking the list, Tetris is still very playable and so is Contra.

Galaxy is simply overrated. A fine game, but I don't understand the praise. Mario 64 is simply a better game!

Galaxy takes everything that was decent in Mario 64 (Controls, characters, style) and gives in what Mario 64 lacked: Fun levels and variety. Mario 64 is overrated, Galaxy is a better game.

(FWIW, I haven't liked Mario 64 since I first played it back in '96, it was repetitive to me then, and still is now.)

My big WTF -- Doom on the PS? Really?

It should have been Guitar Hero II.

But maybe not quite so high.

Typo. The PC version came out in 1993, not the PS version.

To each his own. My biggest gripe with Galaxy is the difficulty-- or lack of difficulty. Don't get me wrong, it's a very fun game, but I simply don't think it's all that special.

RE4 on the other hand is simply delicious.

You know, I'd heard for years how great Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo was. I bought it the moment it hit XBLA, as I love puzzle games. Really, I don't get the love. Maybe it's me, but I don't really understand how to play it or what the fighter really do. To me that game is a big "meh".

Guitar Hero came out of NOWHERE with zero hype and a hefty price tag and yet it revolutionized the music rhythm genre and introduced video games to a segment of the population that had no previous interest in them. Can't say enough for what that game accomplished. Complain if you like about the setlist or the complete lack of original tunes; both are due to the game's low profile. But as far as a gaming revolution, this has to be pretty high up there.

Not a single Sonic game? Really?

And "Super Mario World" over SMB3?

This list is all over the place. Needs Grim Fandango, though, and probably a Sonic game (the second one?).

I'm indifferent to World of Warcraft, but if they're going to place Guitar Hero so high for what I assume is the influential factor, WoW probably needs to be higher.

THPS2 is way too high at 24, and I'm not even sure it should be on the list at all.

This list is in the new issue where they also have lists for other forms of media such as movies. The Shawshank Redemption did not make the top 100, yet Shrek, Napoleon Dynamite, Dirty Dancing, and Pretty Woman made it. Seriously.

Wasn't it GHII that came out of nowhere that revolutionized the music rhythm genre and took the world by storm?

As for other current games on the list, Bioshock should be higher. Galaxy is definitely worthy of inclusion and is far superior to Mario 64. Gears of War is way too high.

I don't know, I saw GH1 displays at Wal-mart, Best Buy, Fry's, Gamestop, pretty much everywhere, always with big crowds around them. The game was pretty popular and created the market for plastic guitars.

Here's what they say about Guitar Hero - "A plastic guitar and a simple interface upended the music-game catagory - and let any half-talented couch potato channel his or her inner Eddie Van Halen".

And as far as Super Mario World - "The game that came free with the SNES console is also the gold-standard side scroller in which a plucky little plumber first took flight".
