PS3 upconversion quality?
I have a quick question about the pic quality of a std DVD played through PS3. I just connected it through the HDMI input of my Pioneer 5080. I popped in a std disk and notice that the quality can be grainy or not as precise as I would expect. Not always, but notice lack of definition sometimes in faces, a little blurred. Did I set something up wrong, or will all std movies play this way? Any suggestions to correct?
thanks

I haven't tried it myself, but have read in a couple of Home Theater magazines that this is the biggest downside of using a PS3 for watching SD movies: the upconversion isn't very good.

The PS3's upconversion is on par with what the best standalone upconverting DVD players offer if not better. The only way you'd get better upconversion (i.e. notice the difference) is if you used an HD player like the Toshiba HD-XA2 (Reon chip).
I use my PS3 for Blu-ray only. For SD DVD, I use my Oppo without upconversion. I let the Reon in my Integra DTC 9.8 handle that.
