Since the mods have closed the old Big Lots Update thread, I thought I'd start the new thread with a Master List of titles seen at Big Lots which I've been working on.
It's by no means complete - the old thread had gotten so long and unwieldy that I haven't had time to go back through all the posts yet so this will be a work in progress. I'll add titles as I have time and as you post new ones.
* Titles which have been seen at Big Lots in the last 4-5 months are listed in bold type.
* Older titles which have not been posted in a while (but may still be lurking around) are in standard type.
* MGM Midnite Movies are in dark red type.
* MGM Western Legends are in dark green type.
* MGM World Films are in purple type.
You'll also find some titles in standard type which are listed just for archival reference, such as the 2-disc Warner titles - which haven't been seen since December 2007 (and even then weren't seen nationwide).

Thanks for the additional titles everybody - keep them coming. And thanks too, for identifying the studio (which is a big help in helping me to update the list).
I realize that the list as it stands is far from complete.
We've seen such a flood of DVDs at Big Lots in the past few months (and so many pages of posts of new finds on the old thread) that I felt that a master list of titles (like the old Sony/Columbia Tri-Star list originally posted by Ken Cline) would be helpful to all of us.
Ken's list was a useful checklist to me - both to keep up with what I was buying and to know what to still be on the lookout for - and also to use to look up unfamiliar titles for reviews here at DVDTalk, Internet Movie Database, and elsewhere to see if the DVD was worth picking up.
I hadn't intended to post my list until I'd done a lot more work on it but when I saw that the mods had closed the old Big Lots thread today, I figured there couldn't be a better time to go ahead with it, since the list will always be here at the start of this thread where everyone can find it.
My goal is to eventually work through the old Big Lots thread back to April 2007 when the last updates to Ken's Sony list appeared, and list all subsequent Sony titles posted, and also include other studios such as MGM and HBO.
I don't see any need to go further back than that as Ken's list of the older titles is readily available in the old thread.
There may be some unadvoidable overlapping - I know that Ken had listed a number of potential OOP titles which hadn't appeared in Big Lots at the time but have shown up in recent months.
Here is some I have picked up, that I didn't see on the list.
HBO's Hitckhiker Vol 2 and 3 (rare to find)
The Changeling
Sony
Pulse (1980's horror flick)
A river runs through it (SE with booklet)

Visited the BL by my house today. Seems they did get an influx of the HBO titles, but they were stocked into the Columbia/Tri-Star stacks so one had to dig through the haystack all over again.
But I lucked out, and found a title I really wanted to acquire:
American Splendor
I think I got the only one in the store. Also picked up:

I personally like Gattaca. I has a great cast, a good story, and a decent ending. I own the superbit version of it already, but haven't watched it lately so can't state as to the quality of the transfer. But for $3, you'll get your money's worth for sure...
As for Ethan's best film, I'd have to say Training Day. Awesome movie, and he was excellent in it... But yes, I agree that he is underrated...

I've worked back some more through the old Big Lots thread and have added a good many titles to the Master List (especially MGM titles).
I've also rearranged the list a little (studios are now in alphabetical order, studio names are in bold type).
Someone suggested adding anime titles at Big Lots to the list. Would it be best to do so here or start another thread for anime?
Very nice thread.
For a suggestion: maybe add some formatting to have old titles (that haven't been seen in a while) in a lighter color. Especially since these lists change a lot. I've seen this done at CAG and it helps me.
Good suggestion. Once I go back further through the old thread, I'll probably do this with the titles I add.
But right now, with just a few exceptions (mainly a couple of older Sony titles I haven't seen in a long time which you guys had asked me to add - A Man Called Sledge comes to mind), the titles in the current list have been reported as being seen at Big Lots within just the last two months (an amazing amount of DVDs!).
Very complete lists. All I can think to add is Heroes: S1 that very few people found (And subsequently put in the toilet).
On that subject, all I'll say is that I think it's best to limit the list to widely seen and reported titles which people might have a reasonable expectation of finding. -wink-
I know that someone else also reported finding a used, resealed set of Heroes at Big Lots (for $4.00, I believe), and there have been other used titles reported as well, but I see no point in including previously viewed titles in the list.

Just wandered back to my Big Lots today and the top two tiers of the big Columbia/Tri-star display had been taken off and In Cold Blood had been hidden. Very happy, been looking for that one for some time.

Possible correction: The Bride is a WS-only title. (The Deep, which is not on the list, has flipper and FS versions. I've only seen the latter at BL.)

My Big Lots finds today: (All MGM Titles)
Two Big Lots stores put out fresh MGM displays today. I'm sure the previous thread lists most of the titles but I wrote down at least a hundred titles. I'll post the list once I'm done crying about the new dent in my wallet.

Of our 3 BL's, one gets their truck on Wednesday, earlier then the other 2. Went in their today. New titles were several sets of Tango label collections with 8 5-15 year old b-films on 2 dvd's for $5 per set, & a bunch of hispanic titles on Pegasus for $4.
IOW, dollar store junk.

Yeah, huge new MGM display at Big Lots today. A real cardboard display unit, like something you'd see in a regular retail store, 3 sides, about 6 feet tall. Many many new titles not seen before. About 3-4 of each title, I guess they had about 150 unique ones. I picked up about 40 myself!
Titles I can remember:
21 Hours At Munich
American Buffalo
Bad Influence
The Ballad Of Jack& Rose
Be Cool (WS)
Be Cool (FS)
Best Seller
Boxcar Bertha
Bowling For Columbine
The Brood
Bubba Ho-Tep (CE)

Just checked my Big Lots and they had the other five in the new versions but Strikes Again was only available in the old version so I didn't pick that one up. I may have to buy the Pink Panther, Strikes Again and Return of in the Deep Discount sale to complete the collection.
I also picked up the two Errol Morris films (too bad they didn't have Thin Blue Line, but I guess that might be asking for too much) and Paths of Glory.

Question.
Did anybody who picked up "The Yes Men" and or "The Ballad Of Jack & Rose" come with inserts?
One other question; it would be nice. But probably unlikely. But... did anybody out there find a copy of "Planet Of The Vampries", a Midnite Movies release. Probably not.
Oh yeah. "Bowling For Columbine" is available in two version. The single and two disc sets. I saw an even number of each at my mine (San Bernardino, CA). The packaging gives no indication, give the case a shake.

I have never seen Gattaca is it any good?
I love Uma and I always thought Ethan Hawke as very underrated actor (What's is his best flim?).

Unfortunately, I was unable to find a copy of it today at my local Big Lots.

Amazing selection of titles, I picked up 26... and could have purchased 10-15 more, easily. I missed the original Rollerball, or I would have snagged that one. The SecondSpin.com, Deep Discount, and the big lots recent waves have added at least 70+ titles to my library, with an average price of maybe $4.50, possibly lower.
I would like to get a Gattaca and Cliffhanger Suberbit... if anyone sees a copy. More than willing to pay total costs plus a couple of bucks for someone's trouble. Looks like my local Big Lots is empty of Columbia/Sony restocks.

The 2-disc is the Special Edition, which is labeled on the spine, front cover and security sticker. Gresham, OR Big Lots has a huge display, that's horribly put together.
One fourth of it is against a wall, so a bunch of titles are inaccessible. The rest is stacked so deep that you have to make a mess to go through it.
I ended up getting Guys and Dolls: DE and Bubba Ho-Tep

BIG display in my local BL. I concur with the deep stacking, I had to pull lots of titles out to see what lurked behind them. I got my hopes up when someone mentioned Nobody's Fool, much to my consternation I failed to realize that it was NOT the 1994 Paul Newman version! OOPS. Anyhow, these were my buys:
Bubba Ho-Tep
Guys and Dolls deluxe
8 Heads in a Duffle Bag
Custer of the West

Killer Klowns from Outer Space
Slaughter's Big Ripoff

just got back from my BL in Durham,NC. This thread didn't do these displays justice. Tons of stuff. some real gems here - especially the midnite movies. But a couple of real stinkers too (Magic Sword, Konga, Steamboy, etc.). yeesh - MS3K territory if you ask me. But there is enough stuff here for everybody.
Some others I remember
Candyman 3
Lots of classic WB westerns (good stuff, not public domain)
My mind reels. : ) there we two huge displays...
I had to contain myself.. only got 5.. trying to cut down.
btw - I have had very good experience of getting my $3 back by selling these to FYEs. Sometimes they won't take them at all, but when they do I tend to get $2 to $3 for them - that's pretty incredible from my perspective... You won't make any money on these, but you may get your money back for some of them - which is essentially a free rental for those!

Found the new MGM display at the Big Lots by my house, and I went through and inventoried it. Or at least I thought I had until I read Boba Fett's post about it being pushed against a wall. My store had it pushed against an endcap, so I guess I missed the hidden side.
Anyway, I came up with 212 titles. I went back to the first MGM post of 6/19 and deleted all the ones from my list that have been already mentioned. Here's the remaining titles I didn't see mentioned:
The Black Stallion
Candyman 2
FX2
Heavy Traffic
Killing Me Softly
No Man's Land
Personal Velocity
Phantom of the Opera (1989)
Recipe for Disaster
Straight Out of Brooklyn
White Knights
Wicker Park
I was bowled over by the massive amount of great titles in this new lot. Frankly, I couldn't afford all the ones I picked, so for the time being settled for:
Clean Slate
The Ghoul (Boris Karloff - some praised this 1933 film on the Classic Horror Film Board (http://monsterkidclassichorrorforum.yuku.com/topic/1124/t/The-Ghoul-1933.html) )
The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane
Making Mr. Right (great Susan Seidelman comedy featuring John Malkovich)
The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (awesome big-budget production from Billy Wilder)
Rollerball (1975)
Scanners
The Valeyard

Here's my haul for the day. Pardon my not removing titles already seen in other posts but I just finished entering them in my Spot database and I'm pooped. It's mostly from the new MGM dump.
These came from the store on Sepulveda in the San Fernando Valley (L.A.). They had a few of the 4-sided displays, which aren't too deep but have to be moved to get at everything, and they also had two of the wider, really deep displays. The whole thing had to have been only a day or two old because I had to (or should I say, "got the honor of") remove the bubble wrap on the hidden sides that they use to keep the DVDs in place during shipment.

LOL - I know how you feel, though - I have a handful of titles that I've refused to buy anywhere else for months because I saw them once at Big Lots. Joyeux Noel is like my Holy Grail of Big Lots titles. I saw it at a Big Lots somewhere east of L.A. last fall and didn't get it 'cause I thought I already owned it and have never seen it since. I work at one of the studios and could pick it up at the store on the lot for seven bucks but I refuse to do so because I saw it at Big Lots for three.

I hit the Big Lots in Glendora, CA last night and walked away with:
A Bucket of Blood
Swamp Thing
F/X
Art School Confidential
Thunderbird 6
Bubba Ho-Tep
The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes
The Rage: Carrie 2
Carrie (TV Movie)
The Ghoul
No Guys & Dolls or The other Thunderbird movie (Damn!). I also hit the Big Lots in Covina and they had a few of the MGM titles on a side shelf but no where near the amount I found in Glendora.
No MGM Titles in the West Covina or La Puente stores.

Wow - what a lot of new titles.
I've updated the master list on Page One with all of the MGM DVDs recently posted.
I assumed that Posse is the 1993 Mario Van Peebles movie and have marked it as such.
Is No Man's Land the 1987 Charlie Sheen action flick or the 2001 Bosnian war movie? Both are MGM releases.
Another question: would it be better to keep the updated Master List at the beginning of this thread or bring it forward to the newer pages as major updates are made?
I initially thought placing it at the beginning would be the best place, where everyone would know to look - but it may become out of sight, out of mind there as the thread grows.
I grabbed some titles at BL District Heights, MD yesterday:
HBO Titles :
Baghdad ER
Live from Baghdad
Naked World
The Comeback (Lisa Kudrow)
John Paul II
Bill Maher : Victory Begins at Home
Empire Falls
MGM Titles (Yes, they got two 4-side stacking rack inside the store, most titles 2-3 copies )
Salvador
Guys & Dolls DE (I grab the last one)
Bowling for Columbine
Johnny Mnemonic(2-3 copies) & Closer (1 copy) are the only Superbit titles that left from the last stock.
I spotted some titles still more than 1 copy: Bubba Ho Tep (Limited CE), Empire Falls, La Cage Aux Folles II, The Journalist & Jihadi.
HBO titles that I saw but I didn't take : Taxicab Confessions, Norma Jean & Maryln, Capturing the Friedmans (each 1 copy left).

Here is an update of the Master List which I've been working on of the DVD titles seen at Big Lots (updated through 06/22/08).
It's still by no means complete. I'll add titles as I have time to go through the old Big Lots thread and as you post new ones.
Since there have been a fairly significant number of titles added since this list was first posted on 06/13/08 (especially MGM titles), I thought I'd bump the list ahead for those who are viewing the latest posts.
I'll continue to update the list in the first post of this thread (always remember to check that first post for updates).

It's definitely not the Bosnian film. I would have bought it if it was.
But I don't recall seeing Charlie Sheen either.

Man, that was a huge display with a ton of titles! I had to put a few back...
But I bought (from a Vista, CA store):
The Kentuckian
Hell in the Pacific
Duel in the Sun
Foxy Brown
Too Late the Hero
Beachhead
I'd love to see a few titles show up at B/L - Coffy (the premise intrigues me - and I love Pam Grier), The Unforgiven (Burt Lancaster), and I'm still hoping for Runaway with Tom Selleck, Gene Simmons, and Kirstie Alley.

Yep, looks like pretty early Charlie Sheen at that. I picked that one up on a blind buy just because I've come to appreciate him a lot more because of Spin City and Two and a Half Men.

Is the title correct on this one: "I Was a Brady"? I couldn't find it in IMDB under that title.
I know that there were a lot more Paramount titles which came in to Big Lots at the time which could be listed, but I haven't gotten that far back in the old thread yet.
If anyone else can think of any, I'll be glad to add them.

My bad. It's actually called "Growing Up Brady." I was too lazy to look at my DVD cabinet when I wrote that post.

Keep it in the first post, and link to it like you did here when updates are made. A first post should always be kept up to date and will never be out of sight, out of mind. Managing the list in two or more separate posts would be a hassle and is really unnecessary.
Thanks for the list! :)

Has anyone noticed there are actually 2, possibly 3 different MGM assortments?
UPC#550014447 DVD MGM 832 PIECE DISPLAY
This was the HUGE display they had at the Nashua store (sounds about right that it had 832 pieces in it)
UPC#550014449 DVD MGM 256 PIECE DISPLAY
These were small tower displays in the Derry store (probably holds 256)
I think these were also in the Methuen store, but I didn't buy anything, so I can't remember the exact UPC's. They also didn't have the display set up, the new assortment was crammed into what was left of the prior Sony bin and their regular media rack.
Seems titles can appear in either or both assortments, not sure if there's an assortment # in the middle 550014448 too? Or any real rhyme or reason as to the assortments we get...and what's in them.

When these MGM titles first started showing up in April, my receipts read: UPC#550014259 MGM DVD VIDEO WAVE 1.
Since that actually was the first wave (of what is now a flood), maybe there is some rhyme or reason or planning as to how the shipments are sent out.

Thanks. This sounds like the most sensible way to manage the list.
I wanted to get some input because I remembered that Ken Cline had bumped his updated Big Lots list forward several times on the old Big Lots thread (but that was probably necessary because it wasn't the first post on that thread).

It seems like there are only 1 of each HBO title at my store and several of each Sony title. If anyone is interested I have posted a thread in the DVD exchange forum as I have a few $3 Big Lots finds I would like to trade for other Big Lots titles.

So far, haven't seen the MGM shippers yet around the St. Louis, MO area, I've mostly seen the Sony reshipment/shipper (this being at the Alton, IL, as that one was picked through; and they don't put the shipper out at Mid-Rivers). Granite City, IL had NOTHING, as did South County. Also with the above stores, the HBO titles have been just devastated and picked through.

First off, thanks for the hard work in listing all the titles.
Went to the BL in Highland Park, CA last night.
There were four huge double sided racks full of all MGM stuff.
I tried to control myself, but found it impossible.
I picked up:
The Brood
Burnt Offerings
X:The Man with X-Ray Eyes
Scanners
Frogs
Dunwich Horror
Salvador CE
Swamp Thing
CQ
Foxy Brown
Slaughters Big Rip Off
Thunderbirds are Go
Thunderbirds 6
Amityville 2: The Possession
Bubba Ho Tep CE (I already own the dvd. Bought it for $22 a few years ago. I found it so sickening that this title was on sale for $3, that I bought the last two copies to give as gifts)
Went back again and grabbed:
Howling 2
Thrashin
Beat Street
What can I say? I'm a sucker for $3 dvds!

At First Sight
Hope and Glory (non-anamorphic)

^They should be, yes. The MGM assortments should be coming in their own displays, but in the case of the Methuen, MA store, the MGM dvds were not in the displays I've seen at other stores, they had them mixed in with the existing Sony stuff which was in the Sony cardboard bin and also mixed in with their regular media rack.

Went back to Nashua store this week, and they had another 832 piece display set up next to the other one that was there last week. They told me they had both of them last week, but didn't have the space for them. This week they moved both MGM displays and the Sony/HBO bin to the right of the registers, and they still have the existing media rack with other stuff in it's normal place. Holy crap, DVDs are everywhere! :D
From the newly opened display, I managed to get the two titles that were floaters in the old display: Hotel & The Fugitive Kind (all the floaters were still in the old bin too).
Also picked up some other stuff I didn't get the first time, but nothing that's not already in the list. I have to go back tomorrow to get a couple more I decided I wanted in the meantime too. It's madness, Big Lots is killing me right now, I've never had such a stack of unopened and/or unwatched before. -eek-

Solty Rei vol. 1
Samurai 7 vol. 1, and either 3 or 5 (don't remember which)
Baki the Grappler vol. 9,12
Galaxy Railways vol. 3, and either 1 or 5 (don't remember which)
Here's what I picked up today:

Killer Klowns from Outer Space
Thunderbird 6
Konga

Funimation titles? Crap, I just traded for Samurai 7 last week, would've rather had them new, do you know if they were the regular versions or the Viridian Collection. I'd like to get a copy of Vol.3 to replace the one I have with slightly torn artwork. I am also still looking for Wolf's Rain 3 if Bandai titles start popping up again.

Went to my local store today no MGM titles. I did find a 8 movie set from Tango Entertainment that had:
Getting Gotti (Lorraine Bracco TV movie?)
Carolina Skeletons (Lou Gossett)
On the Streets of LA (Lou Gossett)
Cracker First Love (Robert Pastorelli)
I know nothing of these movies but what caught my eye:
The Wild Geese (Burton, Moore, Harris)
Zulu Dawn (Burt Lancaster, Peter O'Toole)
Virus The Director's Cut (George Kennedy, Glenn Ford, Sonny Chiba)
Baltic Storm (Donald Sutherland, Greta Scacchi)
I bought it for $5.00 but haven't opened it yet, it's a 2 disc set so I don't know if The Wild Geese has the extras or not. Heard bad things about the Zulu Dawn dvd but it's the only disc available if you want it. Any one have this disc or the individual discs of these? This one is called Platinum Collection there were 3 others the Drama Collection, 4-star Collection and Family Collection. The back of the disc has the original disc artwork.

Reads about the Funimation titles:
Oh joy....more anime, though the only way I'll be picking any of this up is if all the volumes of an entire series show up (I'm still hunting for a few last volumes of series I'm working on from past BL/DG sales). That or I'll wait for Funimation to release a new Viridian Collection set (as they switched to thinpak VC collection sets, starting w/the recently-released Burst Angel VC set).

I've never seen either version, but according to reports, the recalled version was the international cut containing the nudity and the newer release is the US theatrical cut which omits it.
http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/17262/swamp-thing/
Note: This particular release of Swamp Thing contains the original 91-minute, PG-rated, theatrical version of the film. An earlier DVD release included extra footage of a topless Ms. Barbeau and a few jigglin' dancer-girls, but those frames are not present on this DVD. Sorry, boobie fans!

Bought today in Clifton NJ Big Lots:
The Pink Panther Strikes Again (original packaging)
Curse Of The Pink Panther
Son Of The Pink Panther
A Shot In The Dark
The Safety Of Objects
Ned Kelly (Jagger)
Yep - all @ $3.00. Wish I could've found the Trail & Revenge Pink Panther flicks, but they didn't have. They also had no HBO's or Superbits.
They did have a bunch of MGM's tho. Just a few others I recall were:

Supernova

Captain John Smith And Pocahontas
Married To The Mob
Phantom Of The Opera (1989)
Pieces Of April
Carbon Copy
Falcon And The Snowman
Undertow
Chato's Land

To check/confirm tech specs, sites like DVD-Basen (http://www.dvd-basen.dk/uk/home.php3?search=ned+kelly&mvis=ok®ion=1&land=%25&ok=go) and/or DVDCompare (http://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/film.php?fid=5730) will usually have what one is looking for. If not, look for additional reviews on IMDb's external reviews section for the desired title or look it up on MRQE.com (http://www.mrqe.com/).
For Ned Kelly specifically, it is non-anamorphic (as are a decent number of these MGM titles as they were often one of the weaker major studios when it came to anamorphic releases and/or quality transfers).

I second that notion. I actually acquired it before this BL sale because of a notion to complete my Pink Panther collection. To my delight I found this entry extremely funny. Alan Arkin doesn't attempt to imitate Sellers, but offers his own interpretation of the Clouseau character to great success.
It's payday for me, so I returned to my local Big Lots to find someone had plundered my hidden stash! I had a good chuckle over that, and was glad to find the interloper had left a few of my gems behind. Also, I was able to find some of the missing titles back in the main display (but no more Foxy Brown, goldurnit!)
So this round I picked up:
The Adventures of Mark Twain - inspired to pick this up as it has gained a reputation as a psychotronic film, with many clips on YouTube:

Konga
Kotch - in the Jack Lemmon/Walter Matthau team-up genre as Lemmon directed
The Dunwich Horror
Roadie
Breaking In - distinctive as the 1st movie where Burt Reynolds sports his true-life baldness (although you wouldn't know from the cover)
Needful Things
Thunderbird 6 - (hope I can track down the other one eventually)
The Fall of the House of Usher - 1 of the top 5 films of 1960!
Custer of the West - this is the long version (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0062844/alternateversions)
Jack the Giant Killer - sort of an unofficial sequel (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056112/trivia) to The 7th Voyage of Sinbad - the back cover reads "Original theatrical presentation has been modified for DVD release" - the 1.66:1 aspect ratio is correct, I wonder if they mean this is the original release and not the recut "musical" version?
Suppose They Gave a War and Nobody Came?
X: The Man with The X-Ray Eyes
Guys and Dolls (Deluxe Edition) - I squeezed my hand into the hidden side against the endcap and found it!
Update: This DVD Talk review (http://www.dvdtalk.com/dvdsavant/s1263jack.html) from 2004 explains the modified transfer of Jack the Giant Killer.

If it's Adrian Barbeau (SP?) you could prolly find some more "revealing" films of her besides Swampy ;)
I'm a big fan, and have never seen a better shot of her than the Unrated Swamp Thing. I think it is definitely worth it. I paid $60 for it on ebay, and was extremely pleased. I've only seen the new release @ my BL though.

They have two versions of these available:
Invasion Of The Body Snatchers ('78) (new and old cover art)
Really?! I only saw the the old (non-animorphic) release. I'll have to look closer next time I'm there. Thanks for the heads up.

If that's the only reason you got it... aren't there screencaps on the interweb? $60 bucks to wank off to a 63 year woman seems a bit much.

Don't bother, they are both non-anamorphic, but they did change the cover art a while back before releasing the new 2-disc SE (that's anamorphic and the one you'll likely want), but it's not at BL.
BL has both of these old non-anamorphic covers:

She wasn't 63 when it was shot! And screencaps aren't the same as motion. And yeah, I really don't care for the movie, so the scene was the only reason I picked it up. If blu-ray has the scene, I'll buy it again... This has gone to a place I guess it should never have...

I have a question on the current MGM Big Lots batch: I've noticed that at least 3 of the films (Guys & Dolls, one of the other Brandos & Konga) are released on dvd jointly by Sony & MGM. These are 2 completely separate companies; Sony is Sony/BMG, & MGM is owned by Turner/TCM/Warner. Anyone know why both companies names are on these dvd's?

Trail Of The Pink Panther
Revenge Of The Pink Panther
Masquerade
Burnt Offerings
Bookies
Deuces Wild
Stormy Monday
Of the three NJ Big Lots I visited:
Clifton: Small MGM display. A few remaining Sony stragglers. No HBO.
Springfield: Large MGM display. A few remaining Sony stragglers. No HBO.
S. Plainfield: Small MGM display. Small Sony display. No HBO.
Springfield had, by far, the largest MGM assortment.
Only S. Plainfleid had Sony Superbits (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon + Vertical Limit) I was hoping to find more of those...especially the "Closer" that some said they spotted...but no dice.

Went to a Big Lots in Sacramento, CA (Stockton Blvd.) looking for "The Wild Geese"
If you can't find it at Big Lots, The Wild Geese (30th Anniversary Edition) is also available at Dollar General stores for $3.00 (marked "2 for $6").
Though the packaging mentions nothing about the aspect ratio, it is widescreen (but non-anamorphic).
But it does contain loads of special features, including a Roger Moore audio commentary, which make it well worth picking up for $3.00:
Features:
Last Of The Gentleman Producers Documentary
Stars War: The Making Of The Wild Geese
Wilde Geese Audio Commentary with Sir Roger Moore
Star-Studded Charity Premiere Newsreel
Original Radio Spots
Star Biographies
Stills Gallery
Original Theatrical Trailers
Also at Dollar General, at all of our local stores, they're running a half-price clearance on a few DVDs (and VHS tapes) they've had for a while.
Nothing really exciting but I remember seeing: Bill Engvall redneck comedy DVDs; hunting DVDs; TV Guide Presents Master Crime Solvers - Featuring: Dragnet, Dick Tracy, Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Adventures of Ellery Queen, Sherlock Holmes,Gang Busters, Mr and Mrs North,Dick Tracy, Man With a Camera, etc. (a 4-DVD boxed set for $5.00).
Also saw three versions of "Scene It?: The DVD Game" for $2.50 each: the 007 Edition (James Bond); the HBO TV series edition; and the Turner Classic Movies edition.
The sale items were not in the usual small Dollar General electronics area but are in a special half-price row.
got my hands on a new MGM display finally and found just about every title I was interested in. I spent about 90 bucks
some of the better ones I got were:
Guys and Dolls SE
Bubba Ho Tep
Swamp Thing
Scanners
Rollerball (70s)
Thrashin
Killer klowns from outerspace
Breaker Breaker
Slaughters Big Rip off
Foxy Brown
CQ

Well, at $4 I might be a bit more choosy about what I get ;). My BL should decrease the price on some of them to get them off the overcrowded rack (as they should with much of their overstuffed sections).

Not too surprising. I've noticed the prices on a lot of the other stuff I buy there, like chips & some other canned goods, has increased 20-30% recently. Probably because of gas prices. $4 is still dirt cheap, seeing as how I paid a lot more for many of these titles.
And still cheaper than a full-priced rental!

Most likely anything you see on oldies.com in the MGM clearance section will end up at Big Lots. I see a trend between the two which leads to me conclude that both have the same wholesaler or buy the same stock. Some of the titles like Burn and Straw Dogs are full screen instead of widescreen. You will probably see lots of soul cinema stock. I hope that Blue Velevet is one of those dvds that possibly comes if another MGM restock happens. Blue Velvet would be worth paying the extra $1 for.
Does anybody here think the columbia-tristar well has run dry at Big Lots? What other titles could they possibly liquidate?

Yes, that would be my breaking point between buying almost anything that interests me and buying only those things I know I want.
It would probably decrease my buying by 75%-85%.
Maybe it's just psychological. I guess there seems to be enough 3.99 sales at BB,CC that I doubt I would have ever picked up a copy of Art School Confidential (which I bought and think is well worth 4-5) for 4.00 or ever really considered it.

Yes, that would be my breaking point between buying almost anything that interests me and buying only those things I know I want.
Same here. Back when they were $2 I would pick up most anything that looked mildly interesting and/or based on a cast member. At $3 that decreased to being even more selective within those parameters. If $4, I'd barely buy a couple/few a month and even that would depend entirely on how noteworthy a title was, how likely it could be found at a comparable price in the past and future, potential of a Blu-ray release, quality of its transfer, etc.
Given how few of the $4 titles that were from studios like Paramount were often cited in this thread, how long they remained on the Big Lots shelves if sold at all, I'd imagine $4 is above the price point for most people on the vast majority of these titles.
For example, at $2 I might have bought 50+ of the last MGM wave of titles over the course of a month or two. At $3, maybe 15-20. At $4, maybe if I'm driving near one anyway and have a moment to stop in and they have something especially noteworthy, I'll grab a couple here and there tops.
Even at $3 now, knowing that each month or so is another shipment of titles studio by studio (still plenty to go from Sony, CTHE, MGM.. with potentials from Fox, more HBO to come, if others follow suit), the ability to buy more and more takes a toll (not even including time to view them, space issues..). Push that to $4, I think their overhaul store traffic in relation to those visiting due to the movies and quantity sold will take a large hit (which they and the studios might not care about if solely focused price per unit).
If it wasn't for the $2 movies back a year and a half ago or so, I likely would have never set foot in a Big Lots store as I don't recall even being familiar with it. I'd grab some other things here and there when looking at movies (a wooden bridge and water fountain as gifts, supplies, etc.), suggested them to a couple of friends/family both for movies and larger items as most were like myself in not considering them, etc. That decreased to a degree once they started getting waves of films at $3. At $4, both the DVD buying and randomly stumbling other things would be basically non-existent to the point of afterthought for me.
Far too many choices at $4 all over the place, one can rent them for less than half that with NetFlix, catch on TV, $1 new release rentals at places like RedBox, buy used, etc. With most of these being very minor genre films at best, varying quality, one can always rent them in the future or use it to rent Blu-ray titles..

Half the dvds I bought recently at Big Lots were because of them being 3 bucks.
Most were films I wanted to see, but didn't HAVE to own.
4 bucks would definantly make me more selective.

I don't think the $4 are out yet. The manager told me they had a conference call and they will get another $3 shipment tomorrow but after that the price will be increased I asked how much and he believed $1.
I asked if the change included the Sony titles and he said probably but was not sure.
I wish they didn't change them, I hope the manager was having hallucinations, on drugs, or both. If not, there are probably some DVDS out there at a BL warehouse with the new stickers. Scary. I wonder what they will do with the current $4 titles (kids titles like the Wiggles and Sesame Street)

I agree that it's psychological. Here's what I came home with Wednesday along with some reasoning behind the prices:
Blind buy at $3 because it looked interesting, but would have passed at $4:
Last Valley
Flesh + Blood
Purchased at $3 but would have passed at $4:
Once Bitten
Swamp Thing (can get from CH for $3 w/FC)
Purchased at $3 but would have given it more thought at $4 and probably picked up anyway:
A Bucket of Blood (I have a copy and this is an upgrade, otherwise it would be in the next group)
The Hound of the Baskervilles
Would have purchased at $4 without a second thought:
"X" The Man with the X-Ray Eyes
Die! Monster Die!
The Dunwich Horror
The Fall of the House of Usher
Bubba Ho-Tep
The Great Train Robbery
It's funny how just $1 will make you go from WOW! to meh! This even goes for those $3 MGM and Sony titles. There are quite a few I would purchase for $2 but not for $3. I've gotten to where I don't look at the WM $5 dump rack as often because of the $3 floods at BL.

Revenge of the Pink Panther
Trail of the Pink Panther
Are these dvds the same as the 6 disc box set?

07-05-08, 10:55 AM
^The ones I saw are. They are distinguished by a black keep case with the title lettering in pink and white with an image of "Pink" interacting with the title in some way. All are anamorphic WS with a 5.1 audio track. Unfortunately the 3rd film, "The Return of the Pink Panther", was not a MGM picture so you'll have to find it elsewhere.
While you're at it, get "Inspector Clouseau" w/Alan Arkin too. It's not bad (IMO better than "Trail of the Pink Panther"), especially for $3.

I saw 4 or 5 different "complete" manga sets yesterday from Bandai. I thought I would be able to remember them but now...

Oh yeah. "Bowling For Columbine" is available in two version. The single and two disc sets. I saw an even number of each at my mine (San Bernardino, CA). The packaging gives no indication, give the case a shake
The 2-disc is the Special Edition, which is labeled on the spine, front cover and security sticker. I picked up one today at the Derry store which had 2 slim towers and pretty much the same titles in both, so they were lacking at least half of the titles that I saw at the huge display at the Nashua store.

And now I find out the same apparently holds true for The Sure Thing.
Is Big Lots also carrying the 2-disc SE?
The Sure Thing SE is not a 2-disc, it's a flipper. The film (selectable WS/FS) and commentary are on side 1 and the rest of the features are on side 2.
I don't think it's been found by anyone at BL, I have not seen it, but I have been looking because I was aware of the switch already. I bought the SE right after it came out.

I found one yesterday but didn't get it (was a floater). They only had 1 of it and 5 of the regular one.

Outstanding!
I got my wish. Today I found Midnite Movies - "The Planet Of Vampries". I've been wanting that flick for over a year.
Also saw "The Thing with Two Heads" and "The Monster That Challenged the World", both also Midnite Movies.
And "Starchaser: The Legend of Orin" as well as "Submarine X-1". All still priced at $3.00; San Bernardino, CA.
Question. Is Starchaser or Monster... any good? I barely remember it.

Argh. I just realized that Inspector Clouseau and The Son of the Pink Panther aren't in The Pink Panther Film Collection so I have to go on another Big Lots shopping trip to find them.

Curse is also not in the collection, and available at BL.

Starchaser was originally in 3-D, but of course the DVD isn't. I have a legit VHS tape of it in field-sequential 3-D put out in 1990.

Have any of these new shipments of Big Lots DVD's (MGM, Funimation, etc.) been showing up in Texas yet?
I haven't had any luck at my Big Lots but I know of one I might try out if I get word back that some locations in Texas have been getting them.

Is anyone aware of other MGM (not Columbia Tristar) titles which were similarly downgraded by Sony? Looks like I'll have to spend hours (or days) researching this as I did for the Columbia Tristar debacle.

Store in Pasadena(Tx) on Spencer Hwy/Red Bluff has a small MGM display - which they put up in the last day or 2. Went to one north of I-10 on BW8 East (Galena Park area I think - Wallisville Rd exit) and they have a large (double - 6 sides) display of MGM titles - put out today they said.
Between the 2 stores, I went a little overboard(uurrrpppp! ). Picked up over 60 titles. Out of those being in my collection already, I find that I'll be returning about 10.

Went yesterday and picked-up a few more I initially overlooked and some due to recommendations in this thread:
Inspector Clouseau
Slaughter's Big Rip-off
Code 46
Paths of Glory (Kubrick)
The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes
Unfortunately I never did find those SE versions of Bowling for Columbine or The Sure Thing. Had I known better I probably would have walked out with the right versions since I had first dibs.

The reason I said that was because this (http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/6880/sure-thing-special-edition-the/?___rd=1) DVD Talk review specifically mentioned it as being a 2-disc version. I thought maybe it was the same situation as with "Jeepers Creepers", which started out as a SE flipper and then in later pressings became a double disc SE until finally ending up as the dreaded 'downgraded' version. Whatever the case may be, I didn't get the good version so who gives a damn. ;)

The Pink Panther (1963 Old Version)
This one? http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/images/B0009S4J3C/sr=1-6/qid=1215575907/ref=dp_image_text_0?ie=UTF8&n=130&s=dvd&qid=1215575907&sr=1-6
Hope so, I was hoping it would show up at some point since all the PP films were in the first recent MGM wave. And I'm still holding out for the new version of PP Strikes Again too.

picked up 105 titles.
I know I will keep about 20.
Most glad to get Frogs, Speechless, Konga, some Midnite movies mentioned, Rage: Carrie 2, Young Doctors In Love, Red Square
May return some of the rest. I usually buy anything I might be intrested in and then research them to see if they are keepers. The problem is I usually keep most of them, but I've found some real gems.
These "deals" are killing me!

I would guess they either never got any of those titles or they sold out quickly.
The BL near me only got a *few* of the HBO titles mentioned. While there were 4-5 copies of some titles, others (mainly the season sets) had only 1 copy. The HBO titles were pretty much gone within 3 days.
There are 2-3 copies each of the 2 Superbit titles this store received left on the shelf. They had 15-20 each when they hit the shelves originally.

I consider myself pretty knowledgeable about movies, but I have to admit that this MGM display just about defeated me. The stuff I knew was good, I already owned. After looking at gobs and gobs of titles, I walked out with two. Maybe I'll go back after i do some research. But maybe part of it was the $650 auto repair bill I got right before going to BL. That will put a cold chill in any bargain DVD search...

Ditto, except I didn't buy Howling 2. Some BL's just suck and don't have a good stock of dvds. Titles and stock will vary depending on the area you live in. I'm glad my area rocks. :D
