May US NPD Sales Numbers

Saw Kotaku with the latest numbers....

* Wii - 675,100
* Nintendo DS - 452,600
* PlayStation 3 - 208,700
* Xbox 360 - 186,600
* PSP - 182,300

The Wii is apparently only a few thousand behind the 360 now in total US sales.

Software...

01. Grand Theft Auto IV (Xbox 360) - 871,300
02. Mario Kart Wii (Wii) - 787,400
03. Wii Fit (Wii) - 687,700
04. Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3) - 442,900
05. Wii Play (Wii) - 294,600
06. Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii) - 171,100
07. Iron Man (PS2) - 130,600
08. Guitar Hero III (Wii) - 116,800
09. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness (DS) - 107,000
10. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time (DS) - 102,000

As for Guitar Hero 3 and Rock Band...

"A lot of folks are interested in the battle of the bands," Frazier added. "Year-to-date, Guitar Hero III has sold 2.5 million units compared to Rock Band's 1.3 million which lands them both in the top 10 titles for the year so far."
This month the 360 sales of GTA4 are almost double the PS3. That's closer to a lot of people's predictions of a 2:1 ratio. 360 sales figures didn't improve at all though.

Next month should be a big sales boost for the PS3 with the MGS4 package.

Come on Microsoft, drop the price already!

It's also funny how Iron Man on PS2 snuck in there.

I really don't understand why there was ever a debate about this. The 360 has a 2:1 hardware advantage in the US so why wouldn't GTA sell at a 2:1 ratio on the 360?

Exactly, but the Sony faithful thought GTA would still be held up as a Sony franchise and shoot console sales through the roof which didn't happen. It sold to people that already had the console. I think the same will be true next month when MGS4 numbers roll in.

The PS2 is finally off the list. I just bought my first one last week so it's probably my fault lol.

I'd bet we see Sony finally bring the newest slim model, with the internal power brick, to the U.S at $99 for the holidays.

I liked how the ps2 version of Iron Man outsold the 360/PS3 version.

Not sure how reliable their numbers are, but vgcharz.com has the Wii already passing it up, 12.02 million to 11.66.

That's just because the 360 and PS3 have other new, better games to be playing.

I read on joystiq.com that they just removed PS2 tracking as of this month. It's no longer counted.

I'm not sure how they are counted (only as hardware, or as 1 hardware and 1 software?), but the MGS4 PS3 bundle is going to move a lot of consoles.

Really surprised at GHIII for the WII, its been near the top 10-15 pretty much since from day one, it just keeps on trucking along.

But more than the 250k or so that are sold each month already? I'm guessing a majority of those 250k will just move over to the MGS bundle not increase sales dramatically. I'm going to say PS3 will sell 295k during June.

It's interesting to see the number of Wii games in the top 10 (especially considering Wii Fit is a whopping $90). Also the fact the the top 10 is dominated by the 2 weakest systems of this gen (along with a game for a previous gen console).

I am curious to see if MGS4 will have any impact on PS3 sales. GTAIV (which was predicted to be a huge system seller by many didn't do much for either console). This will be different though, since MGS4 is a PS3 exclusive. But, Corvin makes a good point about the bundle. I'm thinking along the same lines, that people will simply start picking up the 80gb bundle instead the 40gb rather than the game moving a lot of 40gb models. This will show how viable Sony's exclusives are as far as moving systems. We saw the spike that Halo3 caused for the 360. I think GT4 has a better chance at moving units than MGS4 as it has a broader appeal.

It's tough to say. Just from what I've seen among friends, the early announcement of the MGS4 bundle made a lot of them hold off on purchasing a PS3 until it was out. I can't imagine that's true for the overall public, though.

I'd guess the MGS4 bundle will provide a decent boost.

I think a console exclusive is much more important to boosting PS3 sales than a multi console title.

At this point Sony is not only going after people with no next gen console they are pretty much trying to get people that own a 360 to buy a PS3. GTAIV was not going to get anyone to cross over.

At this point, they've got at least two "known" brands as releases: Gran Turismo and MGS4.

And Final Fantasy.

But really, I know it's anecdotal, but the way I'm hearing the 80GB PS3 fly off the shelves, it wouldn't surprise me to see numbers around 300k next month for the PS3. The PS3 still sold well and I think that's with a good amount of people waiting for this bundle knowing it was coming. Now obviously that's something only the gaming public knows and not your average Joe, but I think it'll show up in the charts.

I expect Rock Band on the Wii to blow up next week. There are so many "casual" gamers and families that have Wiis, but no 360 or PS3. I think this game caters to that set very well. I think that's why GH3 does so well and, imo, RB is far more "family friendly".

Analyst foresees PS3 gaining momentum, Xbox 360 price cut at E3
by Donald Melanson, posted Jun 13th 2008 at 5:32PM

Things have been relatively quiet on the Xbox 360 price-cut front as of late, but EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich has now thankfully come through and stirred the pot a bit, saying that he thinks Microsoft is set to make an announcement about a price cut at E3 this July. That, he says, would be in response to the PlayStation 3's steady growth, which he expects to continue to out pace the 360, aided in no small part by exclusive titles like Metal Gear Solid 4. As if that wasn't enough speculation for you, Divnich further goes on to say that if Microsoft does in fact cut the price of the 360, Sony would likely follow suit with a price cut of its own within two months.

From what I have read, the 360 is turning a profit on hardware now and can get away with a possible price cut. Can the PS3?

Yeah. If needed Sony will cut price to stay competitive with the 360. I'm sure they don't want to do it unless forced.

I wasn't paying attention at first and didn't even notice the top 10 software was dominated by Nintendo. Considering that GHIII and Wii Fit are pretty pricey those are very impressive sales.

I think it might be, but for the family/casual gamer, Don't you think they might consider RB/GH III sort of a double dip?

considering the cost, and where the economy is right now.

Maybe. Depends on if those casual gamers have a family of 3+ that could benefit more directly from RB (or GH:WT) than from just GH3.

I do think I read that GH3's guitars won't be compatible on RB for the Wii, which will suck for those people that already have GH3. Even weirder that, at the core, the GH3 guitar is just a Wiimote.

How do you figure? The wiimote just adds rumble and audio.
