Thanks Speedy! The 2 for $30 Blu-ray titles look good.

And as for the Popeye set, forgot it was coming out so soon, I'm excited. Sort of disappointed that there is no tin, like there was for the first set, but ah well.

I suspect that the Popeye Volume 1 they intended to advertise is this new single-disc release coming out on the 17th:

http://www.amazon.com/Popeye-Friends-Vol-1/dp/B001608MF8/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1213052610&sr=1-7

That may be true, but it couldn't hurt to try to get Popeye The Sailor: Volume I (1933 – 1938) at that price. I'm sure it'll work for lots of people. Remember to bring the ad (if it is indeed a mistake).

I'm very excited to try this.

2 Blu-Ray Movies For $30 or 1 For $19.99:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...DCMP=rdr0001488

this sale is live NOW at Best Buy stores. I just went to my local one and bought 4 of these titles - they rang up 2 for $30.

3 for 3. If you aren't willing to buy the lame Jungle Book 2, Sword In The Stone will cost ya $19.99. Pathetic, Di$ney. Looks like I'll have to get it at Wal Mart & have my brother get his employee discount. At least that'll knock $2 off.

And what's worse, is that they JUST put the other edition on moratorium back in January or whatever. So that means people that like the movie or want the version with the most features probably purchased the Golden Collection version before it went away for supposedly seven years or however long they pretend it's gonna be gone, only to find out five months later a better version is going to be released, and what's more, not on sale unless you buy into their shitty cash-in on a good movie sequels. Fuck Disney and these retailers for this one. I'm not buying it until it's fifteen bucks eventually.

That's probably what they meant to do.

However, Popeye the Sailor Volume II is shown with the little Volume I >>>> $9.99 shown underneath. It follows logically that Popeye The Sailor Volume I preceded Volume II.

And nowhere in the text does it state: Popeye & Friends: Volume I.

That should be your arguing point folks

I'm assuming the new release has fewer episodes?

(edit) would it make sense to get both?

I missed out on Vol 1 first time around, and missed the Woody Woodpecker release earlier this year so I'm looking to get these. (but not at $40!)

This new set is different than the Volume 1 release, it's more for the casual viewer, with family friendly fare, and includes shorts from the 60s. From what I read, it doesn't include any of the detailed commentaries, popumentaries, etc.

http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Popeye-And-Friends-Volume-1/9123

I'd say get Vol 1 for $9.99 (hopefully), get Vol 2 for $24.99, then get this if you want. Vol 1 & 2 for $45 is better than what most of us paid for Vol 1 alone last year.

That's the lowest they've been (save for special sales like Black Friday, etc.)

Never seen them at BOGO and they've haven't been on sale (save a season or two here and there) for quite some time.

Define "rebate" here.

If you mean "lower price", can you get a price adjustment?

I just checked out the Best Buy Ad Scan for June 15-21 at Slick Deals and getting the Popeye Volume 1 for 9.99 is going to be tough sledding. The ad shows a picture of Popeye Volume 2 1933-1938 with a $24.99 yellow price sticker on the picture, below the picture are two lines as follows; line 1 "Volume 2, 31 episodes", and below line 1 on line 2 is "Volume 1 . . . $9.99". The implication is that Volume 1 is the same series as Volume 2, but as previous posters have stated, Popeye and Friends Volume 1 is being released that day as well for $9.99. I have already picked up Popeye the Sailor Volume 1 for $54.99 at Best Buy, intending to price adjust it this Sunday, but its going to be a tough adjustment without the picture. My line of argument will be that Popeye the Sailor Volume 2 and Popeye the Sailor Volume 1 are the advertised items and NOT Popeye and FRIENDS Volume 1. We'll see how it all plays out this Sunday. If that doesn't fly, a quick call to 1-800-BEST-BUY for a price adjustment will be my fallback position, as that served me well this past Sunday in getting a $30 gift card for the Ultimate Edition of Troy. I'd welcome any other suggestions for arguing the case for Popeye the Sailor Volume 1 for $9.99 this Sunday.

Popeye Ad Scan:

After comparing the Ad Scan picture and the prices, I figured out what happened, I think.

The picture in the ad scan is for Popeye Vol 1 Tin Version with the $24.99 sticker slapped on it.

Vol. 2 is $24.99 available for pre-order already at Bestbuy.com

On the ad, it states Vol. 1 is $9.99, but the available boxset cover partially matches the picture in the BB ad scan. The box is completely "yellow" versus Popeye's hat & pants are yellow on the Tin. It has the same Popeye picture (w/out Olive Oyl who is on Vol. 2).

And I agree the $9.99 was probably referring to Popeye & Friends Vol. 1 $9.99 Available for Pre-Order (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8801512&st=popeye&lp=4&type=product&cp=1&id=1845419), but the title is not correct and no picture to correspond to it either.

Basically either BB didn't have the Vol. 2 picture available when they were laying out the ad and found an old picture of Vol. 1 tin OR someone made a mistake. AND then added price screwups as well :) Both MAJOR OOPS.

I am interested to see how the whole PM thing will go down on Sunday LOL. I wish everyone success.

I have never relied on the "availability" check for Best Buy, if it said not available. Each time I have found it in stock, sometimes 1 or 2 and sometimes, many. So if you are in the area, just go and look and ask.

That's what the unspoken definition of "Available" is--3 copies or more.

Kind of stupid, lame way to get around possible sales between your checking and your arrival at the store.

However, first store I stopped at--no sign of v1 being present physically :\

I managed to grab a copy last week at full price. Was hoping to find out from here how the whole price adjustment would go before trying myself. May try later today...will post results. *fingers X-ed*

They are far and few in the stores. Had to go to like 6 stores to find last week. One store had 4 copies and the next day disappeared altogether. Another store had 8 where I grabbed one for me and a friend.

Btw, according to a Best Buy associate, if an item is advertised in the paper, you can get a rain check for it at the sale price. I don't know if there's a limit of how long you can use for the raincheck ticket. I do know that Target's rainchecks have an expiration date.

I don't think they pulled Popeye V1 at the corporate level. The first store I went to had 3 copies on the shelf today. I looked all around and finally found them in the Anime section. I can't believe I had a choice of copies! I grabbed the one with the sticker that says: Bonus Inside! Exclusive Reprint of a Vintage 1936 Popeye Adventure Comic Book. While Supplies Last.

Took it up to the register and, of course, it rang up at full price. What a surprise. I calmly pulled the ad out of a bag I was carrying and said it was on sale. Explaining it was Volume 1. Showing the spine and pointing to Volume 1 in the ad. He was satisfied and immediately went about changing the price. He need approval though. The manager comes over and does his thing, barely looking at the product. I was almost out of there when there was sudden interest in what was on sale. I had to point to the ad. The manager wanted me to show him where I found the item in the store. He suspended the sale but said I would definitely get it for that price. I showed him then helped him look up the item in his inventory. Nothing was supposed to be there. I went back and bought the set. I tried to use the 10% coupon but that didn't work on this after the price adjustment. That would've been just insulting.

The numbers from the BB sticker are:

AN
8381235
WHV 1000008614
649042 B

UPC Code:

Thanks to snausages for explaining the process of the mix up. It was a big help in getting the Popeye Volume 1 for the advertised price. I had completely missed that the picture in this weeks ad was for Volume 1 (albeit the Tin collectors edition colored silver) and knowing that helped immensely in getting a price adjustment. When you look at the ad, you automatically think the picture is for the advertised Popeye the Sailor Volume 2, when that is not the case, it is clearly Volume 1 that is pictured.

I picked up Popeye Vol 1 last week as soon as Speedy posted the mistake. I too had problems finding it, but asked a associate there and he walked over to Anime', not the children's or TV section, and pulled the ONE and ONLY copy that was there. That was not a suprise to me, in that this was not a high demand item and I had anticipated having problems finding a copy in our stores in the Bay Area since it has been a while since the release of this edition. That is why I bought it early instead of waiting to see if they had it in stock today. At Best Buy it is wiser to purchase early and price adjust, if you know they screwed up the price ahead of time. You can price adjust up to 30 days after you bought the DVD.

I went to BB this afternoon and then price adjusted it to $9.99 from $54.99 after about 20 minutes of waiting while the manager and company tried to find a way out of this predicament. The closing argument for me, was that the picture clearly showed Popeye the Sailor Volume 1 1933-1938, and Volume 1 was clearly advertised in writing as $9.99. What they intended to sell for $9.99 was Popeye and Friends Vol 1, which comes out on Tuesday (so none were on the shelves today for them to see). Had they tried to argue the intended item, I would have clearly indicated that Popeye the SAILOR Vol 1 was advertised, and not Popeye and FRIENDS Vol 1.

Good Luck all you Forum Members in scoring the deal, and I'll see you Tuesday when I pick up volume II for $24.99, which is a decent price, not a killer, but a decent price as well.

That may be true, but it couldn't hurt to try to get Popeye The Sailor: Volume I (1933 – 1938) at that price. I'm sure it'll work for lots of people. Remember to bring the ad (if it is indeed a mistake).

I am pretty sure, as I had to give the SKU number for the Volume 1 with 4 discs. Of course, you can never be sure until you get it, but I think the Tuesday edition doesn't have a volume number on it.

I would recommend that if you call, you do give them the SKU number so there is no issues about them looking it up for you.

I tried calling the 888 number for Best Buy this morning about Popeye Vol. 1, but I did not have success. I told the customer service rep that I was having difficulty trying to order Popeye the Sailor Vol. 1, and that there was a disparity in the online price and weekly ad.

Unfortunately, the rep clicked on the weekly ad tab, selected the "music and movies" category, and clicked the "movies" link, bringing up all the DVDs on sale. When she said she couldn't find where it listed Volume 1 for $9.99, she clicked on the "Popeye the Sailor: Volume 2" link. Doing so brings up the same image from the Vol. 1 tin, but the correct SKU # for Vol. 2 (8801371).

However, scrolling down it shows "Popeye the Sailor: Volume 1" for $9.99 with SKU # (8801512). But that is the SKU for "Popeye & Friends 1".

I'm going to try again later today, but obviously it all depends on the customer service rep you get and the way you state your case.

Actually, vinyl IS making a comeback. A big one in independent music especially, and Europe from what I've seen.

I'm not sure if your further comments are snarky sarcasm, but, if so, take that! Vinyl IS alive--and is so because analog audio is different from digital! (make the comparisons to things like Laserdisc silly, unless you are just nostalgic for actual laserdiscs...)

it never really went away in indie record stores (though a lot of those have closed over the years). i don't have a turntable, but I like collecting LPs and keeping them sealed. they just look better, especially when they have nice art on the cover.

oh, in europe, bands biggest merch sellers are 7" (45 for you old-times...j/k).

so, to end in a non-threadcrap, i'm picking up Viva La Vida LP today.

Right, vinyl has always been big in europe. And I think vinyl it starting to make a comback into the mainstream world, but for me it never went away. All I buy is vinyl anymore.

The fact that vinyl copies are now starting to get mentioned in ads is a good sign,

By the way...my store still didn't have any copies of Popeye: Volume 1. I'm going to call the CS number tomorrow and see if I can get them to honor the price as well.

You'd think the record companies would be happy to see vinyl make a comeback. It's certainly harder to "rip" music from them other than doing it the old fashion way of real time recording. ;)

Vinyl....oh how I want to be nostalgic about you but even though you offer me more listening headspace I hate your proclivity towards scratching and skipping and your general inconvience as a format.

What's funny is that many of the new vinyl releases are digitally mastered and then transfered to vinyl...kinda defeats the whole purpose aye?

Let's face it, vinyl will and always deserves to be on the audiophile fringe. It's best feature is it's packaging (I'm talking about you Roger Dean.)

What we need now is for the CD to be killed and for new releases to be released on DVD with extremely high sampling rates and dynamic ranges. Also it would be nice if they could find a way to replicate the joy of vinyl packaging for a DVD/CD format. That would truly put the nail in the vinyl coffin.

Sorry for the rant.....

I don’t think vinyl will ever go away completely. It didn’t before, so why would it later. Oh sure, in a few years when all the vinyl hype has died down among the mainstream crowd, there will be talk of that but people like me and friends I know that have bought vinyl for years will continue to.

Even if a record has been recorded in digital it still has to be mastered for a vinyl release and since the audio on vinyl can't be compressed like on cds, records can have a more natural sound. But this isn’t always the case, hell I still buy newer albums that have been recorded in mono.

Even with years of collecting vinyl I have had very little trouble with vinyl record skipping or popping or any of that. Besides if you have to have something that sounds “perfect” you’d just buy the cd any way, if the release did come on cd.

For anyone who cares. I just spoke to Best Buy using their 1-800 number and after about 20 mins of discussion they said they CAN'T match the weekly ad b/c that's a STORE price and that BestBuy online is separate.

Take that for what it's worth.

Got the Coldplay vinyl, and for those curious, it comes packaged with the CD, although the CD is in a plain vanilla sleeve inside the album cover. Still, not a bad price at all.

Oh, and I noticed a price-correction notice pasted on the front door about Popeye at the store I went to.
