Artists whose music you've always put off getting into

I'm going through my first real hardcore Bowie phase finally. I've always listened to him casually and liked his stuff but never really had a period where I totally got immersed in his work. I really feel like I've missed a lot. Alladin Sane and Heroes are albums I'm just in love with now.

Any artists you always put off getting into?

There are a few for me actually. First and foremost is the White Stripes. I always liked their singles but never actually bought an album until just recently.

Same goes for Iced Earth. I always liked what I heard from them but never actually bought an album. Now I find myself collecting their albums as well as Blind Guardian's albums and Demons & Wizards' stuff, which is a combo of the two bands.

Sonic Youth. I fear if I get the wrong one I will hate them and swear the rest off and never hear one I might like.

White Stripes and Sonic Youth for me as well. I picked up the 2-disk Deluxe edition of Dirty earlier this year but it is still wrapped. Maybe someday I'll focus my attention toward these groups.
Also weezer and R.E.M.

Wilco, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Metric are the three bands I've put off even though I keep meaning to get around to them.

Hope you're up for an adventure. I can't count the number of times I've tried to get into Trout Mask Replica to no avail. Dachau Blues Dachau Blues.

Yep, much better idea to start with Safe As Milk.

A perfect way to start with this brilliant band is actually the live CD/DVD that was just released last month (HAARP)..the experience is surreal.

Almost embarrassed to admit, but I only recently started listening to The Clash.

I play their greatest hits CD in my car so often now, that my 5-year old can sing along to "Should I Stay Or Should I Go".

Had no idea how diverse their music was, from the reggae-infused "Bank Robber" to the silly "Hitsville U.K."

Great stuff.

Classic blues.

I know I'd love Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, Robert Johnson, BB King, Howlin' Wolf etc, if I gave them half a chance. Also, I don't quite know where to start, there's some real giants lurking out there...

There was a guy in college, mid 20s and out of the Air Force, that had several crates of blues albums on vinyl. He was quite the blues hound; if he still has his collection I am sure it is worth a small fortune.

I think the description of the Clash as a "political punk band" has made a lot of people think they were one trick ponies like the Sex Pistols (yes I said it... one great album of one type of song)

I remember buying Sandanista when it came out and being amazed at how many different types of songs they did.

Radiohead for me.

A friend burned all their records for me (sans the new one) a few years back, and I just can't seem to get to the point of loading them in my car deck.

Based on other stuff I like I should love these guys, but the clips and bits I've heard haven't drawn me in yet.

Add another one: Steve Earle.

I "got into" a lot of blues when I was in college. A lot of jazz too. It's not my favorite genre but I heard enough that I could at least appreciate a lot of different musicians.

I can relate to a couple of you guys. To the OP, I barely had my Bowie phase a year or two ago, and also felt like I had missed out. Around that time is when I FINALLY started listening to Velvet Underground. Where was I?

A couple of other big ones that come to mind:

Radiohead - Like above poster, I know I SHOULD love them, just can't get into them
Pearl Jam - My best friend is obsessed, never really got the appeal
Sonic Youth - Another one a close friend swears by, but just never got around to it
Weezer - Love a few songs from them, but I remember hating that Buddy Holly song when it first came out
Pavement - I know their importance, but just never took the time
