Philips DVP5986K dvd player question -HELP!-

Okay, i got this upscaling dvd player from philips not too long ago. It's region free and played all my region 3s and region 1s just fine.

but recently, everytime i loaded any dvd thats not region 3, it says its the wrong region and doesnt load the disc.

i read the manual and to fix this, it says put the disc in, then go to set-up and click the un-lock region button. I did that and it still wont load my region 1s.

so now i want to reset this dvd player and to reset, the manual says to go to set-up and click on the prefference menu. but that category isnt even in the set-up tab.

what do i do?

this is kind of urgent (well not life affecting) but we have a movie night at work every friday and its my turn this week and i really want to watch this region 2 movie i have with my co-workers.

Well I am confused.

Your model number when checked against the Phillps support website yields this

Philips DVD Player with HDMI and USB DVP5986K HDMI 1080p DivX Ultra
DVP5986K/98
Other
Question
Can I change the region code?

Answer

Region codes cannot be changed by the end user due to copyright protection laws.

NOTE: Any deliberate changing of the technical specifications of the device will nullify the warranty.
I am not sure how or why you could or think you could change the codes.

i dont have that specific model as i checked philips' website as well. My model doesnt end with /98 or what ever that number is and doesnt look like the model on their site.

and my manual clearly states it can play all the regions (i didnt buy this in america, i bought it in asia - specifically philippines)

and it says to unlock the region codes, just go to set-up and click "unlock". and i have been able to play region 1s and region 3s. and currently now, my dvd player can only play region 3's.

i dont see any preferences tab to mess around with (i say this is a problem because i wanted to reset my player settings to fix the disc locking but the prefernece tab is not in my set-up page)

nope, only Video, Audio, Disc (i think this is what it is), and exit

Those are my options in the set-up page.

Reminds me, the Philips-made Magnavox 460 that was previously remote hackable also later lost the Preferences tab where the hack was applied. So, it's possible that there was an update that eliminated the hack? Presumably, you've already looked under Video, etc.

yeah ive looked at all the tabs and i simply cannot find the preference tab.

i dont think ive even downloaded any updates for my player so i dont see how it can possibly update itself.

is there a fix to this?

I meant an update/change by the mfg. in the production model...basically, no.

I have the older Philips DVP642 model. But it does not play the newer divx/264 codec files (Korean Drama episodes) I d/l. I am thinking about buying the Philips DVP5982 1080p Upscaling DVD Player. Does any one know if this model plays those divx/264 codec files?

Can you still play the region 1 DVDs that you played before,i.e., are you sure they are R1 and not R0?

movies i have played before on my player: American History X Region 2, Munich Region 1, Spirited Away Region 1, Castle in the Sky Region 1.

Those are just some of the few i am 100% sure that have worked on my player before and now my player wont load it.

So anything, aside from region 3s, my player has problems loading.
