So You Think You Can Dance "Season 4" (The 1&O Auditions Thread - Starts 5/22)

I figured we could keep all of the auditions discussion in this thread:

Auditions

Open auditions for this season were expanded to the following six locations:
  • McFarlin Memorial Auditorium at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas
  • Charleston Music Hall in Charleston, South Carolina
  • Capitol Theatre in Salt Lake City, Utah
  • Atlas Performing Arts Center in Washington, D.C.
  • The Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles, California
  • The Milwaukee Theatre in Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Contestants must be between the ages of 18 and 30 and eligible to be legally employed in the United States. A non-competing dance partner may be part of the audition and does not have to conform to the age restriction.

That popper that went last was sick!

He was sooooo entertaining to watch. He blew me away. I'm glad he went straight to Vegas.

... but I think he won't make it past that.

Sex/David is just getting sad. He really has a narcissistic personality and needs psychiatric help. "I've had many many years of formal training from some of the top teachers in the world" I really hope they choose not to show him next year.

I thought that first Asian girl would be awful (especially when they started playing the wrong song and she was just standing there), but was surprised at how good she was (and how much she looked like a man).

He's better off in a show like America Got Talent or something.

It's all the mom's fault. Just look at last year's audition.

His name is Robert Muraine. You can google him and his myspace page comes up. It might be on there or it might mention it on youtube.com

It's called "It's me Snitches" by Swizz Beats. I cant find the instrumental, just the song with words.

At first I thought she was one of those "artistic" dancers and she was just going to stand there with her back turned. Why didn't she turn around and say "That's not my song"?

My guess is that they're told to not start dancing until they hear their music. Either that, or she was afraid that if she did turn around and say "That's not my song," her music would kick in and she'd be a couple of beats behind.

Anyway, I'm thrilled that the season has begun. Second favorite show, just behind Top Chef. Easily the most entertaining and compassionate judges on TV (although I usually fast forward through Dan's comments).

The show's highlight? The bit at the end with the popper and Nigel. Their impromptu "slo mo" killed me.

It took a long time for Mia to sort of grow on me. Mia isn't fake, -Mia is just ...Mia. I don't always agree with her judging but she's always worn her heart on her sleeve.

I've read that Shane may not be back. MTV's "Dance Crew" show starts up with live shows in mid-June on Thursday nights and he was the lead judge.

I've also heard Wade Robson may be a no-show for one reason or another.

I hope that's not true. His routines are always the most inventive and entertaining, IMO.

Muraine was featured on Ellen's Memorial Day show. It boggles my mind how he can do all those crazy moves. It's insane. I agree that he would have stood a better chance of winning America's Got Talent, but he's getting mainstream exposure now and that's what counts.

The popper was very good though I agree that he won't make it past Vegas. The other one that really stood out for me was the blond girl who played soccer.

I completely missed Audition show #2.

Audition show #3 will be tonight (Wednesday) at 7pm, CDT.
Audition show #4 will be on Thursday, 7pm, CDT.

Both are two hour shows.

Mia isn't fake, but she is easily one of the most annoying people I have ever seen in my life. No other change to the show that I can think of could please me more than to have her never return.

About Shane and Wade possibly not returning, that is very disappointing news. I have always enjoyed both of them, and they are both very good choreographers.

5/28 Episode - Salt Lake City, UT / Dallas, TX (2 hrs)

Watched the first hour... meh.

I laughed at the dude in the "Joseph Smith is my Homeboy" shirt. Only in Utah.

I could barely stomach the first hour. But a couple girls (Chelsea and Lindsay) were really good.

The judges got cranky with a few dancers.

"What are you studying?"
"Criminal Justice."
"You've created a new crime against humanity."

"What do you do?"
"Financial adviser."
"Would you invest in yourself as a dancer?"
"I think so. Yes."
"You're a bad financial adviser."

I don't know how some bad dancers make it in front of the judges. Aren't the dancers supposed to dance in groups before even going to the judges?
