Criterion May Newsletter (Max Ophüls)

DVD Talk Gold Edition
I'm thinking this must be a reference to Max Ophul's 1953 film, The Earrings of Madame De. . . , about a woman who sells the earrings that her husband gave her, leading to assorted amorous intrigues. I wasn't aware that a box set was in the works, but cool.
I've never seen this film. Any opinions?

don't ask me, because... well... the movie really didn't impress me all that much.

Got my newsletter, too. Very eager for this...I've seen Madame de...; as impressive a film as any I've ever seen, but the DVD I owned had a horrible motion blurring. Of course, having not seen the other films, I'm more excited about them!

I assume this set will include Earrings, La Ronde and Le Plaisir, as they are the three Ophuls titles that Criterion owns the rights to, at least according to DVDAf.

It would be marvelous if they were able to get "Letter from an Unknown Woman" away from Paramount...
Paramount announced the DVD a few years ago, and then canceled it. And Criterion has already licensed a few titles from them.
