... mainly because that ad is bugging the hell out of me. It expands without me ever rolling over it, and several times it's still played even when I "close" the ad... and then it expands, and plays, again! It's not a random occurrence either, appearing on nearly every page I go to. How long is this advertising supposed to go on for, because it's doing the exact opposite of what it should be doing.

I guess that explains a few things. I've noticed the traffic on this site has gone waaa-aaaay down over the last several months. It used to be that if you didn't check in every couple of hours threads would drop to the second or third page without you ever seeing them, now they seem to stay for days untouched.
There just seems to be a lack of information and excitement. This has been my home page and favorite forum for 6 years but it may be time to look elsewhere

If you're not already using Firefox, go download and install it now.
Then add the following two extensions: AdBlock Plus and Flashblock.
It will make all of your websurfing a safer, smoother, faster, and altogether more enjoyable experience.

I never had that installed in FireFox until this mess, and it's helped out a lot. Not only with this add, but other sites as well.
I wish we had something here like other sites, where we pay a flat one-time fee of $10 or so and we got the site ad-free, with perhaps other benefits also.

I find it humorous that IB wants a "family friendly" site then choses to run this Frontier(S) ad. If either of my boys saw any part of that they'd be scared for the rest of the day. I'd much rather them see a boob or a bit of ass than this type of gore.
I hope they (IB) can understand that they don't get to have their cake and eat it too. Don't pretend to be a "family friendly" site then have ads for gorey movies.
Now as far as the ad goes, I do find it annoying, disturbing and a good reason not to return to this site until it's removed.

Here is an idea for those at work. Set the volume to mute:) I do that when using school library computer in case some ads with audio pop on.
I haven't had much trouble with this ad. But maybe that's because I'm being lazy and just hitting 'pg up' or 'pg down',or arrow buttons and not using cursor to scroll. Since only when my cursor scrolled across the ad,did it begin to play trailer with audio. But it always stopped and went away when I selected 'close'.
It is a bit annoying though with it literally being on every single forum and thread though!

Maybe i'm missing something, but why is everyone blaming Internet Brands? As far as i remember, there were plenty of annoying ads that have popped up the last few years. And plenty of times we had to wait a few days for Geoff to work through it. Or all of the ad placements in signatures or below posts or whatever.
I was also under the impression that a lot of ads were as a result of the ad company and doesn't exactly go through an approval process before they show up here.
I could be wrong and if that ad stays up for the next month because Internet Brands wants it there then I can see the complaints, but if they're looking at it and end up pulling it in the next day or so, it would be fine with me.

Intrusive ads are one thing, but when my laptop fans fire up loudly after visiting this particular website for less than a minute, then something is wrong. the time left on my battery's charge shouldn't be cut in half simply for coming here, should it?

Yes, G! was "more" responsive than a corporate owner could possibly hope to be but for those who spend a ton of time here, no one could ever have been quick enough (I recall a number of times when people fussed at G! for taking too long to fix/change something they wanted done). The problem with corporate ownership is that it seems likely that any major decision needs to go through multiple hands with varying degrees of responsibility. Expecting an immediate response to the ad (especially when initial reports came in on the weekend) is not reasonable and the number of "must be a long weekend at IB" type comments forgets that changes in a contractual advertisement probably have to go through additional steps. I also think that once someone at IB noticed the issue (presumably on Monday), that was when the clock started, not when the solution could immediately be made to pull the plug.
As far as the claims that the website is running slow, I haven't noticed it but the move to the new server seems to have sped up the website overall for me. I think that reporting discontent in this thread over the advertisement, if done by a sizable enough population, will have a greater impact if people tone down the rhetoric about violating the TOS, hating the new owners, and some of the crankier comments made but I'm well acquainted with large bureaucracies and corporations so your mileage may vary.

But we do hate the new owners, faceless whoever they ares. If they were a part of the community and actually talked to us (like G!$) used to do, maybe they could be cut some slack.
This notion people keep tossing around of "Just go with the flow, be calm, IB is nice, cut them some slack, don't be angry, just take what you're given" is goofy. Some of us don't like the way things in the forum are going. Compound that with the total lack of attention from the people who own the place and you get some angry diehards who love this place and are tired of seeing it get screwed with by the giant faceless maybe-people.

The only slow downs I've noticed are usually attributed to connecting to third party server (presumably for the ads). Regarding this ad I have to say I have yet to see the whole thing. As mentioned previously long ago I started running the mouse cursor down the side of the forum because of the center place/mouse over to expand type ads and I haven't really had any problems.

So what solution are you looking for? Keep in mind I have no "in roads" to IB and have no power to implement any changes, but I'm just curious.

Yes, and Geoff came here and personally kept us up to date on what he was doing about it. As others have said, it's the lack of response from IB that is generating most of the ill will here. The mods/admins have been great, but the owners need to step up.
While Geoff would usually respond to the threads, the few threads I found with a search all had the same ultimate response (sorry that people don't like it, but the campaign is going to run to completion anyway). If someone from IB came and made a post like that it seems like it would just make people even more upset than they already are.
"Stepping up" at this point would only serve to provide the mob with a focal point to vent against. There have already been several personnel changes with regard to people at IB associated with DT, with presumably more to come, and while I would like at least one of the people possessing some "juice" over DT to participate here in the forums, I think all such people are wearing many hats at IB (running so many websites and all). Spending a lot of time here getting beat up by those "angry diehards" isn't likely something they would relish doing while aggressively dealing with all the issues involved with running the place.
(and "goofy" or not, the majority of the DVD Talk experience is still the same, flaws and all, there just isn't a singular person to vent on as in the past)

Have you guys really noticed that big a change since IB came on the scene? I was expecting to, but I can't say that I have, honestly. And I see no reason to hate them.
This ad sucked, but I've dealt with horrible ads running through ad servers myself and it's a difficult issue to address. I understand and share people's frustrations over this ad, but honestly I don't hold it against them. I do hope they take the steps necessary to prevent this in the future as best they can, and based on the feedback they have received, my guess is that they will.

This ad has really grown on me since my last post. I want to see it in theaters now... Many many times. Maybe even as many times as I've seen the ad! Keep them coming!
Is there any way you can get the ads to over-ride our volume control? Because I accidentally left my computer muted and then i saw that the ad was playing and I missed the fantastic screaming sound, so I had to keep refreshing until I got the ad to come up again.
Maybe we should have them for louder movies.
Again, thanks!
P.S. Can you add a button to the ads that makes them our default home page and doesn't allow us to start browsing the internet until the ad has completed? Maybe even have a voice in the ad say something, and we have to type in what the voice said before we can proceed? That will make sure we heard it with the fantastic sound. Again, thanks!

I wonder if I turned the ads off in the forum if they would notice. I'm sure they would eventually, then :johnwoo:me, then :banned: (it sure would be funny though)
That's a joke in case anybody from IB reads this, but seriously, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to fix this stuff. If you don't fix stuff, you're going to piss off people. If you piss off people, they stop coming. If they stop coming, your investment turns to :crap: Simple.

i love to think that the people in charge of this think if they can override the fact that we are trying so hard NOT to see their stupid popup ads, that it will somehow get us to change our mind.
as if companies can forcefully shove advertising in our faces and that is effective? if anything its going to make me want to buy it less (and it has). im the type of person who will pay a little more if the salesman is nice rather than a pushy one - i have purposely not bought from people when i feel they are being pushy and annoying. and thats what this ad is doing. i will NOT buy this dvd ever.
and to think there are people trying to find ways to get us to view their ads when we are giving them clear signs that we dont want to see it (popup ads for example). trust me, we dont want to see it and when they do shit like that, they are just making it worse!
(i guess the only way this method works is when you are dwight trying to buy a car from andy...sorry just watched that episode last night :) )

Whoa! It seems to have disappeared just while I was reading this thread. When I got to page 10 it wasn't there... finally. Clicking around a little it seems to be gone from all pages. Talk about timing!
Sweet relief.
edit: OK, I take it back. I just went to read the review of "Backyardigans: High Flying Adventure" and it's playing at the bottom of that page. The freaking Backyardigans! Talk about knowing your audience...

Hi folks,
My name is Steve and I'm the advertising director for Frontier(s). I've worked on a lot of projects like this over the years, and frankly this is the first campaign that's gotten so much attention. As you can imagine, we're all tickled pink.
Thanks so much for all the feedback on the ad. And, if anybody has questions about the film, I'd be happy to answer them. I think it's great to see such an swell in interest in a European film.

you know, i was actually thinking along these lines last night, between this and all the recent NWS hubub that's been going on around here. i was asking myself if anyone at IB would actually notice (and want to do something about it) if a bunch of NWS stuff started showing up in the threads (and the mods didn't do anything about it). my guess: probably not. same with the ads.

This week we feature a film that isn't for the faint of heart: Frontier(s). After a group pulls off a daring heist, they hide out in a seemingly peaceful forum. But the mysterious forum owners are hiding a secret more terrifying than anything they could ever imagine. Trapped in an endless maze of internet banner ads crawling with pop-up trailers with loud screaming, they must fight to survive their bloody initiation into the new forum owner's evil advertising cult. Frontier(s) is the latest installment in the Horrible series of banner and pop-up ads released by Lions Gate Entertainment and is a "dripping piece of French imported crap that serves up the nausea for hardcore forum fans". Check out the trailer to this "memorable horror entry" that's filled with "style, energy and overall excess." No, really, check it out. You won't be able to avoid it anyway.
