Beck: Modern Guilt - July 8th, 2008 (Produced by Danger Mouse)

Tracklisting:

1. Orphans
2. Gamma Ray
3. Chemtrails
4. Modern Guilt
5. Youthless
6. Walls
7. Replica
8. Soul of A Man
9. Profanity Prayers
10. Volcano

from pitchfork:

Cat Power Appears on New Beck Album
Said album might be appearing sooner than you think

Following in the footsteps of Radiohead, Trent Reznor (twice!), the Raconteurs, Gnarls Barkley, and himself, Beck plans to release his new Danger Mouse-produced LP quite quickly-- in the next four to six weeks, to be exact, according to MTV.com

Universal Music Group wouldn't confirm anything, but we discovered that one of MTV's claims is very much true: the new Beck album will indeed feature contributions from Chan "Cat Power" Marshall. Hopefully in a more notable capacity than Beth Orton on Midnite Vultures, eh?

----------------------------

The Raconteurs. NIN. Radiohead. These quickie albums are great. I have high hopes for this one.

I haven't really liked anything he's done since Sea Change, so we'll see about this one. Another Midnight Vultures would be great.

Strong agreement although I'm sure we're in the minority.

Yeah, that would be all right also. Just stop trying to re-create Odelay.

The first half of Guero was all kinds of awesome.

Shame about that second half.

Actually, I though Guero was pretty solid straight thru. The Information is where he lost me.

It's funny I hated Midnite Vultures when it came out, but now I absolutely love it. I guess it's so dense that it just took a while for it to seep in to my consciousness.

The Information has its moments, but his Scientology is becoming more and more apparent in his songwriting.

Strange Apparition off of Information is one of the best Stones songs in years though.

I hope it's in surround, but I guess after The Information, he doesn't "have" to do it anymore. I was very spoiled up to that point (sans Guerolito). He seemed to mirror The Flaming Lips in that regard. I have really liked everything he has done, even Guerolito to some extent. If I listen to The Information, I usually watch the DVD as well. It just has a laid back concept vibe w/o an actual story that would go along with it. Speaking of Beck/Flaming Lips, I would recommend some of the "Morning Becomes Eclectic" sessions with Beck solo, as well as when they teamed up, from 2002, when they toured together.

I'm hoping that because of the Cat Power combination, this is going to be one of his quieter/acoustic/grittier albums, like One Foot in the Grave (still his best, IMHO), Mutations, Sea Change, etc.

My huge huge problem with Beck is that he changed how he sings. It started with Mutations and just got worse from that point on: his voice is now really high-pitched and whiny, like Spencer Krug from Wolf Parade. The thing is, that's Spencer's voice. Beck just seems to be doing this artificially. There are still songs where he doesn't do this ("Lost Cause" from Mutations).

He needs to do another Mutations/Sea Change style album. I don't know if Danger Mouse will be able to deliver that type of album.

Does anyone know if Beck's collaborations with Puff Daddy ever saw the light of day, even in bootleg form? I think they worked together on a few songs but nothing ever came of it.

More Beck Album Details Emerge

Beck's short, sharp shock of a new album coming out this summer (via XL & Interscope) has a few more details attached to it, thanks to a report from Rolling Stone's Rock Daily blog.

The report, confirmed by Beck's publicist, states that the record's tentative title is Modern Guilt and that it features the following songs: "Modern Guilt", "Beggars Shoes", "Chem Trails", and "Walls", the latter featuring featuring Cat Power.

The album also marks the end of Beck's record deal with Interscope. As for what's next, Beck told Rolling Stone, "I don't have any plans at the moment. It's anybody's guess where things are going week to week with the music business."

What's wrong with that? Must every album be 18 tracks and 80 minutes long? Radiohead said it best when commenting about keeping their albums under 45 minutes. Even if you're a huge fan of Radiohead, do you really want to listen to them for 80 minutes straight? Quality > Quanity

If all the tracks are good, the longer the better, but I would much rather have a short album that is solid all the way through than a long one that is half filler.

Exactly. Same reason I love the new R.E.M. Not a lot of fat.

Word, name a 78 minute album that's actually good the whole way through.

They are very few and far between.

Disintegration. I generally prefer more music for my money than less.

Interesting. I prefer a good album regardless of its length.

Some of the best albums are only thirty minutes long. And yes, "Lost Cause" is from Sea Change. Not sure what I was thinking.

So DM has worked on this album and the new Martina Topley Bird?
