"John Rechy, recipient of the Publishing Triangle’s William Whitehead Lifetime Achievement Award, wrote City of Night in 1963. This radical and daring work, which launched Rechy’s reputation as one of America’s most courageous novelists, remains the classic document of the garish neon-lit world of hustlers, drag queens, and men on the make who inhabited the homosexual underground of the early sixties."

Not sure what is up next. Got a ton of used books at a book sale, and have no idea where to start. Bought 30 books for $45, and they include 4 Elmore Leonards, 4 Dennis Lehanes, the three Bourne books by Ludlum, a couple of Stephen Hunters and Michael Crichtons, and some other individual books, like American Gods and Big Trouble. What to do, what to do...

That has been in my top picks for best of the HCC series books that i have read so far. Great book!

I'm reading a book called Possessed by Thomas Allen. It is supposed to be the true story of an exorcism.

I'm also perusing that book recommended in last months thread called Ghosts (something...) that is about CIA involvement in Afghanistan when funding the insurgents against Russia.

Just finished The Rose and the Briar, a collection of essays (and one cartoon and a collage) about American folk ballads. Interesting stuff.

Also been finishing up Will Durant's Story of Civilization, Vol. II (finally), and sneaking occasional peeks at a book of Gerard Manley Hopkins's poems and a great little book called Dueling in the Old South, which contains some hilarious anecdotes.

I really enjoyed this book, the ending is very moving. Upton is one powerful writer and one of the main reasons why my political views are drifting towards a form of socialism.

And if you have not read it I would HIGHLY recommend The Jungle.
