Reccomendations on Alaskan life, adventure, even (outdoor) survival?

Going to Alaska next month to live as a Park Ranger for awhile so Id like to get some books and do some reading, not only before I go, but while Im there in isolation. So if anyone has any reccomendations, Im all ears.

As far as survival, I wanted a book like from that movie 'The Edge' where it talks about how to live and surivive on your own (ie how to make fire from ice, build a bear trap, etc) or stuck in the wild. Turns out the damn book isnt real so anything close would be great.

I thought Wilderness Survival was pretty good. Instead of a boring step by step description of survival skills it is a naration describing the author's months in the wild with nothing but a knife. As he describes his experiences he then breaks into detail on how to accomplish the various skills. Maybe not as straight forward as other survival books (as in the skills aren't broken down into specific chapters, i.e. Shelter, food, fire, etc.) but a more entertaining read.

Hey thanks for the link. Looks like a good book. I think its better to have someone give accounts in a story mode instead of some survival manual where its like reading a text book.

I think I'll order it. It seems better than other I had looked up. Did you read this? What wilderness is he living in?

If I was at home I'd be able to tell you exactly, but I'm 90% it was New Jersey (believe it or not there is some real wilderness up there). I've taken it as entertainment on several hikes. I know it's not Alaskan survival specificly but one of the beter books regarding generic survival.

Speaking of Alaska, where are you going? I live in San Diego now but was born and raised in Alaska. I left when I turned 18.

Check out the Adrenaline series, including Ice.

Look them all through though.

I was in Alaska in 2004, and the guy who ran the b&b there had written a self published book on what it was like to live in Alaska (he'd been there for 30 years).

If you want, I can find the title (he gave me a signed copy).

Anchorage, so I was a city boy. My dad was big into hunting, fishing, and camping so we went all over. Good luck with the chicks (there is a reason I left, you know).
