Mariah Debuts At No. 1 After Monster First Week

Mariah Carey earns her sixth No. 1 on The Billboard 200 as her "E=MC2" bows on top. The Island Def Jam set moved 463,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan, making it the diva's biggest sales week ever. It's also the highest sales week of the year, surpassing the 375,000 start of Jack Johnson's "Sleep Through the Static" in February.

Especially the week she's the featured artist on said American Idol program.

I'm sure there are plenty of people that enjoy and look forward to her music, but I can't help but assume the majority of them are sheep.

Great. This guarantees at least one more album from her.

Yikes. Mountain Battles is at #98.

Let's face it. The vast majority of consumers just want generic, unchallenging entertainment that doesn't stray too far from their comfort zone. It's the way it always will be.

If people came into a Madonna thread and crapped all over it like this, there would be death threats by now.

So right!

I don't think another #1 album surprised anyone. There isn't much competition anyway. Watch, there will be a Madonna debuts at #1 thread in just a couple of weeks.

I would think that this thread would be for people's opinions on Mariah getting the #1 album, both positive and negative.

Here is what industry guru Bob Lefsetz has to say on his blog today about her string of #1 hits and the #1 debut on the album charts:

I challenge you to sing three of her songs. Hell, I challenge you to NAME three of her songs!

Let's see... There's "Vision Of Love", a teenager demonstrating melisma for all to see, unleashing upon us countless copycats with vocal training, but no ability to write meaningful music. Then there was "We Belong Together"... Histrionics on steroids, if that concept is even possible. Then... There was that video of her being a bad girl in the bathroom, directed by Brett Ratner. And the one of her on the roller coaster. Oh yeah, and the one of her shaking her mini-tits, before she got that porn star boob job, in the school hall. But what were those records again? And what were the verses of "Vision Of Love" and "We Belong Together"? In both cases I can only remember the single line from the chorus.

Hell, I'm no Elvis fan. But rather than tote up the reasons why he's no match for the Beatles, I'll tell you I can sing UMPTEEN of his hits. From "Hound Dog" to "Suspicious Minds". Maybe because they're classic songs, hits no matter who might have done them. Maybe because I was subjected to many on Top Forty radio again and again. To say that Mariah has eclipsed Elvis' string of number one hits is akin to saying that some quarterback playing Arena football has got a better passing record than Dan Marino... THAT'S RIGHT, THEY'RE DIFFERENT LEAGUES!

Elvis was competing against everybody, when the whole world was watching.

The whole world isn't even listening to music anymore. Hell, there are hundreds of cable channels and multiple video games with a greater visceral effect than ANY of Mariah's hits. Music counted because that's where the innovation was, that's where the flavor was. What exactly is Mariah Carey saying? I'm an uneducated twit who loves junk food who must be supported by the public because I demand so?

And we've got a mainstream media lapping this shit up. Hyping Mariah like someone cares. Well, SOMEONE does, but not many. She's a sideshow for those lost in the twentieth century.

Not only are many not paying attention to music, a great percentage of those who do ARE NOT LISTENING TO TOP FORTY RADIO!

That's the only place Mariah counts. It's like she's the star shotmaker on an NHL team. Interesting if you're into hockey, but most people DON'T GIVE A SHIT! Saying 500,000 people bought her record the first week out is like saying 1 in 600 people voted in an election... HUH? That's how few care about Mariah. In a country of 300 million, she doesn't mean DIDDLY SQUAT!

But that's the main asset a major label has today. Its media relationships. With favors traded for years, labels can count on a sycophantic media wined and dined into pledging fealty to run nincompoops like Mariah Carey up the flagpole. Come on, her album is a train-wreck. It's like having Quincy Jones, Trent Reznor and Tiny Tim make a record. It's like having the body of an Aston Martin powered by a four-banger with a manual transmission out of a Ford Focus. E=MC2 isn't a record, it's a PRODUCT, constructed by an industry that's lost touch with what the consumer desires. People don't want flash, they want SUBSTANCE! Something meaningful, that they can sink their teeth into.

Enough with the lowest common denominator tripe. Didn't we learn that a great percentage of the public is fed up in last week's debate? I mean if they're booing at a debate, what do you think they'd do if Mariah Carey took the stage? Laugh? Leave? No one who is not a fan gives a shit. And we're lucky, she's running for President of a club we're barely aware of, that we don't have to pay attention to.

Ooh... In an era when the Raconteurs and Elvis Costello release instant albums, sans endless hype, we've got a paint by numbers album massaged into nothing over YEARS marketed for months so that a big first week SoundScan number will be achieved. If this is the game you're playing, I hope no one is watching your expense reports, that you've got a blank check. Because you're wasting tons of money on one act who's only as good as her last record. Yup, Mariah is one stiff away from playing theatres, at best. Hell, she doesn't kill on the road, she doesn't play ten arena dates in one town, that's the classic rock acts. And, don't tell me it's apples and oranges, she's constantly comparing herself to Elvis and the Beatles, but the Eagles can do ten times her live business, and they didn't even have TEN number one singles, never mind the twenty Mariah's going to achieve to become BIGGER THAN THE BEATLES!

But when the Eagles reigned the first time, it was about the album, about FM, about the MUSIC! The trappings were close to insignificant. Band made record, then raped and pillaged on the road, little girls sacrificing their virginity to musicians who wrote songs that changed their lives. If you want one night with Mariah, based on the vapid shit she's released, then you must not be married, you must only visit prostitutes, because you're not CAPABLE OF HAVING A MEANINGFUL CONVERSATION, the underpinning of a great relationship!

Mariah is a cartoon. But she's no match for Veronica. And she's certainly no Betty.

But I don't read comic books anymore. Oh sure, there's a Comic-Con, but it's easy to ignore. Just like Mariah Carey and her music.
Fair or not fair?

Question: can anyone not purchasing the new album actually name and sing three of her songs? Me: 1) Fantasy, 2) All I Want for Christmas is You... uh, that's it.

I can't. I know there was a song with the lines "Honey" as the chorus or something. And she looked pretty hot in the video, but that's about all I remember.

There's the song where she sings about love and the song where she's a slut and the song where she's with the rappers.

Actually, the original poster of this thread, hotsexyboi, did just that. He made a rude comment about her age, and the way she dressed, so, I'm going to repay him the favor. In fact, I'll say exactly the same thing he said, but, apply it to Mooriah Carey.

Mariah Carey is too old to be dressing this slutty! What are you gonna do? LOL!!! Mariah Carey is so annoying!!!

eh, for bodom charting pretty good for a metal band that gets little to no major radio play and only has their video on headbangers ball and whatever fuse's metal show is.

I do like Mariah but it is a good and relevant article.

Stats are just that, stats. Mariah IMO hasn't done anything to really align herself in the Beatles/Elvis icon league. She's just churned out the same r&b/pop songs for 20 years, and her labels have pushed to get her at the top.

Granted, a lot of "haters" can say the same about Madonna, but think of the difference. People who hate Madonna actually hate her with passion, she incites something with them... Mariah is just another pop star who got lucky. Only her hardcore fans even think about her, she's never pushed buttons, she's never done anything except be the safe pop star.

In terms of being a pop culture icon, she's never done anything to be in the same vein as Madonna, Michael Jackson or god forbid even Britney Spears for the MTV era. She is the epitome of everything generic and safe and the reason she has the record now for solo #1's is because that's her lifes goal. Elvis and Beatles didn't work extra-hard to have #1 hits, it just came to them. Mariah and her labels have calculated having #1's so many times, and have infamously complained when schemes backfired and she got a #2 out of the deal (think Loverboy and Shake It Off). Remember when she checked into a hospital because Loverboy broke her string of having a #1 every consecutive year? I am sorry but something isn't right with the girl if she thinks hitting #1 is the only path to self-worth. She seriously needs a kid or something. Even if she tops The Beatles number of #1 hits in the US, she will never top their influence, impact and clout.

Mariah is pretty much a US phenomenon anyways. She's had success in Europe and Japan, but nothing like here. She is basically just viewed as our Jerry Lewis/David Hasselhoff.

Aren't Jerry Lewis and David Hasselhoff our Jerry Lewis and David Hasselhoff?

Now that you mention it, though, I can't sing or name a single Mariah Carey song. I can vaguely hum the chorus of her first hit, but that's it. By comparison, I own several of Madonna's albums, and I don't even consider myself a very big fan. Madonna made an impact on popular culture, whereas Mariah Carey just kind of shows up every once in a while.

Even though I started the thread about Mariah passing Elvis with number ones, it means nothing to me other than a passing interest. Outside of the song "Fantasy" I could not name or even hum another one of her tunes. That could also be said for most of the songs in the Top 40 right now. Thankfully, it's so easy to get lost in other great songs and bands w/out having to rely on charts or radio for guidance.

I remember many years ago VH1 did a special on the top songs of all time.
I recognized every song... until number one was announced. It was some song Mariah sang with Boyz II Men (is that how they spell it?) and I'd never heard it before. Not even a sliver of the song registered in my mind and I thought maybe I was going crazy or in a Twilight Zone episode.

Charts are irrelevant to me and have been for 25 years.

No, it's better off here. Since this a "news about the Billboard chart" thread, it's not threadcrapping to say Mariah Carey sucks. It's just like saying Teen Movie #273 is bad when it hits #1 in the box office thread.

"End of the Road" was an extremely big hit. I remember hearing it over and over and over on the radio. I think it spent 14 weeks at #1 which is pretty crazy. I like it more now since I'll hear it once in a while.

I can't sing an entire song but I know a big chunk of many of her big hits. But I'll take an '00 Mariah over a '00 Madonna. Madonna was losing me with "Ray of Light" and completely lost me with the craptaculor "American Life" where Madge raps about lattes. UGH!

I like the new album. It is fun. Plus what is wrong with listening to something fun after you get done listening to Thom Yorke of Radiohead whine for 45 minutes?

No, that's not the song I'm talking about. Just listened to a sample... goddammit do I HATE that song! Did some more research and it was "One Sweet Day" that spent 16 weeks at number one. I listened and still have never heard this song before that VH1 special. It scared the crap out of me how bad it is. WTF?
