I'm just curious because the stated reason was:

Since it's marked NSFW chances are it doesn't belong here. I didn't actually look at it since it seems the links are getting edited out since they are on our disallowed list (at least that's my assumption why they are coming up as www..com). That's strike two for the thread and in this case that means it's out of here/locked.

I understand the second reason, but the first seems dubious. NSFW stuff gets posted here all the time. More confused/curious than anything else.

The post linked to a site that wasn't allowed here so there was nothing displayed which essentially made it an empty post.

FWIW, that video has made national news. I actually saw it featured last night on Bill O'Reilly.

FWIW, the video has now been posted in the Random Video thread.

Is it fair to ask why the original site is banned from here? If memory serves is was just some random hip-hop site, but I'm not for certain.

Actually that was a decision I made on my own. When we had the Adult forum it was easy, since that's no longer an option to move threads too we're having to make things up as we go along. I'm trying to get a conversation going w/ the admin/mods (and hopefully the owner rep if they want to respond) about this topic right now so we can have some better/more defined rules about what is/isn't allowed. In the meantime though, I'm working under my current "marching orders" to try and keep things family friendly so I felt it best to close the thread before it got too out of hand (there had already been at least one RTP).

So dirty jokes are not ok but words like "faggot, fuck, cunt, pussy and dick" are "family friendly"?!? Are you kidding me?

edit to add: btw, I think the word "faggot" is a horrible word and I never use it. I hope using it here today to illustrate my point didn't offend anyone.

Obviously, I know why it was closed as stated by the mod. But, it seems extremely contradictory when we can already use any form of profanity here. People curse all the time in threads. Pictures of people penetrating each other with genitalia (blurred out) is acceptable in advertising here. It's obvious why that is a double standard, but that's for another thread. How is it that there is such a double standard on what is allowed and what isn't, when this place is far from family friendly and hasn't been for quite some time.

I think this is all fair criticism and all I can say is you should try it from this side of the issue. We have users who no longer have an outlet for content they want, as they can't/won't access xcritic, and people pushing the limit all the time. On the flip side we have RTPs and a somewhat stated policy of trying to keep the place somewhat respectable. That's why I'm hoping to get a conversation going w/ the "powers that be" so we can come up w/ more definitive guidelines. I'll let you know though w/ how these things have gone in the past this won't be a quick process.

We all appreciate your timely answers and input. Just trying to figure out how there become such a big double standard here with content. Obviously, it's mostly due to $$$$. But, in the past Geoff has always said the site has wasn't intended to be viewed at work b/c there might be objectionable content. Now, we all know Geoff isn't the big cheese anymore, and the site may want to change it's direction and focus. But it seems like it's been unannounced change that happened abruptly.

That I disagree w/. In the past we would just shuffle such threads to the adult forum, if they weren't started there in the first place. So the old standard for Other is what I'm still working under, w/ the exception of having to close threads since we can't move them anymore. Now regarding that standard and why certain words are allowed and others aren't that's a fair discussion to have, and IMHO it's mainly going to be up to the new owners to decide what they want. It's my understanding part of the agreement in the sale was splitting off the Adult Forum to it's own site. So I think the fact that has gone away is the main cause of the recent confusion since there's no outlet for that type of material anymore.

Perhaps we can revert to the old-old standard, from before there was an Adult Forum. There were cheesecake photo threads. People told ribald jokes. The Devil's Member smiley was introduced.

Yet in the Avatars thread, we have, "Everyone here is a grown-up, avatars are for kids!"

You can be completely pro-adult and for adult topics and discussion, and against porn. In fact, some would argue that porn is quite immature.

Honestly 8 years ago when I started posting on this board, I never imagined that I would be here still chugging along at this time. I guess I feel kinda sad because the place is changing, it no longer has a community feel anymore. The mods have done a great job over the years, but I wonder how long they will stick around because I don't think they are compensated, and honestly volunteering for an individual like Geoff is a lot different than volunteering for a corporation. Especially a corporation that subjects its viewers to the tasteless, annoying ads for that stupid French movie. I know it brings money in to support the "community" but I feel like the community is kinda going by the wayside.

Uhm, since this thread is about a video on national news, I'm not talking about porn. I could give a damn about porn.

I'm talking about someone who posts something SLIGHTLY off-kilter, tells a dirty joke or opens a thread about something which disgusts a select few and it gets locked by the fucking puritan police as being too 'adult-oriented' or NWS.

NWS is stupid, anyway. You're at work.

Fucking work.

I know I never cruise around on the internet on someone else's dime. If you do, you deserve to get fired.

But, anyway.

Why was "Las Vegas - Season 5 07/22/08" in DVD talk forum closed? Was it because only links were posted in the OP, or what? The thread didn't even get started before it was closed.

I don't understand why there is a limit as to how many threads you can have on the main page or why a thread is closed for lack of information. IMO getting the conversation going is the main thing. Everything else will just come in time. Now it seems like there is no conversation happening and no topics being created. The last post in a thread in that forum covers what 4 days? I remember when it was a lot more active.

I was going to ask the same thing about the Las Vegas thread. It said it was closed due to a lack of info, however it had a link to tvshowsondvd.com that had plenty of info. That's so stupid to close the freakin' thread because of that. Now someone has to make another one.

Why didn't the mod simply make a post in the thread saying that if the OP didn't add more info, THEN he'd close the thread. When you close it so abruptly, nobody has a chance to fix it.

A number of people have expressed their feelings about one rule or another, especially lately. I'd be curious to see a massive turnout in any poll though; even the most attended ones of late amount to a hill of beans in terms of how few members actually vote in them (and DVD Talk is not a democracy or democratic republic). I also think that "the powers that be" care what people think but unless you're backed up by huge numbers, they aren't likely to change a fundamental tenant of the rules (or interpretation of them).

Otherwise, perhaps if you asked one of the Administrators or Moderators, they'd clarify the rules about posting polls. I just don't think it would make a huge difference in changing policy no matter the outcome.

05-23-08, 01:04 PM
As has been said many times before, the forum is privately owned and is not a democracy. The rules that have recently been posted in Other were derived over a period of many years and refined after much discussion with the new owners of the site.

There has been substantial comment from people about the stated rules and the thread in Other is the appropriate place to discuss them. But they're not going to change in the near future.

slop101
05-23-08, 01:08 PM
I do remember the huge outcry over the ads inside the first post for each thread made Geoff get rid of them pretty quickly - but that was Goeff, and not "faceless corporation". I bet if they implemented ads like that, they wouldn't give a toss what we thought, that is, until they saw the inevitable dwindling of threads and posts - which will likely happen with these inane rules too, just not as quickly.

X
05-23-08, 01:12 PM

No, the thread they're talking about was just a pic of a mannish looking chick -- fully clothed (well, she's extremely big and the clothes are small and tight, but it's not adult.). Well, it was nasty, but you know what I mean. This would never have gone in the adult forum before.
