American Idol, Top 9, April 1/2 & Final 5 Pick'em Contest

The Final 9 will be singing tonight in a one hour show, 7pm CDT. Results show is still an hour long, 8pm CDT on Wednesday, April 2nd.

Dolly Parton will be the mentor tonight. Who do you think will be singing "9 to 5"? You know that *somebody* will do that song (my hunch is either Ramiele or KLC).

So… who do you think will be voted home after tonight’s performance? Personally I'm going with Ramiele for the third week in a row, I'm going to get that pick right pretty soon.

A couple more things: Mariah Carey will be the mentor on April 15th, the day that her new album is released, and there is a rumor that five former contestants will return on Idol Gives Back week and that one of them will be selected to go on the summer tour.

So you think you know how this year’s American Idol will play out? Enter the Pick the Final Five Finalists Contests

Simple, just pick the final five singers, in order.

Scoring:

a. For each of the five people you picked who are actually in the final five – two points each.

b. If your fifth place pick finishes in fifth place or higher, two points.

c. If your fourth place pick finishes in fourth place or higher, four points.

d. If your third place pick finishes in third place or higher, six points.

e. If your second place pick finishes in first or second place, eight points.

f. If your first place pick finishes in first place, ten points.

Prize? Bragging rights I guess. Deadline will be 7pm CDT April 8th (right before the singers begin next week. One entrant per person of course, and you can change your picks up to the deadline if you want.

My picks:
Spoiler:

1. David Cook (winner)
2. David Archuleta
3. Brooke White
4. Michael Johns
5. Carly Smithson

Posted by Heat-Here's an interesting rumor - during the fund raiser (Idols Gives Back?), five contestants will be brought back and one will be chosen to go on tour. That would be Amanda Overmyer, David Hernandez, and three others. The winner won't be back on the show, but will be on the summer tour.

Also, Josiah Lemming (?), the kid who lived in a car and sounded British, has been given a recording contract by Warner Bros.

I'm curious if the theme will be Dolly Parton songs or simply country music in general.

Good question, I hadn't thought that far ahead. What do you think? If lists are identical, the person who had it first has claim, or call it a tie?

And it may be better if people place their winners in spoilers, would prevent undue influence on later picks. Not a requirement by any means, but would be nice. If anybody wants to keep their picks private, send me a private message or email with your picks and I'll post them after the deadline has passed.

No way KLC is going home tonight. She has home field advantage because of the theme.

Why top 5 instead of top 8 (after tomorrow)? That would make the likelihood of a tie even lower, and let us be playing the game more right at the start?

Prize? Bragging rights I guess.
Booooooooo. Couldn't you spring for an AI-related CD? Imagine how fierce the competition would be with a Jordin Sparks or Blake Lewis CD on the line!

I'm curious if the theme will be Dolly Parton songs or simply country music in general.
My DVR guide says Dolly Parton songs. I wonder if they'll fudge it enough to allow them to cover songs that Dolly has covered on CD?

That would be CD #4 for Clay. How many does Rueban have?

Speaking of Season #2, I was watching an American Idol Re-Wind show a few days ago, it was the Final 6 from Season 2. Rueban does have a great voice but Clay was better in my opinion.

It was funny to see Carmen Rasmusen's face when Simon gave his comments - it was something along the lines of "you don't deserve to be on stage with the other five". She was voted off that week.

Of the two lists, TMZ's sounds much less like AFD, but they both seem unlikely.
Spoiler:
I can't believe Castro's really singing "I Will Always Love You", but Carly doing "Hear You Come Again" sounds pretty wacky too.

Real convincing with the April Fools joke, Ryan.

Brooke, could you seem any happier begging Jolene not to take your man? And a clapping mosh pit? Paula says she connected with the emotion of the song? WTF! At least Simon was paying attention. Very disappointing. I want to like Brooke, but no.

at how Idol's been bending over backwards the last 2 weeks to cover Cook's ass after the bad press. Kudos to him for finally mixing it up, though. A little vocally inconsistent, but it was a decent performance, and while his hair doesn't look great, it doesn't look nearly as ridiculously douchebaggy as before.

No amount of leg can disguise Ramiele's utter lack of confidence. She really needs to stick to ballads, because every time she does an upbeat song like this, it's dreadful. Plus she was overwhelmed by the background vocals.

Castro's voice makes women's tensions melt away? Did Jason and Ryan really not get the double-meaning there? The stoner's been pretty bad the last few weeks, but this type of folksy song is in his wheelhouse, and I think he did a nice job with it. It's forgettable, but he was confident with it they way he was when he did "Daydream".

When I read that Carly was doing this, it didn't add up, but the arrangement somewhat fit her. Unfortunately, her vocals broke all over the place, and she had to throw a power note and a run at the end yet again. The stylists are definitely getting more involved now. First, Cook's hair, and now Carly's makeup. It looks a lot less Barbie-doll stupid now. Simon's right about the wardrobe, though (even if it came across very cruel).

Dolly seems really impressed with AI's emotion chip. Free pizza party for the development team! He was a little off time with the band, and his trademark airy vocals are a little annoying, but he connected with the song better than anyone else so far.

After "God Bless the U.S.A.", it was pretty obvious what middle-America pandering song KLC would choose for Dolly night. Ha! She's barefoot too! I have a hard time connecting with covers of such autobiographical songs like this, so it didn't work for me. Simon's critique that it was pleasant but forgettable is spot on. It wasn't the disaster I predicted it to be, though.

I said that only an idiot would go after "I Will Always Love You". I was wrong. The mix of the two famous versions allowed her to capture the emotion of the original while still showing off her vocals without completely mimicking Whitney. It wasn't spectacular, but it wasn't the catastrophe I feared it would be, and I don't think the judges gave her enough credit for it.

Something Michael Johns is doing much better than David Cook is really connecting with the songs. Regardless of whether the performance is good or not, I always buy that he cares about it. He annoyed me a bit early in the season, but I'm starting to come around.

If Ramiele survives another week, we'll have proof that she's captured Jasmine Trias's voting bloc.

Michael Johns had the performance of the night for me. That was amazing...My tivo cut off...what did Simon have to say about it?

I guess David Cook addressed the arrangement factor. And he had his own arrangement, which I thought was really really good.

Sayesha didnt oversing that song and I really thought she did a great job, she just cant get any props from the judges.

I thought Brooke did really well, and I liked the violin player.

The rest can just go away.
