I haven't flown in almost 10 years, so I have no idea how to go about finding the best deal on a flight. I'm looking for a one way ticket in most likely August or September.. any suggestions on how I can get the best bang for my buck?

depends on where you are going. If Southwest is in your neck of the woods and goes to where you need to go, check them.

Try http://www.sidestep.com and search via one way only.

Install Soutwest Ding

Check www.kayak.com and www.expedia.com

Don't use cheaptickets.com. They'll say you're getting a flight for a specific time and date and then change it and refuse to fix the problem. Orbitz is also the same company as cheaptickets.

Use Southwesy as others have suggested. The Southwest "ding" has some great deals.

But can't you just use those sights as a reference then go directly to airline to book the flight for the same price? That eliminates any confusion potential from these "middle men".

Just about any flight you will get from cheaptickets will be for Airtran airlines. Ther must be owned by the same parent company.
