Sweeney's art has been confirmed. It's the CD art below plus the fancy Beowulf border.

On my way from Michigan to Massachusetts for a work trip, we cut through Canada, and of course I had to make my first ever stop at a Future Shop store. It was a little underwhelming, as things weren't very well organized and it reminded me of a poor Circuit City store. I guess I was expecting more, considering how cool the name is.

Picked up copies of "Bee Movie" and "Ocean's Thirteen" Steelbooks while I was there though. Very seriously thought about "Ratatouille" too as that's one of my major wants, but I already own the regular DVD, and couldn't justify $28.99 + crazy Canadian taxes on a double dip. I'm happy with my purchase, although a couple of the plastic tabs on the circle that holds the discs in on "Bee Movie" were broken off somehow. Oh well.

You could have claimed back the taxes at the border.

You could have claimed back the taxes at the border.

Really? How do you do that, I didn't know anything about that?

We have a minivan full of video camera equipment, and were nervous that they were going to try and switch us, so I was trying to be as non-confrontational as possible. We're heading back tomorrow, and going through Canada again... Any tips?

The tax rebate for non-residents has been eliminated as of April 1, 2007, unless it's for business purposes.

They lowered the tax rate for us from 7% to 5% so I guess they figured they could recoup some of that by not refunding it to tourists.

We once got ding big time from a trip from Washington state and I was dismayed they charged tax ontop of the taxes we already paid down there.. Something about they tax the entire amount it costed you to bring the item back into Canada.. If I got something shipped to my box down there, they suppose to include shipping when they calculate the taxes.. I did some research at the time (don't know if it's valid now) and apparently I could claim the WA state taxes if I resided in a province/state that didn't have provincial/state taxes (ie Alberta/Oregon)..

Onto steelbook news, db27 has posted (http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showpost.php?p=8590860&postcount=78) he got their copies of Sweeney Todd and they will have the cover with the close up on Johnny Deep's face..

For those who don't visit the Bargain Forums much, someone posted (http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showpost.php?p=8592873&postcount=32) pics of the steelbook from a TWEC store that broke the street date..

$24.99. I bit more than I wanted to pay.. The poster mention there'll be a MIR, so that'll knock it down a bit, maybe $5?

Here's a picture of my Steelbook collection so far. Soon to be added is "Sweeney Todd" and "Cloverfield" when they are released, and I have "X2: X-Men United" and "The Day After Tomorrow" on order.

I'm not a guy who is in search of all Steelbooks, like howwon, because that would drive me crazy and cost way too much. I'm only in search of ones for movies that I like, or at least don't hate and am interested in. Thankfully, I've gotten good deals, too. The most I paid for any of them was about $35 shipped for "X-Men: The Last Stand" and that's about the most I'd pay for any others.

My want list right now includes:

-"300"
-"Boondock Saints"
-"Cars"
-"Grindhouse: Death Proof" (Best Buy 3-Disc)
-"Grindhouse: Planet Terror" (Best Buy 3-Disc)
-"Jungle Book"
-"Platoon"
-"Ratatouille"
-"Spiderman 3"
-"V For Vendetta"

its crossed my mind more than once over the past couple of hours, but I think I'll be holding onto to it to complete my steelbook trilogy :)

Nice pics Kory.. I'm about the same.. I won't go out of my way to get a steelbook for a movie I have no interest in seeing.. But it might push me to get a movie I'm on the fence about.. I need to get my collection together and get some pics oneday..

Nice score junyab.. Was it sealed with the comic book? I can't remember how wide spread the problem was, but when I got mine, there was a large "S" shaped scratch to the back.. I think someone from steelbook(tm) said it was a replicator problem, but I'm not sure how many X-men 3 steelbook were affected..

Looks like the fad for X3 fades slowly now as the crown jewel of the steelbook collectibility world and just turn into a norma one.

As more & more members (Canadians?) shows up obtaining and showing up X3 steelbook of their own and letting all know that its not just ebay or amazon you can get one.

Is Narnia the new King in R1 Rarest Steelbook?

Is Narnia the new King in R1 Rarest Steelbook?

I think that The Chronicles of Narnia could be grouped in with the following:

Ice Age 2: The Meltdown
The Little Mermaid
V for Vendetta

The Chronicles of Narnia has come up for auction three times. The last time, it sold within minutes of its listing, for $129.99.

The Little Mermaid has come up for auction once, that I know of, and it sold in the $200+ range.

Ice Age 2: The Meltdown sold in the last auction for $104.19

V for Vendetta has come up for auction a few times. The last time it sold for $202.19

X-Men 3: The Last Stand recently sold for $250.01.

I think that X-Men 3 is still sought after, as xage last post shows that, of all of the people that have posted here, only seven people have posted confirmation of ownership. Other people on other Steelbook forums are also searching for the X-Men 3 Steelbook. V For Vendetta appears to be a close second.

junyab, you can try WD-40 to remove the price sticker. Use a soft clean cloth to gently rub off the sticker. Once the sticker is removed, you will still have to remove the WD-40 residue. Warm soap and water should work.

Do anyone of you here havent noticed the "weight"? mine is around 32 steelbooks only but its HEAVY!

unfortunately nope, no comic attached...but luckily no scratches where the "s" shaped glue was...

will remember that trick...this time the sticker came off easily and didn't leave any residue behind...I usually use Goo Gone which also works like a charm!

I've owned the Narnia and Ice Age 2 Steelies...times got tough a couple of months ago (meaning there were too many new releases coming out for me to afford) so I sold most of my rarer ones on Ebay...got $80 for Ice Age and $125 for Narnia

I'd still think X3 is the rarest as it was the 1st steelbook released in North America (I think)...and with the comic book problem and only 1-disc f up...I think a lot of the stock was taken off the shelf and destroyed (so a Future Shop employee told me)...it may not seem so rare here, but Id still bet it has the lowest #'s

Cars, Little Mermaid & Ice Age were most likely bought by nice mommies who don't visit the internet DVD forums very often :)

howwon

I'd still think X3 is the rarest as it was the 1st steelbook released in North America (I think)...

X-Men 3 was released on October 3, 2006.
The first R1 Steelbook was Appleseed and it was released on May 10, 2005.

I'm going to call BS here. This employee does not know what he is talking about. I challenge him to provide evidence of this.

Kory
03-29-08, 03:24 PM
PMed you, howwon.

Also, I forgot that there are a couple non-R1 Steelbooks I'm interested in.
-"12 Monkeys"
-"Smokin' Aces"
-"Batman Begins" (I heard there are two versions, one that's entirely English, one that's not... I'd prefer the English one)
-"Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer" (I've seen pictures of this one on eBay... it's the black cover with the Silver Surfer on it that was on our standard 2-disc release)
-"Transformers" 2-sided edition

Johnsun: That's so weird to read that, I thought the guy I bought mine from was just an idiot, but I have that same "S" problem. It's not terrible and at the right angle, you can't even see it, but it's there. I'm now wondering if there's some way to maybe buff that out or fill it in. Any ideas?

junyab's post got me thinking about the early Future Shop exclusive Steelbook releases. Below is a list of the first ten exclusive releases from Future Shop and their release date.

1. The Chronicles of Narnia - April 4, 2006
2. Underworld: Evolution - June 6, 2006
3. V for Vendetta - August 1, 2006
4. Canada Russia 72' - October 3, 2006
5. The Little Mermaid - October 3, 2006
6. X-Men 3: The Last Stand - October 3, 2006
7. Cars - November 7, 2006
8. The Da Vinci Code - November 14, 2006
9. Superman Returns - November 28, 2006
10. Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest - December 5, 2006

Canada Russia 72' and Superman Returns are still available from Future Shop.

i can categorically attest that "X-Men: The Last Stand" is the rarest and least produced case in the "SteelBook"(tm) lineup. As I mentioned, I know some people, know some people and this is the rarest of them all. what the market dictates as price i have no idea how it works or really care to, but just to let you all know.

Also i acquired some new steelbooks recently. Just yesterday i was at futureshop and i stumbled onto the Jungle Book steelbook! it was near the cash and just all alone and lonely. I just had to buy it! Anyone know how rare it is?

I also got me Ong Bak and Hannibal steelbooks. they were in the two for 20$ section at futureshop! I had Ong Bak before but my ex kept it after our break up and since it was only 10$ i'd figure i'd re-buy it heh. And as for Hannibal i remember not being TOO crazy about the movie but 10$ for a steelbook? Why not!

And i also got the I Am Legend, Bee Movie,Beowulf steelbooks.

scott1598, I think some more people are having a problem posting here. I received an E-mail alert that there is a new post here but I do not see it. It was posted by Living Deadpan.

His post from the E-mail:

The movie in question is missing from your list.
i'll add it, but where in that link does it say it is a "SteelBook"? it just says 'special packaging'.

Only one missing from these pics is Boondock Saints which I was able to pick up yesterday.

I was lucky to stumble onto the novelty of Steelbooks when they were first being released in Canada (hence the copies of Narnia, X3, Underworld and POTC2). I would never have thought that they would be so valued years later.

Question: Why is the X3 steelbook so rare ? ... I remember that when I went to Futureshop on release week, there were many copies. even 3-4 weeks later, there will still many shelves stacked with them at various stores.

I think it was due to the fact that they were trying to charge 29.99 for a one-disc movie whereas the regular edition was almost $10 cheaper (for the same disc). If I wasn't a collector, I would have most likely skipped the steelbook.

I picked up my copy and a copy for a couple other people today that I had reserved, so three total. They only had one on the shelf, and a handful behind the counter. I assume they must have had more somewhere, but maybe not.

The back of the case and the inside are both really cool. They make up for the mediocre front cover. The discs are gray though... :(

I reserved mine on a whim since I was able to pick up the Transformers and Beowulf steelbooks without a reserve (granted I got the very last Transformers steelbook that day and it was only about 12:15pm).

When I got to FYE to pick up my reserved Sweeney Todd, they had nothing left on the shelves. The lady who helped me said they flew out of the store faster than any of the others that she could recall.

So... this one may be tough to come across...

Definitly would go over $100 bucks if you started the bid at $0.99 cents. It is rare and there would be collectors seeking it out to complete their DVD collections. Think of your most outrageous fixed price that you feel you have a serious shot at collecting on it and go for it. That way you only have to pay listing fees and get to keep it if nobody is crazy enough to use buy it now. For something that rare I would try it out. Try $299 for it at a fixed price, nothing to lose if nobody wants it at that price.

if youre willing to lose a few bucks on a fixed price listing on greedbay, why not attach a "best offer" option. that way, you can give yourself a feel for the market now.

You could try EBay, but I've just seen 300 go for under $50, and it was commanding much higher prices just a few weeks ago. There is still a big demand for this one since ALOT of US Collectors want this one to complete the Steelbook Trilogy (myself included). I'm working on scoring another region of this one that actually has two discs. It'll probably be my first non-R1 dvd, but it'll be a steelbook, and it'll complete the trilogy for me.

You could also offer it up for trade here on the forums, and ask for best offer in steelbooks. I would be willing to bet you would get offers of around 6-12 steelbooks for just this one alone. That way, you may loose a "supposedly" rare steelbook now, but you would grow your steelbook collection instantly, and then you could enjoy the quest to get it all over again. The fun is in the hunt for me.

So I went to Suncoast today to reserve Cloverfield and, though I had no expectations, I asked if they had any more Sweeney Todd steelbooks left. The clerk said, "No, sorry, we only have the regular two-disc edition left." I was disappointed. But then he went behind the counter to get something for another customer and said, "Actually we have one left." Happy day. I'm guessing that someone had reserved a copy and then said that they didn't want it anymore and then the sales team forgot to put it back out. So if anyone missed out I'd recommend going and asking.

For those who have never pre-ordered a DVD before, is the $5 you put down included in the eventual DVD price or is it an extra $5 that you have to pay for piece of mind?

Also, with the $5 mail-in rebate, do they send you cash or is it store credit or what? Also, the "Original bar code symbol from the package," is that the "Proof of Purchase" from the back of the DVD? If so, do you send one or both of them?

 No There is Nothing Wrong with the Steelbook (X3)

The links I shared where from Memory Lane... It gives some answers on what had happened before with the X3 Steelbook (on its release dates)... and many members here owns it

Actually X3's release in North America was a Major MESS which involves:

1. The Target Exclusive Edition
2. The Special Edition (21 Deleted Scenes vs 10 Deleted Scenes)
3. The Futureshop Steelbook (Which only came in disc despite 2disc slot on its steelbook and I have no clue if it were 21 or 10 deleted scenes)

With Junyab's post referring to X3 which were burned (coming from a Futureshop employee).. thats one possible theory

To be honest Im also inconclusive of X3 in futureshop, but I still stand that there were many scattered in Canada and many many members own it here have a photo proof that they do.

Heck, even the sales people at Scanovo (CANADA) got no clue about. All they thought were its discontinued and its rare ( but they cannot give any reason.. though they give me special promo stuff! but deymm cant post it due to some ********** reasons... ). One thing, I learned from the Scanovo guys... they are thankful in this thread (especially to you Scott! Kudos to you dude)

Oh speaking of sources... as far as sources are concerns... The xage, got a lot! :D :D :D , Hindolio is one of them (dont underestimate that dude.. he got a lot of very very interesting and ahead of sched/streetdate tips given to me)

On my end, I still stand that in North America the rarest steelbook is the APPLESEED GIFTSET (and please, enough with the excuse that there is a non-giftset steelbook, yeah I know.. but Im pertaining to the giftset).

http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showpost.php?p=8341371&postcount=476

My 3 Main Reasons!

1. It is the first Steelbook released in R1

2. The Giftset itself is Limited and #d out of 8000 (and the only #d Steelbook set in North America)

3. GENEON (The distributor) is DEAD!

Oh... the catch also on this set... it is EXTREMELY RARE one will get a "Perfect, Secured, Non Dented" Set!

I'm just reposting these because I need answers, especially for the mail-in rebate question. Do you have to send in the "Proof of Purchase" with the bar code or what?

Also, I read on another forum that there was going to be a There Will Be Blood steelbook at Best Buy this Tuesday, but I haven't heard any confirmation. Is it true or is the guy just mistaken?

Kory
04-06-08, 07:55 PM
It's the Proof of Purchase, including the UPC. If you don't want to cut anything, the price sticker on the plastic wrap that includes the UPC on it is a valid substitute.

Also, the $5 you put down goes towards the eventual purchase price.

And I am pretty sure the guy is just mistaken about "There Will Be Blood."

Another US collector is dumping his Steelbook collection on eBay, including six (6) hard to find Steelbooks.

This is interesting, as I have been following his buying habits and he spent a fortune on his collection.

This is the same collector that paid:

Chronicles of Narnia - $129.99
V for Vendetta - $202.19
X-Men 3 - $250.01

Howwon (don't know if you want your real name posted), I just wanted to let you know that I received my package the other day and it was in excellent condition. Thank you so much for everything.

I saved the bubble wrap and the box you send it in, and will likely send your package (once the second item is released) using the same materials, or at least the same bubble wrap, as it's very good quality.

My R1 Steelbook collection is now at 26! :) (http://www.dvdspot.com/list.php?member=YROK&filter=1764058618)

junyab's post got me thinking about the early Future Shop exclusive Steelbook releases. Below is a list of the first ten exclusive releases from Future Shop and their release date.

1. The Chronicles of Narnia - April 4, 2006
2. Underworld: Evolution - June 6, 2006

Just noticed this list from earlier in the thread. Seems so long ago that I got my first steelbook (Narnia), but it's only been 2 years. I remember back then they used to hand them out to you as bought the DVD and seeing people that didn't want the extra case. If only they knew what those would be worth now

I guess that's part of the reason those ones are so rare. The steelbooks were a new thing and not everyone asked for it even if they were entitled. I sure did though, still the best DVD packaging ever IMO.

I just got wind of another collector is going to unload his entire Steelbook collection on eBay. The collector is from Canada. He appears to be having a cash flow problem as well.

This is what he might be listing:

Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer
Death Proof
Pirates of the Carribean At worlds end
The Departed
Mission impossible 3
Bee Movie
Spiderman 3
Ratatouille
300
The boondock saints
Live free or die hard
Cast away
Hannibal
X2
Man on fire
oceans 13
Superman Returns
Transformers Protect
Bourne ultimatum
Die hard

I wonder if Fox didnt find their first batch of stellbooks released on 06/15/07 a sucess. The reason I say this is bcause they should be releasing a second batch. They do have many two disc SE editions that deserve the steelook treatment, Including their Alien, Predator, Alien Vs Predator, Speed films, also they should do the French Connection, I,Robot and Independence Day & from the MGM vault they should do the 007 films and Rocky!

I also think there's some steelbook fever going around. This was posted by someone on another site about steelbooks:

And fuck all Canadians, you get twice as many Steelbook exclusives as us Americans when the movies are produced by and made by us. We should have more exclusives instead of the other way around. It galls me and drives me crazy to see all these Futureshop exclusives when I would kill for those steelbooks. steelbooks are starting to make me hate Canadians.

Kory
04-23-08, 12:21 AM
The hinge is partially "feel-able" meaning that it is indented and raised just like the rest of the case, but it's not a real hinge, just part of the case design. The spine looks just like any other SteelBook spine does. Packaging is incredible though.

Can anyone tell me the difference between the Future Shop and the Best Buy exclusive copy of The Departed?

Pretty sure there is no difference. Best Buy's had post cards with it, and everything was written in English. Those are the only two differences I can think of there possibly being.

There is no difference. The Futureshop edition has no French writing and includes the post cards, at least mine did.

DaVinci Code & Chronicles of Narnia steelbooks are both 2 disc

They were handed out as extras when you bought the regular case at Futureshop.

These are the editions they were given away with:

no, they just scanned the regular case and handed you the steelbook at the checkout

Edit: I just noticed that you have your steelbooks listed on DVDspot. I don't think that the Narnia and DaVinci code steelbooks are listed there, you might have to make a new entry.

And all of those scratches, as well as the border on the front cover (except for the "latch") are indented. "U.S. GOVERNMENT" on the back is indented as well. Adn the movie title extrudes from the case. A lot of detail put into this. SteelBook has very cool possibilities.

Thx, Paddy, so the "damage" is just an "illusion" and not actually damaged? I was hoping the steelbook itself would be damaged.

ya, it's not really "damaged". More like a pattern of dents & scratches stamped into the metal. Still a very nice case, one of the better steelbooks released lately

I agree.

It looks even better in person than it does in the pictures.

This has probably been asked before but, are the Die Hard steelbooks available at Futureshop the 2 disc versions?

I know the ones from Best Buy in the US are, but they don't say on them whether or not they are the 2 disc version at Futurshop.

Just saw your thread in the DVD Exchange Forum, and wanted to post here and see if you had any spots left open, howwon. I only buy one copy of a steelbook when I want it, but if there are spots left in the group I can buy multiple copies if needed. Let me know.

If anyone knows, would you kindly do a comparison break down of the Indy steelbook and the current Indy set? If it has enough extra material to make it worth a double-dip, I'd be interested in a copy too. TIA!

Is the Indiana Jones a Canada FS exclusive or will it be coming to US stores as well?

I've been told by someone very credible that there are no plans for a U.S. release as of this moment.

Really not fair considering that it's being released in Canada, Europe and Australia. And this is an American-made film after all!
