Upgrading to front projector and screen!

30 years ago I got my first projector (GAF 2000S sound Super 8 film) and the only screen I had was a sheet taped to a wall!

Today I ordered the Sony VPL-VW60 front projector which will be displayed on a Screen Innovations 92 inch diagonal screen in my dedicated media room! The install will happen next Saturday and I look forward to finally watching my DVDs, Blu-rays, DirecTV HD, and PS3 games on them!

I upgraded the sound a while ago, going with a Sony STR-DA5300ES receiver and 7.0 (still need a sub) sound using Paradigm Monitor series speakers. I will eventually get the Ultracube sub and round everything out.

It took 30 years, but I will finally have the theater experience I've been waiting for! I'll post pics when I can!

Thanks, but nope - I'm hiring a local company to do it for me. I just don't do the DIY stuff well! The good thing is that the room was already built to accommodate the install - it has a power pack in the ceiling and a wire conduit that runs from the ceiling to the back wall where the receiver is. All they have to do is install the mount for the projector, mount the projector, and mount the fixed screen after they assemble it. I'm so antsy right now!

Just a thought. Same price range, same size range, a bit better at the low end:

Thanks, but I get a great deal on the Paradigms because I've done a lot of business with the local store I buy from. That and I want to keep all of my speakers in the same "family."

Of course! One challenge I had today was that I thought the cable conduit the builders put into my room was kinked somewhere because I couldn't pass a tape measure through it. Found out that the plastic tubing they used has ribs, so the tape measure was getting caught on a rib from time to time. I went to Home Depot, bought 30 feet of wire for 28 cents a foot, made a foil ball on one end and used painters tape to secure it. Went through smooth as silk and now when I get my forty foot HDMI cable, I can attach it to the wire and pull it back through to the projector's location!!

BTW, I edited my signature so there's a link to the theater shots.

Man I'm beat! I had to pull a 40 foot HDMI cable through a conduit that was barely wide enough for it!

You know what the receiver said to the HDMI cable on the other side of the wall?

Spoiler:
Come on! You conduit!

You've been reading the same bad joke book a co-worker of mine has! That cable was really thick (3/4 inch from Blue Jeans) but it's in there! Just waiting until Saturday to get the projector and screen installed!

I'd really suggest not putting your equipment under your screen. The lights on the displays are far too distracting in a projector setup. You want that screen wall to be as dark as possible, with no lights near the image...especially not colored lights. I'd even switch out those white outlets and switches with black or gray ones.

You could, I suppose, create some kind of dark fabric "curtain" to go over the equipment rack. Signal will still pass through, but the lights won't be too noticeable.

I'll take that into consideration, but the stand is so low that when I open my recliners, the footrest completely obscures the equipment. In that room right now I have no choice for equipment placement but up front, unless I bought a new equipment stand. Also, the walls are a very dark gray, the ceiling is black, the lights are dimmed down to nothing, although the stand itself is smoked glass and chrome.

They will glow and annoy you, I imagine. Be prepared to put electrical tape over the lights. Or use dimmer settings if available.

For the majority of the items mentioned, they have dim and even off settings for their displays. Again, thanks for the heads-up.

The Eagle has landed! My wife just called and told me the projector was delivered a few minutes ago! Now I just have to wait until Saturday to have it mounted and set up!

Planet Earth was for TV. Was it mastered at 1080p/24?

There's a thread on here somewhere with an email from BBC saying that there's a typo on the Planet Earth HD sets--they're actually 1080i. This shouldn't matter much, though, as most TVs either display this resolution or deinterlace it to 1080p.

Unless the two reviews I just read are wrong (hidefdigest and dvd talk), they're stating that the transfer is VC-1/1080p. I'll check it tomorrow and see!

UPDATE: The disc IS 1080p/24! While it was playing I brought up the projector's menu and it showed that as the current video status.

So, my projector's installed, but I'm not happy. The screen image tends to bend slightly down on the bottom right, so it just barely runs over the border. It may be that the geometry is off, but I was really not expecting this out of the box. There doesn't appear to be any type of setting on the VW60 to correct this. Any insights would be very useful.
