Dark Shadows on vhs & dvd
In Bill Gibron's review of Dark Shadows: The Beginning Collection 3, he states:
I'm not sure what Bill's talking about here. The VHS release of Dark Shadows followed pretty much the same pattern as the dvd releases - start with the Barnabas episodes, go to the end, then go back to the very beginning of the show and keep going until Barnabas shows up.** Anyone who collected the VHS releases can confirm that.
**How the dvd run will differ from the VHS pattern leads to what was the really controversial aspect of DS releases - and it was an issue with the videotapes, not the dvds. Back when DS first came out on tape, MPI had initially decided to edit the episodes, thus removing a lot of the non-Barnabas storylines as well as some of the show's notorious on-air mistakes. However, fans wanted the episodes complete and as they originally aired, so MPI eventually fixed this by letting the VHS run continue on until the show's end, then back to the non-Barnabas beginning, and then keep going on until the start of their release of non-edited episodes. (Thus, the introduction of the Barnabas period is actually covered twice within the VHS releases; the first time edited, the second time unedited).
For years, fans have been up in arms over the decision regarding the DVD release of this classic cult phenomenon. While VHS followed the narrative from Day 1, Curtis announced that MPI's digital version would begin with the arrival of Barnabas Collins and move forward, avoiding the original 210 episodes prior until 'sometime in the future'. Many a tooth was gnashed over that decision.
